Overview
In God against Religion Matthew Myer Boulton outlines a Christian theology that takes worship as its basic framework, conceiving worship as the occasion of not only an approach toward God in piety, but also separation from God in sin. Drawing on the thought of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and especially Karl Barth, Boulton rethinks the broadest themes of Christian theology through the lens of Christian worship. He offers three groundbreaking thoughts: that the catastrophe of "sin" is liturgy's original and continual work, that the miracle of "reconciliation" is liturgy's decisive transformation in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, and that the glory of "redemption" is and will be liturgy's end. The result is a fascinating proposal of a systematic, liturgical theology in the Reformed tradition. It will lead scholars, pastors, and anyone interested in thinking about Christian theology and Christian worship in fresh, critical, challenging directions.

Publishers Description
This volume outlines a Christian theology that takes worship as its basic framework, as the occasion of not only an approach toward God in piety but also separation from God in sin. Drawing on Luther, Calvin, and especially Karl Barth, Matthew Myer Boulton builds a Reformed liturgical theology, maintaining that the God of Jesus Christ is a "God against religion," one who saves human beings from religion by entering it, transforming it, and ultimately ending it.

Worship as Fall and Reconciliation  Nov 21, 2008
Taking his cue from Barth's critique of religion, Boulton offers a systematic exploration of worship as instance of both sin and redemption. The basic argument is that 1)worship is not a safe refuge from the world of sin, but is the primary site of separation from God and 2) in Jesus Christ, God enters into and transforms worship into the site of reconciliation. Along the way, the author offers an exciting reading of Barth (with careful attention to the Christian Life fragments), a fresh and brilliant interpretation of Gen. 2-4 centering on worship as fall, a helpful appropriation of Luther's famed "simul iustus et peccator", and some important proposals for re-forming worship (particularly baptism and eucharist).

I found this book extremely well-written and convincing. The basic argument is important, but the book is also filled with remarkable exegetical insights and insightful footnotes. I can't imagine anyone interested in engaging worship theologically (as if there's any other way!) who would not benefit from and enjoy this book.
