Item Description...
Fr. Dominique Barthelemy, O.P. was an internationally recognized expert on Old Testament studies and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. In this highly acclaimed work he dispenses with the technical language of exegesis and linguistics and speaks more simply and directly-as a priest, a teacher, a believer -about the heart of the Biblical message. This work is a beautiful and inspiring introduction to the spiritual teaching of the Old Testament, a book that will greatly help believers to hear the renewing and rejuvenating Word of God with deepened understanding and appreciation. This is a book about the close relationship between God and man. It is about the long history of God's love for man and the struggles that man has had in remaining faithful to God and keeping intact the divine image in which he was created. Barthelemy's purpose here is to present what God says about himself and about those made in his image (man) in the inspired texts of Scripture. Fr. Barthelemy helps us see the profound unity between the Old and New Testaments, and he shows how the Old Testament is a necessary and valuable light for men of faith today. This powerful work by an acclaimed Biblical and spiritual writer will enkindle the heart and enlighten the mind of modern man to see who God really is and who we truly are in God's eyes, helping us to understand the full extent of our deep need for God and knowledge of our ultimate purpose in life.

Great Study of God and His People in the OT  Jul 24, 2008
This book was written by a Catholic priest and Hebrew Bible scholar back in the 1960s, but it stills sounds relevant today. Dominique Barthelmy discusses God's up and down relationship with His "image," ie, His covenant people. It seems that the more the people turned from God, the more that God tried to reach out to them through prophetic figures.

The book is a good reminder of how mankind has always tended to go its own way rather than God's way. It also reminds us that God has not given up on us and that He still desires to bring His people back to Him. A good read!
Great overview of Biblical Theology  Nov 25, 2007
don't remember when I had read about the book God and His Image: An Outline of Biblical Theology by Dominique Barthelemy, but I am glad I added it to my Wish List and got around to ordering it. Fr. Dominique Barthelemy O.P. was an internationally recognized expert on Old Testament studies and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission who died in 2002.

The book is exactly as it advertises an overview of Bibical Theology and thus salvation history. Fr. Barthelemy asks very interesting questions throughout and then writes to answer them as to what can be known from the scriptural evidence. What I like is that he doesn't overstep what can be known just to advance some theory. He also has the ability to write deeply on scripture while at the same time not becoming too technical and overwhelming the reader. I certainly don't claim to be any kind of expert, but I found at no time in the book did I get lost in the points he was making.

I think just the chapter he wrote "The idols and His Image" to be worth the price of the book by itself. When he writes that when man tries to build bridges to God he creates idols and when God builds a bridge to man it was the Incarnation. His insights make you look at what you might already know and to see it fresh and more deeply. Viewing Biblical theology in this outline view helps you to see the big picture of salvation history that is mainly concentrated within the Old Testament but sees its fulfillment in new Testament.

I do hope that more of his work is translated into English if this book is any indication and since this book was published by Ignatius Press I hope they bring more of his work to us if possible.
