Better writing than Left Behind--Too many dated references  Mar 14, 2005
Jeffrey's plot and pacing match that of the Left Behind series. Where he shines is characterization. I could relate to Daniel, the guy-next-door hero, who stumbles upon eternal truths in through realistic, uncontrived, yet fascinating events. Likewise, the President's assistant is a compelling modern woman, who manages to be "normal", feminine, and yet a true heroine. We grow to like these people, care for them, and thus become engrossed in the story.

An odd factor in Jeffrey's writing--and this shows up in the follow-up novel, Dawn's Early Light, is how romance plays into the story. The love angle builds suspense, takes up a fair amount of pages, and yet ultimately ends up seeming like a factor the author through in because it is supposed to be there.

The key distraction for this story--seven years after the initial publication--is that too much of the material is dated. Basing a novel on Y2K proved a death nail for many novels (check out the reviews of Bob Bridges an Apocalyptic Fable for an example of the merciless ratings such books can receive). Beyond the Y2K element, several world leaders were mentioned, along with reasonable but ultimately erroneous guesses as to how they might play out historically. The story is still compelling, but the danger of a plot heavily based on a current news phenomenon is that once the issue passes, the writing loses its ability to attract.

Bottom-line: Read Dawn's Early Light first. It's written by the same authors and is less dated. If the writing proves compelling, this story is worth reading.
The characters were so realistic, I dreamed about them!  Apr 7, 2001
I, too, have read the LEFT BEHIND series, and thought none other could be so all consuming. But I was transported from the first page and became totally involved with the characters. One night, when I awoke from a dream about the book events,I found that I was praying for the safety of the characters! I would say that WAS involvement. I have watched for additional books. When?
Decent, but far from great  Jan 24, 2001
Flee The Darkness is not a bad novel, but that's about as far as it goes. If, like me, you have a taste for Christian Endtime fiction, you'll probably enjoy this novel. There's nothing wrong with it but, like many other novels in this genre, there's nothing standout about it either. If you're interested in reading a truly exceptional novel about Revelations, I would suggest We All Fall Down by Brian Caldwell. Caldwell uses Revelations, not just to imagine what it might be like, but to truly explore the nature of God an mankind. I read the novel three months ago, and I'm still thinking about it, God and myself. Flee is a good novel, it just doesn't come anywhere close to We All Fall Down.
Simply splendid, refreshing, vibrant, electric, & supersonic  Mar 13, 2000
Only 2 words can describe this book - A triumph of nouns with a graceful multitude of adjectives, verbs, and the occasional splattering of gerunds.
Flee the Darkness  Feb 7, 2000
Having read all the "Left Behind" series up to the most recent one ("Assassins"), I did not expect to find another book that would challenge the amount of enjoyment and encouragement that I received from that series. Much to my delight and pleasure, this book far surpassed that series. It is extremely well written and much more entertaining than any of the "Left Behind" series. I am presently reading the sequel, "By Dawn's Early Light" and find that, it too, is an excellent book. These books are definitely written for believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and who are eagerly awaiting his return. If you enjoyed LaHaye and Jenkins books, you will most certainly enjoy this book.
