God's Covenant??  Jun 29, 2005
I have read nowhere in the bible that says God made a covenant with America. This book refers repeatedly to the covenant God made with America. The writer says that because men dedicated America to God, then God made a covenant with America. In all the covenants that I read about in the bible, God initiates the covenant. This writer is saying man initiated the covenant and God complied, which is totally contrary to how God established his covenants in the bible, but more than that the bible says nothing about God establishing a covenant with America. To me, this is adding to the word of God and Revelations 22:18 says:

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.

How dare the writer assume God made a covenant with America without scriptural backup. Also, at the end of each chapter, the writer speaks FOR God to man all kinds of things that are not in the bible. Again --adding to the word of God, in my opinion.

The history lessons in this book are interesting, but they are mingled with just too many assumptions for me. We should only trust what the word of God says, not man. If you can't show me scriptural backup for what God does and says, I'm not interested.

Also, the writer refers to such men as George Whitfield, Jonathan Edwards, David Brainard. The gospel these men believed and taught is a totally different gospel than what is preached today and also taught in this book by the writer. They taught that men were saved completely by the grace of God, with no work whatsoever by man. Men today, including Mr. Hunter preach we are saved by our own freewill, that Christ's death on the cross is not enough. It takes Christ's death plus man's decision. Not so! We are saved by Christ dying for us on the cross and that is completely enough. That's what Whitfield, Edwards, & Brainard taught and it is a different gospel than what is taught in most churches today.
The Difference One Man Can Make  Nov 24, 2003
This book deserves to be read. It is not a lenghty book (204 pages), but it chronicles in a scholarly, well-documented, readable format the faith history of America from Christopher Columbus' day to the end of the 1800's. (Book two of this series will continue from the closing of the 19th Century to the
present time.)

The difference one man can make in the destiny of a nation was illustrated time and again in this book and is the key to why I like this book. A sampling of these men: Christopher Columbus in the 15th Century explored new lands changing the maps of that day. In the early 1600's Robert Hunt erected a cross on the shores of Cape Henry, Virginia dedicating this new land to the Lord. During the 1770's the curcuit rider, George Whitefield preached Christ's message; George Washington's prayerful leadership in battle, and in politics molded our nation. Among the other men: Patrick Henry; Justice John Marshall who laid the foundation for a strong central government via the Supreme Court; Abraham Lincoln, and General Robert E. Lee were called for such a time as theirs in the mid 1800's. In 1857, Jeremiah Lanphier evangelized New York City at his "Fulton Street meetings".

The French Revolution and its effect on the countries of the Earth is fascinating reading. Reviewing the fate of Native Americans and the slavery issue are also thought provoking topics in this book.

For the "true believer" the Man who make a difference is Christ. He has blessed this land with bounty and riches beyond imagining. God's call is on the nation to rise up a committed remnant to carry forth His plan for this country.

For the unbeliever or skeptic, may I invite you to read this book to gain historical insights into America and to learn of its rich heritage?

Bill Hunter's vision and call to compile the history and faith journey of this land in "God's Covenant With America" is an example of what one man can do to make a difference.

A must-read  Nov 22, 2003
"God's Covenant With America" provides great insight into the history of America and the fundamental principles that are woven into the fabric of this country. As much as some people try to dismiss the notion, God's hand has been on this nation from its inception, and the Church needs to be reminded of its covenantal relationship. The book's definition of freedom as being based on fundamental truth, but allowing free choice, is enlighting and, hopefully, liberating. In a time when people are trying to take the idea of God out of every aspect of our lives, we need to be reminded that freedom without underlying truth leads to chaos.

If you are frustrated with the spiritual direction of this nation, read this book and be not only inspired but motivated as well!
