Item Description...
"Death was not considered enough punishment for the Christians," wrote John Foxe, "who were subjected to the cruelest treatment possible. Nevertheless, the church continued to grow, deeply rooted in the doctrine of the apostles and watered with the blood of the saints." This classic book recounts the chilling, yet ultimately inspiring, deaths of early Christian martyrs---from the times of the apostles through the sixteenth century. This edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs, originally published in 1563, is abridged and modernized for ease of reading. A book every Christian should read, it's available in a handsome, keepsake binding.

He began his academical studies at the age of twenty-one years, and graduated from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1828, in which year he was licensed to preach. The first year after graduation he spent in Western New York, in the employment of the American Tract Society. Then for three years he edited the Cincinnati Christian Journal. He was ordained to the ministry July 27, 1831, by the Presbytery of Cincinnati. In the following year he returned to New England, and was installed Dec. 9 as pastor of the Congregational Church in Lyndon, Vt., remaining until the winter of 1835. After spending a year and a half as acting pastor at Cabotsville, Mass., he was installed in Warner, N. H., in 1837. Meriden, Conn., was his next field of labor, where he was installed in 1840; from this charge he was dismissed more than twenty-five years afterward, removing to Barnet, Vt., where he died, Jan. 6, 1869. Among his literary remains are five published discourses. John Foxe (1516/17 - 18 April 1587) was an English historian and martyrologist, the author of Actes and Monuments (popularly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs), an account of Christian martyrs throughout Western history but emphasizing the sufferings of English Protestants and proto-Protestants from the fourteenth century through the reign of Mary I. Widely owned and read by English Puritans, the book helped mould British popular opinion about the Catholic Church for several centuries.

John Foxe lived in Lincolnshire Boston/Lincolnshi. John Foxe was born in 1516 and died in 1587.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Easy to Read  Dec 29, 2007
I bought two versions of this book, the other being in the original English of Foxe. I would recommend this version over the other since it is a lot easier to read, follow and understand. I wish it were hardcover, but it is a good choice otherwise.
S.C. Jyles  Dec 1, 2007
This is such a moving about how and why we should be able to suffer for our faith in our God. If this book does not inspire you to be a christian on your faith in God alone well I just don't know how you could call yourself a christian and hold your head up. This book has inspired me by the faith of others gone on before me to be able to withstand anyone or anything for who and what I believe in. To read in the Bible what some christian went through and it doesn't really go into full detail (the Bible) and then to have the Spirit to lead you to this book well it made me feel ashame of the way I have acted about people making fun of me because I am a disciple of Christ. I am a student in the word of God. I would highly recommend this book to weak christians or those being persecuted because of your faith in our Saviour.
Ultimate Christian Classic - Updated!  Sep 25, 2007
This the the most pure, most sincere book on Christians ever (next to the Bible, of course). Its pages are blood-soaked testimonies to men and women who did nothing much else, than give their lives for the cause of Christ.

*there is a publication solely devoted to John Calvin, titled, 'God the Creator, God the Redeemer' which is also a Bridge-Logos book. Calvinists are not targeted by the New Foxe's Book of Martyrs, which is true to the original.
Foxe's Book of Martyrs  Jul 1, 2007
I have heard many ministers referring to this book lately. It is quite informative and a help in my studies. The S&H cost more than the book, but it was worth every penny.
Murder and religion.  Apr 15, 2007
Fox's "Book of Martyrs" is a must read for anyone wanting to read about the dark side of Christian history.
This book gives the gory details of persecution and murder in different countries,by various authorities.
The book details the deaths of the Disciples in the first part of the book.
The martyrdoms detailed in this book go back to various Roman Emperors and following that of the Popes. The Inquisition is included.Persecutions of the Quakers and the Albigenses are listed also.Read how "Bloody Mary" earned her nickname.

This book shows that religious differences of beliefs were not always tolerated or forgiven!
