Item Description...
In Feeling Like God biblical scholar David Crump investigates what the Bible says about emotion--both God's emotions and human emotions and shows that following Jesus Christ necessarily includes bringing our emotions to God rather than trying to suppress them. An engaging blend of biblical study, personal testimony, and theological reflection, this book challenges us to understand our emotions as something integral to what it means to be created in the image of God.

A God with Emotions?  Aug 5, 2006
We've heard from radio and TV preachers that we need a "personal relationship" with God, but God seems like an abstract concept. Meaningful connection seems impossible. In Crump's book, we glimpse God's emotional responses to human beings through God's words and behaviors as recorded in Scripture. We discover how God can empathize with human experience because God has had joys and sorrows (among other feelings) of his own. Crump's book presents the intriguing possibility that the reader may be known and loved, deeply and completely known and loved, by God. It is worth a read for anyone with spiritual curiosity.
To an emotional, non academic senior citizen, the idea of the God of the Bible being jealous, or angry, or tired has long been distasteful. I read this book as a favor to a friend and then I read it again, journaling my way through it.

Reading Feeling Like God helped me uncover new facets of God--and surprisingly, even new facets of myself. The book has caused me to expect more of God than I ever dared. The author writes in a deep but uncomplicated way, using history, scriptures and his own personal experiences and struggles. Every time I read it I find something new. It does not sit on my shelf, I lend it to unbelievers and old believers alike. It should be on the shelves of every public library.
Excellent! A must read  Jun 26, 2006
I am struck by the originality of Crump's approach.

In Feeling Like God: A Spiritual Journey to Emotional Wholeness, David Crump states his premise "that God is an emotional Being available for personal interaction with each of us." As a result this is a nondenominational read for anyone who calls themselves Christian. He opens with a short Introduction of his teenage bout with atheism. Then chapter one is a discussion of the classical period of the historical differences about whether or not God has emotions.

Crump clarifies (most often with examples of his own failures and successes) how to create a feeling relationship with God. He describes the human community containing a `feeling' God, not a remote distant Holy God, untouchable, to be worshipped at a distance, but a God viably near to us and who understands us because God, too, can feel emotions, such as "anger, desire, ,disappointment, jealousy and weariness"--each of these emotions are treated in chapters two through five. Chapter six sorts out our emotions and God's emotions--are we simply projecting ours onto God? Crump opens this chapter with a vivid description of a woman who had red scars on her wrists from attempts at suicide; she feels that God hates her for her suicide attempts. This chapter clarifies for her that God can understand because he, too, feels.

But Crump has not gone off on his own tangent--his book is heavily researched with supportive evidence from the Bible, classical, and many other sources.

In addition, Crump has an excellent command of the English language. Feeling Like God is easy, easy to read--it simply flows. Having an MA in Literature, I truly appreciate the depth of his perception, his documented research, his unfailing supportive material, his exposure of self drawing us into the narrative as fellow beings with God, and his originality.

A very interesting, original and tantalizing read. I highly recommend Feeling Like God because of its vitality and relevance for the 21st century; it is truly a book for the people: you and I and all the other Christians on the planet.
