Item Description...
An Insight Publishing Group Title Many years ago, as a young student, I read Sherwood Anderson's novel Winesburg, Ohio, and was fascinated by it as I got to know the unusual and distinct characters. As a result of that experience, I felt prompted to write about my part of the country, West Oklahoma, since, as far as I know, nobody has ever written about that particular area. Sometimes referred to as cotton and wheat country, it was a colorful large colony of Amish people and even had a town named Berlin, but with the accent on the first syllable, Berlin. Some of the characters in this book actually existed, all of whom are now deceased; but in memory, they are still very much alive, with, of course, certain deeds and conversations that are purely fictional. Not all of these memorable people could be featured in anything less than an encyclopedia set, but the few featured in this limited work do reflect the character and dialect of that area of red earth and its amazing population of strong, hardy people with their determination to survive and play their particular role in that challenging environment that drew the greatest strength out of the strong and made the weak stronger than they believed they could be. At any rate, the players in this drama fit their roles well and reflect the amazing ability to exist in some of the strangest circumstances that fate can determine. Thus, they become individual characters and constitute the grotesque nature of the gallery in which they are an essential part.

About Time...  May 26, 2007
Just placed my order for two copies of this book -- I have, however, had the privilege of previewing several chapters as they were written over the years.

Grady Walker was one of my English professors at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The colorful and "almost" unbelievable tales he tells in this collection are delightful, hilarious, shocking, and poignant reflections in and around the West Oklahoma town of Sayre. Oh, and did I mention grotesque?

Many, many people in Dr. Walker's circle of friends, colleagues, and students have waited many, many years for the completion and publication of this novel. I hope that many, many more will discover it and be enriched (or disturbed) as they immerse themselves in the stories of deepest, darkest, Oklahoma.
