Item Description...
This groundbreaking book challenges decades of misrepresentation of Christian Zionism and questionable theology, exploding the myth that J. N. Darby stole the doctrine of the pretribulation rapture from his contemporaries. By revealing the truth behind the man and his message, Paul Wilkinson vindicates Darby and spotlights the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ as the center piece of his theology.

Christian Zionist eschatology is claimed by Christian anti-Zionists, to be one of the sinister influences driving American foreign policy in the Middle East. Hysterical accusations, overstatements and demonisation are almost standard fare Christian Zionists receive from many evangelical writers. In the mist of confusion For Zion's Sake brings the vital clarity of a Christian Zionist explaining what they actually believe and do not believe. For Zion's Sake seeks to reposition Christian Zionism back into historical Evangelical orthodoxy, delivering a challenge to those who go beyond brotherly eschatological disagreement to slanderous graceless attacks.

In chapter 1 Wilkinson gives a pacy potted history of Zionism, which is the vital historical background many Christians lack. He then defines Christian Zionism and catalogues its beliefs. Wilkinson identifies Christian Zionists exclusively as those holding to Pre-Millennialism and also subscribing to the belief in the reestablishment of the Temple and sacrificial system in Jerusalem. His definition of Christian Zionism excludes many Christian supporters of Israel who do not hold to that eschatology. Maybe such people ought to be called Zionist Christians!

In chapter 2 Wilkinson gives a valuable and well referenced introduction to the phenomenon of Christian Palestinianism. Authors such as Stephen Sizer and Colin Chapman seek to invalidate Christian Zionism by identifying it as an evangelical fundamentalist aberration, Wilkinson disagrees and uncovers the often ignored liberation theology roots of Christian Palestinianism, particularly as expounded by the organisation Sabeel. The founding of Sabeel, argues Wilkinson, gave a much-needed boost to Liberation Theology, a South American phenomenon rooted in theological liberalism, that was rapidly running out of steam. Sabeel was founded on a liberal theological agenda and, as such, can be seen as part of a struggle to make the ecumenical movement more relevant. It is worth buying this book for this chapter alone.

"Christian Palestinianism", argues Wilinson is the reactionary flip-side of Christian Zionism. "All the basic elements of Christian Zionist eschatology are reversed, so that the Bible is seen to be Christian, not Jewish, the land of the Bible is Palestine not Israel, the Son of God is a Palestinian not a Jew, the Holocaust is resented not remembered, 1948 is a catastrophe not a miracle, the Jewish people are illegal occupiers not rightful owners, and Bible prophecy is a moral manifesto and not a signpost to the Second Coming." (page 65)

In chapter 3 Wilkinson seeks to rescue the reputation of John Nelson Darby from the widespread character assassination visited upon the memory of this founding father of the Brethren Movement. Darby is portrayed by Christian Palestinianists as the "Herzl of Christian Zionism" though few outside the Brethren have heard of him. Wilkinson uses Darby's own writing and correspondence to plug the gap left by recent Darby scholarship. Wilkinson does not gloss over the problems in Darby's life, and the account of his ministry is engrossing and enlightening. In chapter 4 Wilkinson examines Darby's eschatology and debunks the 'Darby myth' criticizing the "shabby scholarship" that has been content to use secondary sources for decades. Chapter 5 gives a fascinating historical overview of pre-millenialism in the Puritans era. Chapter 6 examines 19th century Restorationism and highlights the overlooked but important distinction between Christian Zionist futurism and Christian Restorationist historicism that Christian Palestinianists erroneously lump together. Using primary sources, Wilkinson carefully refutes the frequently-made claim that Darby was linked to the nineteenth-century charismatic Edward Irving. Chapter 7 takes a balanced look at the contributions of Christian Zionists toward the reestablishment of the State of Israel. Chapter 8 returns to Darby by evaluating his impact upon American church life.

The Christian Palestinianist onslaught against Darby and Dispensationalism is part of a smoke screen for anti-Jewish sentiment. To criticise Israel's government for particular policies is not necessarily to be anti-Zionist, to desire and work for the eradication of the State Israel is. Shamefully, an increasing number of Christians have been carried along by this tide of anti-Semitism, re-branded as eschatological and political anti-Zionism.

Whether you agree or disagree with the eschatology of Christian Zionism, this book, which is a result of Wilkinson's PhD studies, is as vital as it well written. It is meticulously researched from original sources and is a fully referenced scholarly resource. Whether one is a Christian Zionist or not, For Zion's Sake is the book to be consulted for a proper understanding of the movement, rather than the frequently inaccurate, misinformed and biased tabloid scholarship of the conspirators against Zion.
Dispensationalism in its True Light  Jun 7, 2008
For Zion's Sake is an excellent panoramic view of Dispensationalism in light of the Bible and also of the Church's knowledge and understanding of Israel's role and purpose in the unfolding of countless prophecies in our day. This book will also bring to light the inaccurate and misleading views extant to this day as to John Nelson Darby's role in bringing these precious Bible Truths to light at a time when "higher criticism" was blurring the clear teachings from the Bible as to Israel's role in the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His earthly kingdom. I strongly recommend this book to the serious student of the Bible.
