Item Description...
Overview
"Greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). Taking this verse at face value provides the perfect opportunity to prove it in the educational setting of our children, say the authors of Going Public. By nurturing the life and power of Christ within them, students will be ready to stand against negative influences no matter the environment, even bringing light to a dark place. They will also benefit from many of the services that the often well-financed public school system has to offer. Readers of this practical guide will learn how moms and dads have a strategic role to play in the ongoing development of their school-age children. Discover what the Bible says about education, the three most important things to teach your public-school child, how to shape your child through teachable moments, the importance of getting involved at school and why everyone should "homeschool," in additon to public school.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Outstanding!  Sep 16, 2009
I had been really struggling with sending my son to public high school after home schooling through 9th grade. A friend heard the Pritchards on a radio program and recommended their book. It is amazing, practical, and filled with wonderful advice. It has really turned my attitude around and I can now say I am anxious to enter this journey with my son. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering public school at any age. Very benefitial and reminds you that God is really in charge of all the details anyway, so why fret.

Parents: This is a must read!  Feb 23, 2009
A refreshing read from a set of committed and passionate parents. David and Kelli have lived an exemplary life that other parents and community leaders have benefited from. They have truly lived out what they have written in this text, and have maximized the tools and strengths afforded them through the public school system. This book is a reminder that even though 'the system' can be overwhelming, it is very possible to experience success and fulfillment throughout. . .ENJOY!!!

Parenting without fear  Feb 16, 2009
I'm a 15-year veteran of public school teaching in some of the country's toughest middle and high schools, and I now have a preschool-aged child. Needless to say, it's not easy, having seen what I've seen in public schools, to make decisions about where to send him to school. (In fact, the same week I was reading this book, I was deciding which pre-school--public or private--to enroll him in.) The main thing I'm taking away from this book is that I don't have to make decisions about my son's education out of fear. God is big enough to be God even in the public schools. It's so easy to be paralyzed by fear when it comes to making decisions about our kids' futures, and we might miss out on what God could do in those situations. I can say this with no naivete about what's really out there, because, beleive me, I've seen almost everything when it comes to public education.

I especially appreciated the authors' emphasis on teaching children, from an early age, the key concepts of loving God, obeying, and using self-control. They also do a beautiful job describing the relational focus that I want to create in my family.

I highly recommend this book to parents who are looking for alternative to a fear-based approach to their kids' futures.

Required reading for those raising healthy Christian children  Feb 3, 2009
We don't have children but we are very involved in the lives of our nieces, nephews and other special children and want to ensure we are doing what we can to help raise healthy, happy and successful children. For us, Going Public was more about effective child raising philosophies and practices with an interesting twist about public schools.
I was raised in a strong Christian family and went to public schools. Many of the strategies the Pritchard discussed my parents implemented many years ago. I didn't necessarily recognize their wisdom until many years later but this book helped me to crystallize many of the learnings I had experienced. And there were many other ideas and practices that the Pritchards shared that I find myself sharing with other parents and friends. As the Pritchards state, homeschooling or attending private school may very well be the right option for your child. But there is also another important option that should be considered - public school.
I challenge you to read the book - fully - and then pray and decide having more information and many impactful stories and real-life examples that the Pritchards openly share. Important decisions like where to send your child to school shouldn't be made in fear or anger and certainly not out of ignorance. There is too much information out there to leave these decisions to chance. Any key decision finds me reaching out to others in a similar situation as well as experts who can provide perspective. Given that the Pritchards have 8 children (3 already in college) and have influenced countless others through sports and church, I would consider them "experts" to be considered with an open mind. Stories about how they handled bullies who were harassing their daughters or how they responded when their daughter wasn't going to be allowed to play basketball due to a missed deadline stuck with me long after the last page was read and has helped me to be a better influence to the children in our lives. If you are struggling with where to send your children or are at least curious in the debate, I would highly recommend Going Public. The well written and easy-to-read book is full of great examples so you can be better informed to make a more enlighten decision.

Difficult Topic, Great Book  Jan 30, 2009
Working in the public school system and being Christian have given me a good perspective on perceptions that take place in schools. This book adresses a difficult topic perfectly. My children's education is in my hands to help nurture and make sure they are getting the most from it. By having discussions with my children about our beliefs and how to respond to others that may not have those same views, I am empowering them to stand tall and feel secure in their beliefs. This book promotes discussion and being proactive with our children.
