Item Description...
Traditionally, the Book of Ruth is viewed as a beautiful love story between Ruth and Boaz. But if you dig deeper, you?ll find startling revelations?that God makes much of broken lives, he calls men and women to serve him together, and he?s counting on his daughters to build his kingdom.

Publishers Description
This isn't the Ruth, the Naomi, or the Boaz we thought we knew. Carolyn James has unearthed startling new insights from this well-worn story ... insights that have life-changing implications for you. Naomi is no longer regarded as a bitter, complaining woman, but as a courageous overcomer. A Female Job. Ruth (typically admired for her devotion to Naomi and her deference to Boaz) turns out to be a gutsy risk-taker and a powerful agent for change among God's people. She lives outside the box, and her love for Yahweh and Naomi compels her to break the rules of social and religious convention at nearly every turn. Boaz, the Kinsman Redeemer, is repeatedly caught off-guard by Ruth's initiatives. His partnership with her models the kind of male/female relationships that the gospel intends for all who follow Jesus. Carolyn James drills down deeper into the story where she uncovers in the Old Testament the same passionate, counter-cultural, rule-breaking gospel that Jesus modeled and taught his followers to pursue. Within this age-old story is a map to radical levels of love and sacrifice, combined with the message that God is counting on his daughters to build his kingdom. The Gospel of Ruth vests every woman's life with kingdom purposes and frees us to embrace wholeheartedly God's calling, regardless of our circumstances or season of life. This story of two women who have lost everything contains a profound message: God created women not to live in the shadowy margins of men or of the past, but to emerge as courageous activists for his kingdom.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Love, Courage, and Suffering in the Book of Ruth  Jun 14, 2009
In The Gospel of Ruth: Loving God Enough to break the rules, Carolyn Custis James sets out to unpack the story of Ruth in a way that challenges historical and popular interpretations of the story of Ruth, spurred on by the ever-nagging question: is God good for women? According to James, the book of Ruth is far more than a typical romance story we have imagined it to be. Rather, it is the story of three people God used to demonstrate hesed (God-love, the pouring out of one's own selfish ambitions and agendas for the cause and benefit of others) to the people of Israel for generations to come.

Some have leveled the charge that this book is driven by the hidden agenda of promoting woman-power and thus diminishing the important work of the woman as mother and a wife. A previous reviewer specifically mentioned that this is illustrated in chapter 10. I could not disagree more. James is not diminishing the important work of wife and mother, but rather wrestling with the problem of evil and the problem of suffering. The birth of Obed did not diminish the pain of burying a husband and two sons. Those are scars that will never heal.

Ultimately, The Gospel of Ruth is, as others have mentioned, not a "woman's book." It is a book that demonstrates that men and women can relate in a manner that is not fraught with the tensions and struggles of power and authority as we traditionally understand them. It is a book that reveals the heart of God for the powerless, the destitute. It is a book that unpacks the love of God demonstrated through three people. It is a book that challenges believers to step out boldly in faith when faced with difficult circumstances. it is a book that deals honestly with suffering and pain.

I recommend it highly. Absorbing, fascinating read. Well done, Carolyn Custis James.

My favorite book of 2008/2009. I loved the many angles that give us windows to glean more of God's character and hesed/lovingkindness when viewed through Naomi's eyes especially. Very encouraging to gain more historical insights and to contemplate the depth of Naomi's plight. With our financial downturn, it's very relevant and challenges our common concept of God's love. The challenge for me? What can we do as people/churches to be God's arm in demonstrating His hesed to our communities?
The Gospel of Ruth: Loving God Enough to Break the Rules by Carolyn Custis James  May 3, 2009
The title, "The Gospel of Ruth" caught my attention one day when I was looking for a book to add to my order. As a man I had no idea what I was ordering. When the book arrived I decided to read it and realized its great value, not only for women, but for men also. The book helps us men understand how we have been slighting a great resource in advancing the kingdom of God. I shared this book with my younger sister and she was so impressed with it that she recommended it for a Bible study at her church.

Carolyn has two other books of equal value.

When Life and Beliefs Collide
Lost Women of the Bible: The Women We Thought We Knew
The Gospel of Ruth  Feb 10, 2009
This is an excellent book. The author has really done her homework and gives many new and helpful insights. Well written and readable.
God IS Good to Women  Jan 10, 2009
I was driving around in a borrowed car in a new town. I was headed towards a supermarket but took a wrong road and ended up at a Christian bookstore that I had visited two times prior and love. I went in, knowing God wanted me to look at something specifically, and I asked Him what it was. He very distinctively pointed out The Gospel of Ruth.

I truly believe Carolyn's hands were blessed by God when she wrote it. Finally a REAL view of women. Our hurts, our flaws, our STRENGTHS. None of the flowery stuff, none of the airbrushed portrayals. Us as human beings with ugly features both in and out. I was amazed to find out that other women actually wonder about their identity and their worth. I had so much difficulty reconciling between a church that treated me with so little regard because of my anatomy and the so-called ever loving unconditional God.

What gets filtered through is false and Carolyn is very blunt about that but she lets us know in a very Godly way. THERE IS A REASON this very small book made it into Scriptures. There is a reason we NEED it. We live in a world that is segregated and segmented. We live in a world that will by fallen nature discriminate and rank. But we have a God who does not care about the exterior. He does not judge or love based on our own criteria. He truly loves all- men AND WOMEN. As a matter of fact, Galatians 3:28 "there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

I thank God for using Carolyn as a catalyst for this truth. I was not a Christian for a VERY long time because I believed this religion ABHORRED women and the way they were treated was indeed abhorrent. To think that I could've been in a relationship with my loving Christ that entire time and I wasn't because at the end of the day I was simply believing a LIE.

I lastly want to add that, as the back cover states, this gospel is for BOTH men and women. That is the refreshing thing about it. A man who wants to know women should enter into relationship with them but if he wants guidelines as to how a godly man should be, look no further than Boaz. It truly is a portrait of the Blessed Alliance. I also firmly believe that in Ruth and Naomi men can shed their preconceived notions of women. We are not fragile nor perfect. We are living fallible things. We wrestle, we fight, we struggle, and we survive. All thanks to a perfect God who does not withdraw simply because we are considered "lesser beings" to society.
