SUBTITLE: The Symptoms, Causes, and Cures of Depression

Whether depression is felt mildly or acutely, temporarily or persistently, it strikes nearly everyone.

Drs. Minirth and Meier believe, however, that the emotional pain of depression can be overcome or altogether avoided. Drawing from their professional training, counseling experience, and biblical knowledge, they provide expert answers to questions such as:

* What are the symptoms of depression?
* What are the primary sources of emotional pain?
* Which personality dynamics lead to depression?
* How should a person deal with anger and anxiety?
* What medical treatments are available for depression?

Happiness Is a Choice explores the complex relationship between spiritual life and psychological health and then spells out basic steps for recovering from depression and maintaining a happy, fulfilling life.

Super plus, plus!  Mar 22, 2007
I suffered with chronic bipolar depression for about 20 years until a friend gave me this book to read. It helped me to take things slow, really search deep for the root cause of my depression and helped me to actually work through it and out of it. The book is very simple and an easy read. It doesn't negate your feelings. It doesn't tell you how to feel, but it does help you realize that it's ok to feel good about you and it gives you workbook type activities to help you get to that point. I recommend this book to everybody I know and the people who really sit down and absorb and apply the information have found it to work wonders for them too. It certainly beats paying a psychiatrist $200/hr just to tell you things you already know. This book gives you the motivation to take action on those things.
An amazing book that inspires...  Jan 31, 2007
I learned about this book in counseling and my counselor copied a chapter of the book; I believe it was chapter 3. Of course she like's to copy a lot of things for me to read and I don't always get around to reading them. But I took it home that night, sat down, turned off the tv and began reading. I could not put it down except to grab my highlighter and mark all of the things that I had no idea anyone could ever know about what I was going through. That one little chapter started a new chapter in my life. I couldn't wait to go back the next week and have her copy more for me. And then I decided that this book needs to be in my hands and in reach at all times. I have never read something so inspiring and soul touching. I called all my friends and mentors to tell them how fantastic this book is; I was literally shouting from the rooftops!! I was recently diagnosed as bipolar and I was terrified to start taking medication. I had people who have known me for a long time telling me that there is no way I am bipolar and others saying to take the meds. The next day is when I had the pleasure of finding this book, and that was my answer; I didn't need to listen to everyone to make my decision I just needed to open my ears to God and begin to truly understand that depression has many faces but it can be cured. I thank these two men for there knowledge of depression and above all for putting God first in this book. I can't wait to finish it!!!!!
This book changed my life....  Jan 22, 2007
I read this book clear back in 1987 when I was in my 20's. I was in a bad relationship and realized, through this book that I ....ME had control of my life. I had choices that could make me happy or not. I made the choice to be happy. I ended that relationship and got counseling. People, when they hear my life story of abuse, rape and several deaths in my family, never believe that those horrible things happened to me. I come across to people "so happy". I made the choice to not let them pull me down. God put us all on this earth to help others and that is what I have been trying to do all these years. My attitude is a direct result of this book and the choices it helped me make. I have recommended this book to others and believe it has helped them too. It has been a life changing experience to read it. Thank you for writing it.
Well presented...  Jan 10, 2007
There were a lot of specific suggestions for accomplishing the goal. I look for that in a book.
smart  May 18, 2006
in any situation, it is always my first instinct to play the victim. for example, if someone is making fun of me, I prefer to do nothing about it and just let him insult me. this is easier than standing up for myself, which for me is counter-intuitive and very challenging. even though i can rationalize my human nature, i cannot change it. for psychologists, this is good indication that i am depressed. my mind's ability to reason has led me to this harsh truth.

intelligent people know that playing the victim is a clever way to avoid life's challenges. However, intelligent people also understand that this has nothing to do with religion. i am no christian.
