Overview
The uniqueness of Vos's emphasis on the centrality of the covenantal work of Jesus Christ in history and our possession of that work through His mediation draws us back time and again to his powerful and passionate sermons. Translated to the realm of glory itself through the proclamation of the accomplished work of our covenant Lord, and by the gift of His Spirit, we partake of unparalleled communion with God and possess Him as our highest treasure presently in Christ as our covenant God. Short of the consummation we have made His glory and joy in His people our chief end in this pilgrim life.

Publishers Description
John Murray said of him, "Dr. Vos is, in my judgment, the most penetrating exegete it has been my privilege to know, and I believe, the most incisive exegete that has appeared in the English-speaking world in this century." The uniqueness of Vos's emphasis on the centrality of the covenantal work of Jesus Christ in history and our possession of that work through His mediation draws us back time and again to his powerful and passionate sermons.

He has been called "the father of Reformed biblical theology." He earned degrees from Calvin Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Strasbourg (PhD in Arabic). In 1894 he was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in the USA. Before beginning a thirty-nine year tenure on Princeton's faculty, he was professor of systematic and exegetical theology at Calvin for five years. During his thirty-nine years as a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary, he achieved the reputation of a theologian whose biblical insight is without equal. The full impact of his exegetical labor has been realized only in recent years.

Geerhardus Vos was born in 1862 and died in 1949.

True Perception Preferable From Post-Modernism  Aug 23, 2008
The prejudice in modern preaching toward great historic preachers has left a vacancy of global proportions for truthful expository preachers. The perception has been created over the past few decades that Vos' redemptive-historical methodology is unattractive. Yet Geerhardus Vos delivered truth as a penetrative and tender-hearted advocate of righteousness, in the typical litany and oratory of grand Dutch homiletics. I would venture to say that such command, while beautiful in written form, must have evoked awe and amazement from the few privileged to have heard Vos preach.

'In the second place, the possession and enjoyment for which Jehovah offers Himself to Israel are an exclusive relationship. No matter which side we choose in the exegetical dispute as to whether the first three chapters are allegory or recite facts, in either case, be it by a unique experience or through a unique vision, the prophet has produced a marriage ideal fit to be the parable of the covenant. In this idealized form it renders most faithfully the latter's essential features. For emphasizing the pure spirituality of the relationship nothing could be more suitable. In this respect it excels even the figure of fatherhood or sonship, for these originate in nature without free choice. The bond of marriage, as conceived by Hosea, was established through a spiritual process. God, after having created Israel, sought and cultivated her affection. 'I will betroth thee unto me in faithfulness, and I will say, Thou art My people, and they shall say, Thou art our God.' Now this same idealization also appears in regard to the mutual exclusiveness of the covenant attachment. When God gives Himself to Israel it is with the clear understanding and promise that He does not do so to other people.' pg 20 - 21

The direct speech pattern observable in his preaching is worlds better and distinct from the reported speech patterns of the modern day phenomena. Somehow I fear we have lost the art of great preaching, as if it belonged to another era, and been suckered into substituting the truth for a penchant toward either frivolous entertainment, or ethical psychology. Both fail to perceive the Spirit of Truth and display a lack of conviction and a want for subject knowledge which the church has cast adrift in perilous times.

'A Jew lives in you and me and in every human heart by nature. If we ever were tempted to think ourselves able to fulfill the law of God, was it not perhaps for this reason - that the sense of God's absolute claim upon us and knowledge of us had become dim to our conscience? Since then this fault reappears in every sinner, the Preacher on the Mount repeats His sermon in the ears of each generation. He stands to plead the right of God, no matter what substitutes for Him we may have put up in our own lives.' pg 45

Better than Nothing  Jun 14, 2008
This reprint of Geerhardus Vos's "Grace and Glory" is a most welcome arrival! While this is not the complete collection of Vos's sermons, it will have to do for now. Banner of Truth (BOT), who apparently holds the copyright to the "full" corpus of Vos's extant sermons, has not republished it since its first printing in 1994. This is an odd phenomena, as Vos's sermons have been in very high demand ever since that first printing. I myself know a number of people who would love to have a copy of that wonderful BOT edition - it has a superb layout and wonderful binding. Why would a publisher not republish a book that is in such high demand?

