Item Description...
"The term born again is very precious and very crucial in the Bible. And our main concern should be to know what God intends when the Bible uses this language, so that by his grace we may experience it and help others do the same. It is of enormous consequence that we know what being born again really means. God is the great Doer in this miracle of the new birth. And he has not been silent about it. This means that he does not want us to be ignorant of what he does in the new birth. It means that knowing what he has revealed about the new birth is good for us. When Jesus said, 'You must be born again,' he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading us to eternal life"--P. [4] of cover.

Publishers Description
When Jesus said to Nicodemus, 'You must be born again', the devout and learned religious leader was unsure what Jesus meant. It would seem nothing has changed. Today 'born again Christians' fill churches that are seen as ineffectual at best, and even characterised by the 'mosaic' generation as 'unchristian'.The term 'born again' has been devalued both in society and in the church. Those claiming to be 'born again' live lives that are indistinguishable from those who don't; they sin the same, embrace injustice the same, covet the same, do almost everything the same.Being 'born again' is now defined by what people say they believe. The New Testament however defines Christians very differently.""When Jesus said to Nicodemus, "You must be born again" (John 3:7), he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading him to eternal life... If he does that for you (or if he already has), then you are (or you will be) truly, invincibly, finally alive."" John Piper

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A tight and timely little number from Piper  Nov 4, 2009
In secular culture the term "born again Christian" is loosely attributed to someone who at least gives lip service to Jesus Christ as their Lord.

However in its original Biblical setting, it goes far deeper than that.

Sadly recent secular surveys in North America have concluded that those labeled "born again Christians" have morality that is just as bad if not worse than the secular world.

In this book Piper unpacks what exactly a "born again Christian" is and in doing so examines this apparent oxymoron.

With his typical thorough biblical exposition Piper opens our eyes to see that the research merely proves not that "born agains" are permeated with worldliness - but rather the church is permeated with people who are not truly born again.

It is a hugely topical message - many church leaders are sadly coming to this realization. This was pretty much at the heart of Tim Keller's book "The Prodigal God" and was also given significance in Mark Driscoll's recent book "Religion Saves" where Jim Packer stressed it was the number one issue for today's churches.

At 202 pages it is not a huge book - however as far as themes go it could best be described as "chunkified" - but don't let this deter you - here is a book that is worthy of your time. In fact I would take it a step further and say I think it is essential for anyone involved in church leadership. We need to understand and to preach faithfully what it means to be "born again" - this is essential.

Using scripture Piper answers the basic questions regarding new birth. What is it? - Why must we be born again? - How does it come about? (from God's point) - What does it look like? (on our part).

I'll be honest - I do not find Piper an easy author to read - although that said this book is a heck of a lot easier to digest than Desiring God - (I think his writing style has matured greatly since then). And I did find the logic flow between some chapters a tad hard to follow - I suspect that is because of what I assume is the length of time over which it was written.

These minor points aside this is a sturdy exposition of what new birth means. It would make a great book to study in a group - a chapter a week or something - Each chapter starts with the relevant scripture and is oozing God's word every where - you can see Piper is desperate that the seriousness of this message is understood.

Give it a read.

One of the most important Christian books you will ever  Sep 28, 2009
First off, I cannot unduly stress the importance of this book to all who call themselves Christians. This will be one of the most important Christian books you will ever read in your lifetime. Also, like some of the previous reviewers have said, this could be Piper's most important book yet.

Now to the review...

The book is essentially about the importance of the new birth and the implications of that new birth in our lives. Too many Christians these days complain that the evangelical church does not focus a lot on social and political matters like poverty, racism, sexism, environmental degradation, economic injustice, etc. that more mainline churches do. However, Piper shows us that many modern Christians have it backwards: in order to fight these social and political evils people must be transformed from within first and how that impacts our lives communally and individually. He then shows us in the rest of the book why people need to be transformed from within by God's grace. The book essentially contains five major sections: 1) What Is The New Birth?; 2) Why Must We Be Born Again?; 3) How Does The New Birth Come About?; 4) What Are The Effects of the New Birth?; and 5) How Can We Help Others Be Born Again?

In the first section, Piper deals with the issue of what being "born again" (the popular evangelical phrase) is. Many evangelicals in recent decades often use this slogan in their preaching and evangelizing without truly knowing what it means in a biblical sense. According to Piper, being "born again" is not about joining the Christian religion (or becoming a member of a church), acknowledging the supernatural, or receiving water baptism (though these are important too). According to Piper, being born again is that through the work of the Holy Spirit and the Father's sovereign grace we are new creations in union with Christ - while saving faith is the instrument that God gives us to unite us to Christ.

