Overview
In search of an ancient whale fossil, paleontologist Dr. Katie James leads an expedition in Iraq, not knowing that her archrival, Nick Murad, will be searching for the same fossil, but when Katie makes a groundbreaking discovery, she is forced to collaborate with Nick to analyze the find before a fundamentalist government faction destroys it. Original.

Publishers Description
Fossil Hunter is an Indiana Jones-style thriller that explores the Intelligent Design controversy from the points of view of two field scientists working in the strife-torn countries of Iran and Pakistan. When paleontologist Dr. Katie James leads an expedition to search for an ancient whale fossil rumored to be in the Iraqi desert, she has no idea her archrival, Nick Murad, will be searching for the same fossil. But then Katie makes a ground-breaking discovery and is forced to collaborate with Nick to analyze the find before it's destroyed by a fundamentalist government faction. Nick and Katie's initial results fly in the face of current scientific theory, and it seems the whole world turns against them, including those they thought they could trust. Then the fossil disappears, sending Nick and Katie on a chase that could cost them their reputations, their careers—even their lives.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
GREAT BOOK!  Apr 22, 2010
Simply said, I am definitely picking up another one of John's books, and to be honest I wish it was another account of "the adventures of Katie James".

What I appreciate most was the main thought that John drove home so well, which was best explained by God's conversation with Job. It is awesome that the author knows God's word and allowed His word to guide him in his writing. We are scientists because we don't have the answers, and are hopelessly misleading ourselves (one way or the other) if we think we already know where we'll end up.

John chose a great background and setting to the story with Iraq and the scientific community. I completely identified with the main character, and the others were believable. And it was great how John developed the relationship between Nick and Katie. I quite appreciate how he approached that very common issue of being "unequally yoked." - As I am writing about my reading experience, I am experiencing the excitement I had throughout the story. And I must say that the author had me in suspense throughout the entire story as to where he would end up. For the longest time he seemed to be heading for theistic evolution, then I thought he would actually be going for a 6 day creationist view, and then he ended in the best way possible. God wrote both the bible and the "book" of science, and all we know is that they will not contradict each other. We need to allow God to speak through the facts.

Several times throughout the story I laughed out loud at the humour between Katie and Nic. It was great!

I look forward to reading more of John Olson's work!

A Cross Between 24, Indiana Jones, and Expelled  Jan 7, 2010
Fossil Hunter, by my friend John Olson, is a wonderful combination of 24, Indiana Jones, and Expelled. When paleontologist Dr. Katie James leads an expedition to search for an ancient whale fossil rumored to be in the Iraqi desert, she has no idea that her archrival, Nick Murad, will be searching for the same fossil. But then Katie makes a groundbreaking discover and is forced to collaborate with Nick to analyze the find before its destroyed by a fundamentalist government faction.

When Nick and Katie's initial results fly in the face of current scientific theory, it seems the whole world turns against them, including those they thought they could trust. Then the fossil disappears, sending Nick and Katie on a chase that could cost them their reputations, their careers, and even their lives.

Set in contemporary Iraq and in the midst of the intelligent design debate, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat page after page. The characters are round and well developed and the plot is fast moving with more twists and turns than a roller coaster. It's a fun read.

A fictional account of the evolution vs ID debate  Jul 4, 2009
The book "Fossil Hunter" by Dr. John B. Olson was published to coincide with the release of the documentary film "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed", in which scientists who advocate Intelligent Design (ID) are interviewed. I really wanted to like this book, but the characterizations left me cold. Dr. Katie James, a world-renowned paleontologist, is sent to the Middle East to survey a whale fossil that could shed new light on evolution. She's billed by reviewers as the "female Indiana Jones" but the character Indiana Jones was an archaeologist, not a paleontologist. Also, he could absolutely kick her utt any day of the week.

The whale fossil is stolen by nomads, but Dr. James makes another discovery: a human fossil that proves controversial. The Islamic government wants it to remain buried, but Dr. James works with another paleontologist, Dr. Nick Murad, in trying to confirm its origin. The problem is that the plot is too simplistic. There's the usual university-level political infighting (which involves Dr. James' boss, Dietrich Fischer); the book makes it seem like this goes on at every university in every science department. This is simply not true. Secondly, Dr. James' father is a preacher which makes her, in most eyes, a creationist. I think this is a bit ridiculous because what her father believes is not necessarily what she believes. The fact that characters in this book repeatedly draw conclusions without finding out all the facts makes them seem stupid.

There's some decently written dialogue between the two protagonists regarding the evolution versus intelligent design debate, which is presumably why this book was written.

Not for the true Creationist  Apr 29, 2009
Just a warning to Christian readers- this book takes the same middle-of-the-road stance on evolution that most people decide on when they want to believe in some evolution and some of the Bible. To be specific, this book expresses a belief in small evolutionary changes in humans over the course of several millions of years (Apparently that's supposed to be more "Christian" than believing in large evolutionary changes over the course of billions of years). This book is marketed as a Christian novel, but clearly rejects the Biblical 7-day creation.

A fair tale, but way too much "chase and hide" and more chasing and hiding.  Mar 9, 2009
"Fossil Hunter" starts with a good premise, that of archeologist in competition to discover ancient whale fossils. In the end, the book loses the competition between the two groups and degenerates into race here, chase there, hide from bad guys, and does not really come to much of a climax. Some romantic elements were also here, but they came up lame, in my opinion.

When compared the "Oxygen" this book falls far short, and I was disappointed.

Also, I wish publishers would STOP putting advertising on their books. My copy of "Fossil Hunter" had a banner ad for a movie across the bottom of the back of the book. Tacky!