There may be many reasons, but I fear that one of them may be growing criticism regarding Vos's biblical-theological method within BOT circles. During the past several years, the BOT magazine has printed several critical articles about Vos and his followers, particularly their "redemptive-historical" method of preaching. Perhaps this growing criticism has fed a resistance to reprinting Vos's sermons. I hope this is not the case. One need not agree with Vos in every particular to still appreciate what J. Gresham Machen said about one of Vos's sermons: "We had this morning one of the finest expository sermons I have ever heard. It was preached by Dr. Vos" (Stonehouse's Biography, pg. 72). It would be a shame to deprive the Christian world of the full corpus of Vos's wonderfully edifying sermons simply because one has quibbles with him or his followers. Besides, Vos himself (as well as many of his followers) was a devout lover of the Puritan tradition BOT seeks to represent.

Whatever BOT's reasons, we are thankful for this smaller reprint of the original 1922 edition from Solid Ground Christian Books. The text is nearly identical in type and pagination to the original edition - the only difference is that the pages themselves (though not the type) have been made smaller. At under $10, this book is very affordable--a lot cheaper that $40+ killing booksellers are making off the original BOT edition (originally available for less than half that)! I recommend that it be purchased in large quantities and (if you are pastors and elders) given to church members and families for their reading enjoyment.

Here is "Grace and Glory," indeed! In these sermons, Vos takes us to the fruitful garden of the eternal heavens above, where God and man dwell in covenantal harmony and love (Sermon 1: The Wonderful Tree). He takes us before Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, and makes us feel anew our hunger and thirst for the perfect righteousness of the kingdom of heaven (Christ alone!) (Sermon 2: Hungering and Thirsting after Righteousness). He takes us with Zaccheus to the Savior, who came to seek and save we who are lost (Sermon 3: Seeking and Saving the Lost). He takes us to the empty tomb of Jesus, and his weeping child, Mary, and calls us to join with her in proclaiming her joy at his risen presence:

"Let us then not linger at the tomb, but turn our faces and stretch our hands upwards into heaven, where our life is hid with him in God, and whence he shall also come to us as he did to Mary, to make us speak the last great "Rabboni", which will spring to the lips of all the redeemed, when they meet their Savior in the early dawn of that eternal Sabbath that awaits the people of God!" (Sermon 4: Rabboni!)

Vos takes us to the more excellent ministry (sermon 5) of the new administration of the covenant of grace--its greater permanence, clearness, glory, fuller manifestation of forgiveness, and honor. Finally, Vos calls us to a greater apprehension of that eschatological Patriarchal virtue, heavenly mindedness (sermon 6).

Once again, our only regret is that we do not have here Vos's 10(!) other extant sermons. However, anyone reading this will be happy to learn that these sermons were all published in Kerux: The Journal of Northwest Theological Seminary. If you don't want to pay the $40+ for a used copy of the BOT edition, just go to their website (www.kerux.com) and a quick search will bring them up. James T. Dennison, Jr. the editor of that journal, was the one who originally recovered these sermons many years ago, and worked laboriously to have them reprinted after 70 years collecting dust in a library. I plead with BOT: don't let them collect dust for another 70 years!

The introduction by Clark has little to commend to it. Perhaps he was limited to the few pages he has added at the beginning, and could not provide a fuller picture of Vos's life. Dennison's recent biography of Vos (Letters of Geerhardus Vos, P & R, 2006 - which I believe Clark references) will give one a much better picture of Vos as a man, a theologian, and a preacher.

Read these sermons. Get them however you can. While by no means perfect, they represent (in my opinion) some of the finest homiletical material every produced by the Reformed Church. Enjoy them, be enriched by them, and find your life hidden with the Christ he proclaims. To be sure, this book doesn't give us all of Vos's sermons, but for now, it is better than nothing.
