Item Description...
Special agent Julia Matheson races to track the source of a virus that can infect and destroy specific individuals by matching their DNA.

Publishers Description

If you breathe...It will find you.

The list of 10,000 names was created for maximum devastation. Business leaders, housewives, politicians, celebrities, janitors, children. None of them is aware of what is about to happen--but all will be part of the most frightening brand of warfare the world has ever known.

The germ--an advanced form of the Ebola virus--has been genetically engineered to infect only those people whose DNA matches the codes embedded within it. Those whose DNA is not a match simply catch a cold. But those who are a match experience a far worse fate. Within days, their internal organs liquify.

Death is the only escape.

The release of the virus will usher in a new era of power where countries are left without defense. Where a single person--or millions--could be killed with perfect accuracy and zero collateral damage. Where your own DNA works against you.

The time isn’t coming. It is now. Pray the assassins get you first.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Very Entertaining   Mar 25, 2007
Germ is an exciting ride through the world of madness and revenge and what it can do to a person. The good guys are intelligent, caring and brave (but not over-the-top superhumans). The bad guys are about as evil as they get, thus making this book something younger readers and squeamish people should stay away from. Between the Ebola virus descriptions and the assassins the violence is extreme and graphic but true to form Robert leaves out the unnecessary foul language and sex. For that I'm thankful. Although I wouldn't consider this a spiritual novel there is a character that is a pastor and he is a good man. Unfortunately when the time comes where salvation must be preached he doesn't do it. It was not consistent with any true believers actions. I found the book entertaining and fast-paced but if you're looking for a life changing biblical message you're not going to find it here.
Creating Directed Killer Viruses  Mar 7, 2007
The study of disease is fascinating. Of course, in recent years, the study of disease as an unnatural phenomenon has become more prominent--the manufacture of disease and the possible use of disease as a weapon has become vivid in this age of terrorism. Mr. Liparulo has taken this idea and run with it in his new novel, Germ.

The basis of this novel is that a group of children smuggled out of Nazi Germany in the waning days of World War II are brought to the United States. They form the nucleus of a team that develops means of germ warfare. There is a break in the group and one of the scientists becomes a renegade. It turns out that Ebola is not a natural disease but is, in fact, an artificial and, more than that, can be targeted to a particular person's DNA.

Karl Litt, the scientist is question, is ready to demonstrate his invention to the world as part of his revenge against his former mentor, Kendrick Reynolds. Inadvertently caught up in the task to stop Litt are a federal agent, Julia Matheson; a doctor, Allen Parker; and his brother, Stephen. Lined up against the good guys is Atropos; basically a super-assassin(s).

It's an interesting premise and the plot unfolds easily with new information being doled out as needed. The characters are interesting and Liparulo isn't afraid to kill off principle characters if this serves the logical development of the plot. It's a move deserving of respect as is his willingness to give the police a victory or two. If he still allows amateurs to overcome professional killers; well, no one's perfect.

In the end, Germ is a fun and interesting book that plays on the currently popular fear of disease; particularly, weaponized disease. If this is a subject that interests you, this is a book worth reading.
Liparulo doesn't give readers a chance to catch their breath  Feb 26, 2007
Opening with a horrific attention grabber featuring the grueling death of a man stricken by the Ebola virus, Germ quickly jumps to a high octane chase scene which sets the tone for the rest of the novel--i.e., plentiful action sequences, interrupted by the briefest of expository scenes, building up to an explosive crescendo that would make even James Bond wince from the noise. In other words, a lot of good, clean, bloody, fun.

Liparulo posits the creation of a designer virus that moves from host to host, causing only cold like symptoms in most, but resulting in death for a select few. The virus, you see, searches for a specific DNA pattern; once it finds its target, it mutates into Ebola, swiftly liquefying its victims' internal organs. The creator of the virus, Karl Litt (the son of a Nazi researcher), has chosen ten thousand targets in the United States, in order to demonstrate the virus' effectiveness, and to achieve a measure of revenge against a former ally, the powerful and well-connected former cold warrior, Kendrick Reynolds.

Drawn into the fray when a member of Litt's organization attempts to blow the whistle on the scheme, FBI Agents Goodwin Donnelley and Julia Matheson find themselves besieged on all sides, fighting off Litt's assassin (an ubiquitous and deadly killer code named Atropos) and Reynolds' operatives. Eventually, Matheson teams with innocent (but surprisingly competent and resourceful) bystanders Dr. Allen Parker and his brother Stephen to root out the cause of the evil before they become collateral damage. Their search leads them to unexpected locales, where they do battle with Litt and his men.

To boil things down to their essentials: you'll enjoy reading Germ if you've ever shuddered while reading non-fiction books like Richard Preston's The Hot Zone, or if you've ever thrilled to novels like Daniel Kalla's Pandemic. But you'll enjoy it mostly because it's a great yarn, a literary shot of adrenaline that's fast, fierce, and fulfilling. Don't be daunted by its size, either. At nearly five hundred pages, Germ is a veritable brick, but, don't worry, it goes by in flash, segueing quickly from one action sequence to another, barely allowing a mesmerized audience the chance to catch its breath.
I'd give it more stars if I could  Feb 22, 2007
Bottom line: I enjoyed this book very much. From first page to last, it held my attention and pulled me into an exciting world of assassins, designer viruses, chases, and twists. Lots of research, without getting bogged down in scientific explanations. Lots of action, without losing character development. Out-of-the-gate action, without forgetting to make the ending big and rewarding. Lots in this book to like.

Briefly, it's about a biologist who develops a custom Ebola virus that kills only the people he programs it to find (by encoding their DNA in it). His old (really old) boss is hunting him for his own reasons, and a group of people who learn about the virus are trying to find him...before the biologist's assassins get them. Good stuff.

If you want a fast-paced, well-researched, well-written yard, this one will do it for you.
Just OK  Feb 19, 2007
When I read the jacket at the bookstore I just had to get it. And seeing how the author was so acclaimed from his "Comes A Horseman" novel I figured this would be a great book. All I can really say about it is it's one of those stories that builds up and builds up but never really delivers.
