The psalms often stretch and perplex readers as they teach, but they also open a divine window on prayer. This collection features meditations on more than 75 psalms and offers brief thoughts and background as well as suggested ways to use the psalms in prayer.

Publishers Description
There is no better place in all of Scripture than the Psalms to learn to be with God and see with the eyes of faith the face of the One who longs to form us fully in his image. The psalms often stretch and perplex as they teach, but they open a divine window on prayer. How could it be otherwise? The Psalms are God's prayer book, and they teach us to talk to God in his own language.Features meditations for more than 75 psalms, arranged in numerical order, Scripture and topical indexes. Each devotional includes the complete text of the Psalm(s) from the New Living Translation, a "devotional window" (brief meditative thoughts and/or background on the Psalm), a prayer route (one or more key phrases or verses from the Psalm, followed by suggested ways to use the Psalm in prayer).

Reviews - What do our customers think?
The Perfect Way to Begin Praying the Psalms  Mar 26, 2009
I once read that Billy Graham prays five psalms a day (completing all 150 in a month). The more I consider that practice, the more I am convinced that such spiritual discipline is much needed in our fast-paced lives. We too often lack time for prayer and Bible reading.

Most people admit that they would like to pray more. But how to start? How to continue? What to say?

We fail to realize that we have a divine prayer book available to us! Open up the Psalms and you will discover some of the most powerful prayers ever written - powerful because they were inspired by the Holy Spirit himself.

If you are looking for a resource to help you understand how to pray the psalms, then I encourage you to pick up God's Prayer Book: The Power and Pleasure of Praying the Psalms by pastor Ben Patterson. God's Prayer Book leads you through a selection of psalms, illuminating ways in which you can make these ancient prayers the cry of your own heart.

This is not a book of prayers inspired by the psalms. It is a book that puts the actual psalms in the spotlight. Patterson says just enough to stir our hearts to pray. He is a guide. He does not do the praying for you.

Neither should you expect a scholarly commentary on the psalms (though I admit I will consult this book whenever I preach through the psalms). God's Prayer Book is the best kind of devotional - one that shines light on the psalms and and offers some specific prayer points to get you started, without weighing you down with too many details.

The best part of Patterson's work is his focus on spiritual formation. Patterson believes that praying the psalms changes our desires:

"Prayer is more than a tool for self-expression, a means to get God to give us what we want. It is a means he uses to give us what he wants, and to teach us what he wants." (7)

Patterson sees the psalms as a mirror that reveal us. Whenever we read them, they show us who we are in light of God's majesty. But whenever we pray them, they change us.

God's Prayer Book contains the meditations of a man who has spent many years drinking deeply from the Scriptures. The book is also filled with good illustrations. Pastors will want to file away some of the stories for future use in sermons.

If it is true that "80 perecent of learning to pray is just showing up - and doing it" (22), then God's Prayer Book is the perfect way to get started.
great supplement to the Psalms  Nov 17, 2008
This is a beautiful book. It is more than a typical devotional book with a scripture reference and a nice thought to tie in with the verse. Instead it has the full text of selected Psalms with insights to each one. I have enjoyed reading one a day during my regular Bible-reading and prayer time.
God's Prayer Book  Nov 9, 2008
Have you ever tried to explore the Psalms? With God's Prayer Book Ben Patterson makes that possible. Mr. Patterson includes sixty-two Psalms in this text. After the Psalm, he includes short studies of several of the verses in that particular Psalm. I have been studying through the Psalms with my son and this is a wonderful resource.
A Great Prayer Aid  Nov 5, 2008
It will probably occupy a long-term spot beside my bed. There is an introductory chapter that gives some background about prayer, the Psalms, and Jesus' relationship to the Psalms. The author quotes a lot of people including St. Augustine, St. Benedict, Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Peter Kreeft. Next, there are sections on each of 65 of the psalms. For each psalm, first the psalm itself is printed. Following that, one verse is highlighted. Next there are about two pages of reflective material, starting off with a real-life story that the author relates the the psalm and followed by some prayer pointers relating to particular verses.
I've tried praying the Liturgy of the Hours on occassion and while I liked the psalms, I almost found it to be too much of a good thing--or maybe I needed to pray it more so as to become more familiar with the psalms--but in any case, I have not found it to be, at least for now, the way I need to pray the psalms. This book may be.
Great Devotional Book!  Nov 5, 2008
I really enjoyed this book! I love the Psalms and I think Patterson does an excellent job of reminding us how beautiful the Psalms are and how much they reflect human emotion. It is easy to read and follow. The chapters are short tackling one psalm each. This is an excellent devotional book and would make a lovely Christmas gift too!
