Item Description...
Welcome to Gun Lake, Michigan, a quiet, unsuspecting resort town---until the Stagworth Five, a band of criminals on the lam, arrives in town. Five local residents are caught in the crosshairs of fate: a desperate woman, a man of faith, a guilt-ridden father, a frantic mother, and a disheartened deputy. One thing's certain . . . all their lives will be changed forever.

Publishers Description
Once again Travis Thrasher takes readers on a thrilling ride, this time through the story of five escaped convicts and the people whose paths they cross. Weaving together twists of fate and fast-paced action, Gun Lake examines the consequences of sin and asks some compelling questions: Where do you turn when there is no hope left? How do you leave past mistakes behind? An edgy story with a redemptive message. Kurt Wilson could feel his heart beating. He took in slow breaths, but the blood still raced through his body. Adrenaline pumped and all he could do was sit there, behind the wheel of the Ford Explorer, looking out the open window toward the Harmans sporting goods store and waiting for word. Underneath his legs, next to his boots, rested a brand new .45 handgun that had never been fired. Hopefully after tonight, it would remain that way.

Thrasher's best to date  Sep 8, 2004
Gun Lake is (as I'm writing this) the newest novel by Travis Thrasher. I'd read all the others and was eager to get this one, as it represented a change of style for the writer. His previous works have been romantic stories about redemption, and while those traditional elements are present here, this novel is more suspenseful.

Gun Lake ambitiously weaves multiple story lines that are initially unrelated, but (of course) begin to crash in on each other as the story progresses. The "main" story is that of a group of 5 escaped convicts on the run from the law. The central question in this story line is whether these men will escape, or gain anything like a normal life back (maybe even redemption?) Thrasher does a good job of making you both despise and empathize with the cons, important to the suspense of the novel.

While I won't give away the plot, the stories have many parallels, and so comment on and enrich each other. The struggles of a parent to control her rebellious teen intermingle with a broken man's struggle with the bottle, and so on. My only gripe would be that at times these transitions are unclear. I had the benefit of reading this book in one sitting, which made it easier to keep characters straight, but I could see the many names and stories getting confusing, and there's not always a clear distinction between a new paragraph versus a change of characters.

Thrasher has once again made a great piece of Christian fiction. The Message is there, but neither oversimplified nor sugarcoated: this book contains violence, alcohol, and profanity (not explicitly but alluded to i.e. "X swore bitterly at Y, then finished his beer.") I can't see it offending the mature reader, though parents may want to peruse it before letting kids read. The novel is good reading, and the ending's satisfying and plausible. I look forward to more from this author.
Gun Lake Rocked my Face Off!  Sep 1, 2004
I loved this book! It's so refreshing to find a story that has the ability to force me to look at my own life and reflect on how to live it. All the characters are so different, and yet they struggle with the same issues...which, incidentally, are issues I struggle with myself. I think Sean was my favorite character. And probably most like me (You know, except for the whole convict thing). He wanted to be a Jim Morrison, a Clyde Barrow. His perception of reality was based on old gangster flicks and the idea of being a misunderstood and unsung hero. But then, don't we all think like that? Only, life isn't like that, and when you get down to it, he struggled with the same things we do. He's constantly asking (whether he'd admit it or not) "What kind of person does this make me?" and "How did things get this far gone?" Infact, those seem to be the questions on the minds of all the main players in this book. And rightly so. I can't think of any better questions that plague our thoughts on a daily basis, whether WE'D like to admit it or not. I love how this book puts those issues out there and lets us know it's okay to have these kind of doubts; and that no matter how far gone we think we are, there's always a way back, a way out, or a way home. Personally I think it would do everyone a lot of good to read it, and I can't wait to read his other books.
exciting suspense  Jul 28, 2004
This is an exciting read for fans that love suspense and action. The many personalities from various walks of life involved in the story are skillfully developed as the story weaves to a climax. Thrasher shows a unique talent for character development, displaying his insight into human nature. The book shows examples of the consequences of choices of ordinary people, yet offers hope even within overwhelming hopelessness. Congratulations to this rising author for another great story with lessons for all to learn!
My Top Ten  Jul 19, 2004
This book, masterfully written by novel master Travis Thrasher, is absolutely in my top ten all time favorite books. This novel redefines the classic crime/suspense tale. Read this book! It has strong action, mystery, romance, and best of all--a powerful redemtive message of love and forgiveness. The realism of this story reminds us all what a truly great novel is made of. I highly suggest this book for lovers of all genres!
Thrasher has true talent  Jul 8, 2004
I spend my summers at Gun Lake Michigan at my cottage which is what made me first pick up this book. I started reading in the evening and finished it in less than 24 hours. I could not put it down, the characters were very real, they had a lot of depth -all people I could believe existed and could imagining knowing. The interaction between them was genius. Very suspenseful, very interesting, unpredictable. Also while there is a lot of crime in it - it is not gratuitously violent. One of the best books I have ever read, definitely worth it.