In the second section, Piper discusses why we all need to be born again. He shows us that the new birth is necessary in order to enter into the Kingdom of God because we all sinners enslaved by our own sin and Satan. In essence, we are all spiritually dead and have no relational access to God in a positive sense because of our sin. He also talks about why the Second Person of the Trinity became man and died on the cross and what it means to be purified and justified by Christ's blood (Chapter 5).

In the third section, Piper talks about how we are born again in the proper sense. He discusses how this comes about by God's sovereign calling, the washing of regeneration done by the Holy Spirit, by exercising saving faith in Jesus Christ, and by hearing the Good News. What he emphasizes in all four chapters in this section is that all the aspects that bring us to a saving union with Christ is done by God's sovereignty and grace without our merits or religiosity. This section probably makes up the core of the book and pretty much gives you Piper's main point throughout the book.

The fourth section is about the results of the new birth. Here, Piper talks about the necessary effects of being born again. In it he talks about how the new birth overcomes this sinful world (which is an overview of 1 John), how genuine godly love can only come about through regeneration and faith (however, he also emphasizes that we must not equate love with faith, since that undermines assurance of our salvation), how the new birth stops the practice of sinning (though we will never be perfect in this life), and how God's love for us leads us to love others. Too many modern evangelicals today have the idea that just because they call themselves Christians, attend church on a regular basis, and take part in the means of grace that they can just assume that they will enter heaven when this life is over. Piper tells us in this section how fatally flawed that thinking is. Many on the last day will hear the dreadful words from the Lord, "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness" (Matt 7:23, ESV) because they did not truly believe and bring forth the good fruits that follow saving faith (cf. James 2:14-26). Again, Piper points out that being born again has practical implications with eternal consequences.

The last section deals with how we can help other people become born again. Piper's message in this section is pretty straightforward: share the Good News and God will do the rest. Since God ultimately does the saving (making people new creations) all we can do is share the gospel to the lost. This is important to emphasize because many Calvinists (like me) today have this laid back attitude to evangelism thinking that since God ultimately does the saving we can take a minimalist role in evangelism. However, we are not called to just sit and relax on our armchairs but to share the gospel with zeal. God sends us out to open the eyes of the lost so that they can be saved by God's grace.

In conclusion, this book will be one of the most important books you will ever read as a Christian. In fact, I am not exaggerating when I say that this book can even have life and death (eternal) implications. Too many professing Christians today believe they are going to heaven one day because they had some religious experience, got baptized, did some ritual, or were raised in a Christian home. Piper dispels these serious misunderstandings of what a genuine believer is and shows us what it means to be born again, why we need to be born again, how we are born again, and the consequences of being born again. The awful reality is that many churches today are packed with people who have no idea of what it means to be a genuine Christian and what the consequences are of not knowing that important fact.
Piper is at his best!  Jun 13, 2009
Amid the massive confusion--doubtless the consequence of enemy propaganda--John Piper writes with amazing clarity. For anyone who sincerely loves the biblical gospel of Jesus Christ this excellent book will be a source of great joy. For anyone who has no idea what the biblical gospel is, you will not find a better or clearer announcement of it. John Piper is at his best in this much needed publication. --DJB
A Clear Explanation to a Widely Misunderstood Reality  Jun 12, 2009
It's a phrase that has been widely misunderstood for two thousand years, since the first time it was spoken:

"You must be born again."

The new birth, or what theologians call regeneration, is one of the most stunning and crucial realities of the universe, one which every child of God should thoroughlly understand and rejoice in.

But that's not how it is. Most church goers have vague, incomplete answers to such basic questions as:

What is the new birth?
Why must we be born again?
How does the new birth come about?
What are the effects of the new birth?
How can we help others become born again?

Those are the five questions answered by Finally Alive, a book by pastor John Piper that takes a comprehensive look at what it means to be born again. He lays out his goals for the reader:

"When you are truly born again and grow in the grace and knowledge of what the Lord has done for you, your fellowship with God will be sweet, and your assurance that he is your Father will be deep. I want that for you.

If you know what really happened to you in your new birth, you will treasure God and his Spirit and his Son and his word more highly than you ever have. In this, Christ will be glorified.

In the process of believers discovering what really happened to them, the seriousness and the supernatural nature of conversion will rise and that, I pray, will serve a more general awakening of authenticity in the Christian church so that religious hypocrisy will diminish and the world will see real love and sacrifice and courage in the service of Christ."

If you want Bible-saturated, passion-filled answers to what really happened when you became born again, this is your book. It will both inform your mind and ignite your heart in greater love for Jesus and greater desire to see others come to Christ.

Wonderful book  Jun 1, 2009
This is a great book. Its subject matter is not dealt with very many other places, and I really enjoy Piper's writing style. I recommend it without hesitation.
