Overview
Most people, even Christians, live in a state of semidenial about death. We hesitate to say a dearly loved relative or friend died. We prefer to say she passed away or she went to be with the Lord. Even unbelievers who assume that everyone ends up in Heaven are known to say something such as hes gone to a better place. We, however, do not have to live in ignorance about life after death for either believers or unbelievers. Gods Word, the Bible, tells us everything we need to know. It doesnt tell us everything we might want to know, but it tells us everything God wants us to knowwhich means everything we need to know for our instruction and comfort. And then God has provided ministers to mine His Word for its truths and teach them to the rest of us. Such a man is J. Ligon Duncan, who is both a scholar and a pastor. With a scholars mind and a pastors heart, Dr. Duncan has given to us the excellent book, Fear Not, which covers extensively all aspects of death, including what happens to believers immediately after death, the resurrection, the final judgment and then the eternal state. Along the way, he sheds helpful light on several troublesome passages, especially concerning the final Day of Judgment. This is a book to inform and encourage every Christian. All of us will be edified by its pages. It is my pleasure to commend it to every Christian reader. Jerry Bridges

Fear Not! Death and Afterlife from a Christian Perspective
By Ligon Duncan with J. Nicholas Reid

This book tackles the sometimes-taboo subject of death and the afterlife. It is taboo for a lot of people because death is not something people like to think about, however as Duncan describes:
"every Christian should study death, and every
minister worth his salt wants not only to prepare
you for purpose in this life, but wants to prepare
you for death, as well. The moment of a
Christian's death is his passageway into glory
And so we must be prepared for that moment
Whenever it may come." Pg. 21

Death is the gateway into glory for the Christian, but sadly it is also the gateway to eternal judgment for the unbeliever. This book discusses what will happen at he final judgment. There, Jesus will separate those that have believed with those who have not. The sins of everyone will be laid open, which as Duncan says, "is the one thing that scares believers about the Last Day." (Pg. 70) It is necessary for the sins to be laid out for the unbeliever because there will not be any excuse left in them. Once their sin is laid bare they can only accept their eternal punishment. It is necessary for the sins of the believers to be opened so the full effect of Christ's atonement can be seen. Everyone will see the awesomeness of God's grace and everyone will understand that is was only through the sacrifice of Christ, and not by any work of man, that sinners can be redeemed.

Many have argued that it is unfair that a good God should send people to hell. Duncan rightly points out:

" If you want unfairness, if you want discrimination
I can give you that. That is called heaven by grace.
Heaven by grace is the unfair doctrine imaginable
Sinners deserving condemnation get heaven forever
Because the One who was without sin became sin for
Their reconciliation. That is unfair, but hell is the
Fairest doctrine in the world. In hell, you not only
Get what you want, you get what you deserve." Pg. 39

While the first four chapters of this book deal with the sobering realities of death, Christ return, and the final judgment; it ends with the glorious thought of heaven. Every believer ought to long for heaven. Not just because of the streets of gold or the River of Life, but because; "Heaven is where my Savior is. Heaven is where the One who has saved me and the One in whom I delight dwells." Pg. 88

Misses the Heart Issues, I Think  May 4, 2010
This was a frustrating little book. In theory, the main point is that there is enough information in the Bible for Christians to face death without the fear that unbelievers experience. Which is great. But Duncan organizes his work with chapters about, for example, what Jesus' resurrection was like, and then he only barely ties that to the heart issues that concern someone actually confronting their own mortality (or the mortality of a loved one).

While I didn't notice anything in this book that was contrary to the Bible, I found the citations to Scripture to be inconsistent (when I already agreed with his point, Duncan would give me a string of verses to support himself, but when I was curious about some of his phrasing, I was left without guidance on how to check his foundations). The language is elevated just beyond the point of being conversational, which creates a distance between the writer and the reader that I think is unwise for a book about such a personal and universal concern.

Also, I know this part is my own personal problem, but Duncan uses examples from Scotland for just about all of his points, which makes me think he traveled there and/or studied the place intensely just a short while before writing this book (or giving the sermons that led to this book) - a wider variety of examples would have prevented his clear love for Scotland from coming off as an affectation. Most people won't be bothered by that, though, and I suspect that they will see this work as a little too dense to be really pastoral, but a little too brief to be really academic, and ultimately not comforting except to those of us who come to it without need of comfort. I don't know of a great alternative work, but I would not recommend this book to someone struggling with the issues it presents.

A Pastoral Gem!  May 1, 2010
This is a great little book. At only 85 pages this should take you an hour to read - but it will be a profitable hour. Despite it's size, this packs a heavy punch theologically, giving the reader a straight forward, and yet in-depth, biblical understanding, of death, what happens when we die, what happens at the resurrection, what happens at the final judgement and what happens in heaven.

This book should be bought in bulk by pastors so that they can always have a copy handy to give to parishioners who are facing illness, or have family facing illness. We need to be confronted with a biblical theology of death and this does it. Highly Recommended.
