Item Description...
Discusses the oppression of women in the developing world, sharing example stories about victims and survivors who are working to raise awareness, counter abuse, and campaign for women's rights.

Publishers Description
#1 National Bestseller
From two of our most fiercely moral voices, a passionate call to arms against our era's most pervasive human rights violation: the oppression of women and girls in the developing world.
With Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn as our guides, we undertake an odyssey through Africa and Asia to meet the extraordinary women struggling there, among them a Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery and an Ethiopian woman who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. Drawing on the breadth of their combined reporting experience, Kristof and WuDunn depict our world with anger, sadness, clarity, and, ultimately, hope.
They show how a little help can transform the lives of women and girls abroad. That Cambodian girl eventually escaped from her brothel and, with assistance from an aid group, built a thriving retail business that supports her family. The Ethiopian woman had her injuries repaired and in time became a surgeon. A Zimbabwean mother of five, counseled to return to school, earned her doctorate and became an expert on AIDS.
Through these stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women's potential. They make clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and how we can each do our part. Throughout much of the world, the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population. Countries such as China have prospered precisely because they emancipated women and brought them into the formal economy. Unleashing that process globally is not only the right thing to do; it's also the best strategy for fighting poverty.
Deeply felt, pragmatic, and inspirational, "Half the Sky" is essential reading for every global citizen.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
heartbreaking truth  Dec 20, 2009
This is a fantastic easy to read book, full of the heartbreaking truth that is hidden from the western world, heart wrenching yet inspiring at the same time, a must read for everyone and anyone it will open your eyes and your heart.
Worth my time to read  Dec 18, 2009
I thank you for all women who spoke up about their stories. It is a great book. Definitely worth my time to read it all.
Fantastic  Dec 12, 2009
This is an amazing book, one that opens one's eyes to the reality that women -- especially poor women -- face in many parts of the world. The good news is that things are slowly changing for the better as economies grow and develop and leaders become more aware -- the bad news is that there is still so far to go. This book is a life-changer -- read it!!
Excellent Way to Care and Act about the World  Dec 10, 2009
This is an excellent book by Sheryl Wudunn and Nicholas Kristoff that immediately shows you how important women are the the well-being of the world. Both authors tell stories of individual women who change their lives and others they touch by overcoming a life-threatening obstacle - be it rape, poverty, shame, etc. It shows how one person can make a difference and how each of us can do something to make the world better. Women, through education, can change the world.
Give This To Your College Student for Christmas!  Dec 10, 2009
Christmas is a chance to tuck a gift under the tree that can be life changing. We don't call that manipulation, we call it taking advantage of your opportunities. If you don't want to use Christmas to make your power play, there are other ways to put this book in your child's hands. You could leave it on top of their bed as a welcome home gift, or set it on the kitchen table. You might even tell them no more tuition money until they read this book. But whatever it takes, make sure your child doesn't return to school until they've read it! In fact, start by reading it yourself. After you've read it we guarantee you will make sure everyone in your family reads it.

The way to change the world is to fight oppression of women and girls in the developing world. Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn make a compelling case for this straightforward premise through the stories of women and girls whose lives have been dramatically changed for the better through relatively small interventions. This is not a `women's' book, but a book for all of us. When women and girls experience a rise in the standard of living, it touches the entire family, men and boys included.

Books like "Half the Sky" help our children (and us) think about the bigger picture, about our role in the world, and ways we can make a difference. Perhaps this will be the year your family decides to donate money to Mercy Corp or The Fistula Foundation, or even travel to another country to volunteer with a non-profit. The appendix at the back of this book will help to get you started.
