Item Description...
Hobby Farms GOATS: Small-Scale Herding, written by hobby farmer and prolific author and columnist Sue Weaver, is an essential guide to the wonderful world of goats. This colorful guide discusses goats of all types, including dairy goats, used for milk and cheese; meat goats; fiber goats, prized for their mohair and cashmere; recreational goats, beloved by children for their great personalities and silliness; and brush goats, the lawnmowers of creative hobby farmers and suburbanites. Weaver offers excellent advice on how to purchase a goat: sensible and direct, she advises newcomers that while goats can be profitable, they should not rush in. Before the reader fills his backyard with a herd of goats, the author warns him or her to consider that while goats are cute, personable, charming, and imminently entertaining... they] are also destructive...mischievous, sometimes ornery, and often exasperating. The book lists the various breeds of goats commonly available as meat and dairy producers, carefully spelling out their advantages and drawbacks. In the chapter on selecting a goat, the author instructs the reader to be aware of the overall health and soundness, and to consider such the animals' horns and teeth. The book also covers general care for a small herd of goats, including outdoor housing and feeding, general health care, and maintenance. For hobby farmers ready to dive into the world of reproducing their goats, there are chapters on breeding, mating, and Bringing Kids into the World. All goat keepers will be enlightened by the information in the chapter on behavior and solving everyday problems with their often capricious caprines. Since the focus of the book is for hobby farmers, Goats also addresses how to make money from the small-scale herd, offering advice on managing, selling, and marketing goat-derived products. The book concludes with an extensive glossary of over 150 terms, an appendix of common goat diseases, and a resource section of useful goat-relevant books, websites, and associations. Fully indexed.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
great reference book  Aug 31, 2008
great reference book. I am a "novice" goat person. I have seven young goats and the book has been very helpful in becoming more proficient in caring for my goats.
Get it before you get goats  Apr 4, 2008
Nay. Nay. Not a single person interested in living with goats should miss this book aptly titled, Goats. In the work, Sue Weaver covers the basic, yet crucial, elements involved in raising goats as pets or as a business venture. She clearly loves the little ruminants, and as a consequence she methodically cautions the newcomer from rushing into the wonderful world of goats.

Topics covered in the book include food, shelter, breeding, health care and how to go about finding the right species of goat for your purposes and personality. Weaver gives a nice overview of the four major marketable uses of goats, including a very interesting look at ethnic and cultural preferences of goat meat for select holidays and special occasions.

The vignettes from the farm that are included in the book tie the text to day-to-day reality. The best of all comes at the back of the book. Here, Weaver lists numerous resources, provides a glossary of goat jargon and presents a fantastic summary of common diseases that plague goats. These appendices are reason enough to purchase Goats and make it a hands-on keeper.
Goat city  Mar 31, 2008
This book is very helpful for a beginner or newbe to the art and pleasure of keeping goats. It will not be as helpful if you are looking to use goats as a business for that you will have to look else where otherwise I highly recommand it.
Mixed review. very basic info, more for entertainment.  Jan 14, 2008
I am a novice to goats and this book failed to give me the info I needed.

The reading was easy and had good story lines.

I had to buy Storey's Guide to Raising Beef Cattle to get a real grasp of the information i needed (That book is #1 for a beginner).

"Storey's Guide to Raising Beef Cattle" is a great book, and a must for the beginner.
Used for hobby goat farmer  Dec 12, 2007
I got this book for my dad. He has a herd of 10 goats (and 2 donkeys) with the purpose of clearing brush on about 8 acres of land. He'd never had goats before, but has found this to be a useful reference.
