Reviews - What do our customers think?
Disappointed  Feb 20, 2007
I have to confess that I was disappointed in this book.It seemed to me
that the story really did not go anywhere, it just went on and on. The
play practices took up so much of the book and did not seem to me that
it had any bearing on the story. I was so sure the young drunk driver
was going to be taken under the wing of John Baxter. I kind of just scanned
over parts of the book, I put it down many times and had to force myself
to finish it, It was a gift to me, so I did finish it, I also was given
Found, but I'm going to read something else before I start that. Karen
Kingsbury's Redemtion Series were books I could not put down. I wish
these were as good..
Great book  Jan 9, 2007
As always, Karen Kingsbury does it again. Riveting, entertaining, moving story and characters -- all in one beautifully written series. Highly recommend.
Typical Contemporary Christian novel  Nov 4, 2006
Two people recommended Karen Kingsbury to me as an author. So I checked "Forgiven" out of the library.

I found it hard to finish. I ended up skimming through the last half. The dialogue was uninspiring to say the least: "Hey, how are ya?" "Hey, you doing okay?" "think I'll go hang out with so-and so", etc.

There seemed to be too many characters: the only difference in most of them is that some were "Baxters" and some weren't. I couldn't feel sympathy for any of them because they weren't developed by the author. She calls Katy "beautiful" but doesn't really describe her. Peculiarities, mannerisms and personality traits of any of these people are not really fleshed out to enable the reader to connect. The same applies to the physical settings in which the story takes place. There is no description of the church where the children practice, or the countryside (except a nature trail when it rained) or anything else that would add a realistic "recognition" dimension to the story. Rather, the author depends on up to date technology,(her characters spend a lot of time flipping open their cell phones, clicking their computer mice, etc.) current buzzwords, movies, plays (like mentioning the musical "Wicked") and world situations to give her story "authenticity".

Katy spent an inordinate amount of time practicing her little play with the children - to the point of yawning repetition.. ( And by the way, I wondered why she felt so "called of God" to do plays like "Annie". Harmless little piece of course, but what's so spiritual about it?)

Then, in the end, the "movie star" goes back to his Hollywood world, even after his life-changing "commitment", and Katy continues her "sacred calling" of directing her little theatre.

I've read too many "Christian" novels like this: with colorless characters, plodding dialogue and contrived situations that are supposed to bring a lump to the reader's throat.

This is just another one of them.
She's Done It Again!  Nov 3, 2006
Karen is one of my favorite authors. FORGIVEN hadn't even arrived and my daughters were begging to read it before I did. I appreciate Karen's ability to write about real life situations interwoven with Biblical truth and hope. Her stories are filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing. I read all her books quickly (can't put them down for too long) and haven't been disappointed yet!
An inspirational story of mercy and hope  Sep 8, 2006
I have read all the books to date in the Baxter series
and I just wanted to say regarding other readers who were less drawn-in to the story, that following the 'Baxter family' from the beginning is where it's at in this series. They become like an extended family you wish you could befriend and interact with. Even though at times the story can seem too surreal to be realistic - then Karen throws a curve and adds dimension as another 'real' tragedy occurs. The way it plays out is nothing short of moving and inspirational. I have personally faced the loss of a dear loved one and I know the power of grief. It is felt in these pages and in the message of learning to take everything to God for healing, hope and peace.
God is good and He does work in our lives through sadness to bond us closer to Him and each other. Prayer works!
