Publishers Description
Why are women's friendships so tricky?
During a particularly painful time in her life, Sarah Zacharias Davis learned how delightful-and wounding-women can be in friendship. She saw how some friendships end badly, others die slow deaths, and how a chance acquaintance can become that enduring friend you need.
"The Friends We Keep "is Sarah's thoughtful account of her own story and the stories of other women about navigating friendship. Her revealing discoveries tackle the questions every woman asks:
- Why do we long so for women friends?
- Do we need friends like we need air or food or water?
- What causes cattiness, competition, and co-dependency in too many friendships?
- Why do some friendships last forever and others only a season?
- How do I foster friendship?
- When is it time to let a friend go, and how do I do so?
With heartfelt, intelligent writing, Sarah explores these questions and more with personal stories, cultural references and history, faith, and grace. In the process, she delivers wisdom for navigating the challenges, mysteries, and delights of friendship: why we need friendships with other women, what it means to be safe in relationship, and how to embrace what a friend has to offer, whether meager or generous.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Well written, but not biblically strong  Mar 25, 2010
I enjoyed and appreciated the writer's perspectives and candid narratives. However, I expected to read more encouragement from a biblical perspective since Zacharias-Davis is the daughter of Ravi. The cultural comparison seems more like an anthropological piece than anything coming near to biblically informed writing. Davis is obviously well-educated and a talented writer. I give her that much.
The Friends We Keep  Mar 16, 2010
This is an account of the experiences of the author and of other women she consulted concerning friendships. She uses personal stories, cultural references, and historical facts to analyze friendships among women. She tries to answer questions such as why we need other women as friends, what it means to have a safe friendship, and how to embrace whatever a friend has to offer.

I stopped reading about halfway through. I found it rather boring. Susan Zacharias Davis made many references to movies, the majority of which I had not seen. Whatever comparison point she was trying to make about the way women acted towards each other in the particular movie did not mean anything to me. I am not familiar with many of the books she referenced, so again, the connection was lost.

I think I am not one for deeply analyzing relationships. I have friends and am a friend. Some friendships have come and gone over the years, depending on the circumstances and situations. True friends enjoy one another's company, recognize one another's strengths and weaknesses, and value the friendship. I believe God puts us together with other women so we can strengthen them and be strengthened by them.

There are guided discussion questions at the end of The Friends We Keep.
A Meditation on Friendship  Jan 5, 2010
Sarah Zacharias Davis has written a meditation on friendship which draws upon her own experience, stories from other women and relevant literary references. She shares with her readers the results of her own quest for understanding why friendship is such an integral part of a woman's soul. She discusses the negative aspects of damaging friendships, why women long for friends, the temporary versus the long term friendships and how to let go when necessary. By examining the negative emotions that crop up in friendships the book outlines how trust and respect make for safe relationships where both parties can reveal there true selves without fear.

I found this book to be very realistic and relevant to the understanding of something that is often taken for granted. It would be a helpful book to have around if you are experiencing difficulties in your relationships, or are interested in enriching your current friendships. By gaining understanding of how gossip, jealousy, competition and co-dependence can ruin trust your friendships you can be on guard if you find yourself falling into these negative states. The book also prompted me to think about the importance of friendships and how they have shaped my personal life experiences. It was easy to read and a beautifully presented book. My only complaint was that there were too many rhetorical questions throughout the writing.
A worthwhile and highly recommended read  Oct 12, 2009
The friendship between women is worlds different than the friendship between men. "The Friends We Keep: A Woman's Quest for the Soul of Friendship" is a discussion of the friendships of women and how their relationships are unique. So often women's friendships involve competition, where there's lot of unfriendly behavior, yet the women who have these rivalries end up friends for a lifetime. Examining this anomalies, author Sarah Zacharias Davis offers much food for thought for women and their friendships. "The Friends We Keep" is a worthwhile and highly recommended read.
Really hit the nail in the head  Sep 21, 2009
This book put into words so many things I had been thinking about friendships with women. It really explained a lot about why friendships between women are so different and perfectly described many of the challenges I have face in my own personal relationships. I found it very useful in helping me to understand how other women think and why they react the way they do. It also helped me to understand more about myself and how I can better understand my own needs in friendship.
