Overview
In this masterful analysis of the religious and political dilemmas at the end of the modern age, world-renowned theologian Jurgen Moltmann assays the vaulting dreams and colossal failures of our time. He asks how we came to this point, and he argues strenuously for Christian discipleship and public theology that take sides. In both critical and creative ways he advances the specific relevance of Chrisian messianic hope to today's thorniest political, economic, and ecological questions-including human rights, environmental rights, globalization, market capitalism, fundamentalisms, and Jewish-Christian relations-and the deeper values contested therein.

He asks how we came to this point, and he argues strenuously for Christian discipleship and public theology that take sides. In both critical and creative ways he advances the specific relevance of Christian messianic hope to today's thorniest political, economic, and ecological questions-including human rights, environmental rights, globalization, market capitalism, fundamentalisms, and Jewish-Christian relations-and the deeper values contested therein. In a world reeling between utopia and disaster, Moltmann here passionately and provacatively shows how Christian discipleship, through engagement and solidarity, can blaze a redemptive path.

More About Jurgen Moltmann

Jurgen Moltmann Jürgen Moltmann (born 8 April 1926) is a German Reformed theologian who is Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology at the University of Tübingen. Moltmann is a major figure in modern theology and was the recipient of the 2000 University of Louisville and Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary Grawemeyer Award in Religion, and was also selected to deliver the prestigious Gifford Lectures in 1984-1985. He has made significant contributions to a number of areas of Christian theology, including systematic theology, eschatology, ecclesiology, political theology, Christology, pneumatology, and the theology of creation.

Influenced heavily by Karl Barth's theology, Hegel's philosophy of history, and Ernst Bloch's philosophy of hope, Moltmann developed his own form of liberation theology predicated on the view that God suffers with humanity, while also promising humanity a better future through the hope of the Resurrection, which he has labelled a 'theology of hope'. Much of Moltmann's work has been to develop the implications of these ideas for various areas of theology. While much of Moltmann's early work was critiqued by some as being non-Trinitarian, during the latter stages of his career Moltmann has become known for developing a form of Social Trinitarianism. His two most famous works are Theology of Hope and The Crucified God.

Jurgen Moltmann has published or released items in the following series...
  1. Concilium: Theology in the Age of Renewal
  2. Gifford Lectures
  3. Paternoster Theological Monographs

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Important work  Mar 9, 2007
If you've read other of Moltmann's works, you'll find a lot of echoes of previous themes. If you've never encountered Moltmann before, this is a good way to start as you not only get a good overview of his theology but also how he got there. Moltmann is highly readable, as far as theology goes. This is an important book for theology students as well as ministers, and anyone interested in the intersection of religion and "real life," especially given the state of the world today. Moltmann wrote this during the 90s, but many of his statements still apply -- even more so, actually. Also, unlike many theologians, Moltmann has a lot to say about the environment and ecology. I've gone so far as to tell my friends, "If you never read another theology book, read this one."
