Shares the intimate experiences of two hospice nurses with their terminally ill patients, offering additional advice on how to respond to the requests of the dying while helping them to prepare for death. Reprint.

Publishers Description
Five years after its first publication, with more than 150,000 copies in print, Final Gifts has become a classic. In this moving and compassionate book, hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years experience tending the terminally ill.
Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts--of wisdom, faith, and love--that the dying leave for the living to share.
Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
I have been dealing with the impending death of a loved one. This book was recommended by a friend. It was a truly wonderful read. Easy to read - easy to understand - and very insightful. Please read this if you have a loved one in the process of dying.
Final Gifts: Wonderful and Helpful!  Mar 8, 2007
This book was so helpful to me in my Mom's final weeks. Not only did it help me understand what she was experiencing, but it gave me an inner peace. I was able to let her go knowing that someday we will be together again. I have no doubt. This is a wonderful read for anyone, but especially for someone experiencing the loss of a loved one.
Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs and Communications of the Dying  Mar 8, 2007
This has been a particularly helpful, informative and comforting book to read during my Mother's illness and recent passing. I am already a faith-filled individual, and I wasn't fearful. But I could see where this book certainly assisted in answering questions. It helped me understand that there is much we can learn from a dying person, if we only allow them to communicate in their own way. I would recommend it to anyone involved with a dying person, or if you are facing imminent passing yourself.
A must read for understanding the dying process  Feb 27, 2007
My Dad just passed away a few weeks ago. My family was very fortunate to have my Dad spend the last two weeks of his life at a wonderful hospice house in Minnesota that has eight rooms that overlook a beautiful lake. As my father was in the active dying process over a 4 day period my family gathered in his room to cherish the last few days we would have with him. My sister found this wonderful book, "Final Gifts," on the bookshelf at the hospice center. We all took turns reading it and absorbing all the incredible information that this books has inside its cover.

It is a must read for anyone who has family members or friends who are ill or dying. We were so blessed to have read this book. It allowed us to look for the signs our father was giving us before he passed away that we would have completely missed or brushed aside had we not be informed by this book.

My father used to love to ride his motorcycle back in the '50's and '60's. The day before he passed away while he lay there with his eyes closed he had his hands raised up in the air as if he were riding his motorcycle. He also talked about "counting passengers," "charging his phone for his journey," and wanted to make sure he knew the correct time to depart. These signs were cherished by each member of my family because we knew he was getting ready to go on an incredible journey.

We loved this book so much that we bought 30 copies in order to donate and pass this wonderful book along to the hospice center where he stayed so they could put a book in each room for incoming families.

An essential read  Feb 20, 2007
Society's obsession with the superficial has so "prettified" the dying process - and usually removed it from any interference with the ongoing life of the principals involved - that this book is a welcome reminder that the dying LIVE until they die. They still have opinions, and even as their ability to "be in control" wanes as their physical selves decline, they deserve to do the dying "their way." They have things to say, but most of the time it requires active listening, and no small amount of interpretation. It requires time just to be with them. This book makes the process reality-based. This is a book written for ordinary people in simple terms with excellent examples. Professionals who have inslated themselves from caring would do well to read this, too.
