Item Description...
This is a fresh introduction to Christian spirituality, designed to be concise, readable, and nontechnical for those just dipping their toes into spirituality. Although the book will be useful to the religious professional, it is primarily addressed to the thoughtful reader who may not be active in a Christian community or who may have given little thought to Christianity as a source of wisdom and guidance. God Seekers presents thirty-two spiritual masters - Augustine, Teresa of Avila, Kierkegaard, Dorothy Day, Madeleine L'Engle, etc. Through capsule biographies, selected quotations, and reflection questions, Richard Schmidt explores the diverse ways Christians relate to God by bringing to life these great figures and traditions of the Christian church, from Irenaeus to Rosemary Radford Ruether.

Publishers Description
A fresh, readable introduction to Christian spirituality, God Seekers brings to life thirty-three spiritual masters from throughout Christian history. Through capsule biographies, selected quotations, and questions for reflection, Richard Schmidt presents and explores diverse ways of relating to God. Each chapter personalizes a major stream or movement of Christian spirituality by focusing on a particular key figure. "While God Seekers may be read with delight or for information . . . it is impossible to engage it for long without being seized as well by the grandeur of the panorama it lays out before us. Here, in living people, in living saints, is the history of the church, the body of Christ as we and our kind have shaped it and are shaping it."
- Phyllis Tickle (from the foreword)

God Seekers and Christian spiritualities  Jun 4, 2009
This is an interesting book to read because it gives an overview of Christian spirituality by focusing on the biography of a certain person as representative of that spirituality. It is appropriate that the book should be entitled Christian spiritualities as each of the person mentioned represent a type of Christian spirituality. I am beginning to recognise and appreciate that there is not one Christian spirituality but many Christian spiritualities.

Schmidt offers the definition of Christian spirituality as "any spirituality which sees God in Jesus Christ." That's a great definition but it does not mention the role of the Holy Spirit and the telos of Christian spirituality.

There are 32 short biographies followed by a few quotations from each of the the person mentioned. Each forms a chapter and a type of spiritualities. The first biography is of Irenaues (early Christian spirituality) and ends with Rosemary Radford Ruether (Feminist spirituality). These make interesting reading but is just too brief. What make the chapters come alive is the beautiful line portraits of the persons mentioned drawn by Dean Mosher of Fairhope, Alabama where he drew from imagination, many of the the early spiritual writers who did not have any surviving portraits.

A good book for a general introduction to Christian spiritualities.
Commentaries from thirty-three spiritual masters recognized as of key and enduring influence in Christian history  Dec 9, 2008
Christianity has a long and rich history of theological contributions towards our understanding of the nature of God, the role of Jesus and the Saints, the nature of Spirituality, the role of the Church and of the community of faith, our obligations to Divinity and to each other, and so much more. In "God Seekers: Twenty Centuries Of Christian Spiritualities", Richard H. Schmidt (Editor and Director of Forward Movement Publications) has compiled commentaries from thirty-three spiritual masters recognized as of key and enduring influence throughout the evolution of Christian history. The selected Christian commentators range from Irenaeus, Origen of Alexandria, and Augustine of Hippo, to Soren Kierkegaard, Thomas Merton, and Madeleine L'Engle. Enhanced with both a bibliography and an index, "God Seekers" is deeply rewarding, thoughtful and thought-provoking reading, making it a compellingly important contribution to the growing body of Christian literature of the non-specialist general reader, and an excellent acquisition selection for personal, ecclesiastical, community, and academic library Christian History & Theology reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
