Reviews - What do our customers think?
Very Helpful Resource - Especially for New Pastors  Feb 4, 2010
I only wish I had read this book in Seminary - since I held my very first funeral only two weeks after I walked into my first church.

You'd think, since I'm a second career pastor, that age and experience go together. After all, I had attended many funerals and even assisted at two during my internship. But it's a lot different when you are put into a new environment and suddenly YOU are the one everyone is looking to for answers.

The book begins with meeting the family and walking alongside of them as they plan the funeral, It includes how to deal with estranged family members, and other problems you might encounter. It includes information on dealing with costs and suggestions of how you might work with family members in assisting at the funeral home.

Resources are provided in how to deal with the wake, viewing, or visitation time, whether it is formal or is a meal at the family home. The most important time I have spent with families is during these gatherings, and I was grateful to see that this was included.

Under the "Day of the Service" the book includes every aspect of the service at the church (including handling choices regarding music) and the graveside service itself. Something I have not seen in any other resource is your role in the dinner following the service.

It contains a section on "special circumstances" and ends with some basic sermons that can be used as the basis of most of the kinds of funerals you will encounter in your pastorate.

The section on "Special Circumstances" became very important to me recently when my mother went into Hospice and my Dad asked if I wanted to conduct the funeral. I gave Dad my honest answer, "I need to be a daughter right now, not a pastor," and when I got to my office I ran across "Holding funerals for family members." I felt very affirmed when it discussed our needs as pastors to be the ones to receive care as well as give care.

If you are a new pastor, or a friend of someone in the process of becoming one, this is an awesome resource to have available. This is one area where on-the-job training just doesn't make it.

Five stars - because I can't think of a single area that it missed, and because it is the only resource I have seen that covers the subject so thoroughly and with such sensitivity.

A sensitive guide to eulogizing the dead  Sep 4, 2008
Death is inescapable, and families must face it happening to the ones they hold dear. "Funerals with Today's Families in Mind: A Handbook for Pastors" is a guide for religious leaders in helping family during tough times, when they are in need of tender care the most. Covering the issues family face, what a pastor could do to help, and the question of religious issues be it with the deceased or the attendees. "Funerals with Today's Families in Mind" is a sensitive guide to eulogizing the dead, even if their beliefs clashed with one's own.
