Reviews - What do our customers think?
The lead theme, that fatherlessness is caused by male irresponsibility, is a statistical lie  May 8, 2008
I have been very active in social policy since 1998. I worked with then-Gov. John Ashcroft, Chair of H.W. Bush's President's Commission on American Urban Families, which issued a compelling report titled "Families First" in December, 1991. Blankenhorn was Ashcroft's right-hand man writing that report. I sent him a number of documents and had many phone conversations with him. It appeared pretty clear that he understood that fatherlessness was largely caused by the rise of the entitled illegitimacy-governmental complex, and the corresponding undercutting of the marriage market by federal funding (among other underlaying political factors such as feminism).

When "Fatherless America" came out in March of 1995, I was shocked. On page 22, Blankenhorn makes a vastly dangerous statement: "Today, the principle cause of fatherlessness is paternal choice". This is one of the major claims made for which no cite was given in the book, because no credible citation to support the claim exists. The organization I was president of at the time is cited in FN 48 of the book, in which Blankenhorn makes statements that are polar misrepresentations of my group.

Blankenhorn was a major mover and shaker in Congress and both political parties in those days. His false claim laying the blame for the nations problems at the feet of "irresponsible fathers" -- which was widely disseminated -- sent Congress on a tizzy building a bigger and crueler child-support state when "welfare reform" was enacted. Today, illegitimacy rates are far higher than before welfare reform and are at record levels. Marriage rates are down, and shacking up is exploding.

To this day, Blankenhorn has refused to retract or correct this flawed thinking in the revised version of the book -- despite tremendous pressure from myself and a good number of well-placed academics.

There are many other glib conflations of social statistics and other issues in this book.

Blankenhorn is currently attempting to continue dominance of the government-welfare complex -- but now under the guise of leading the "marriage movement". He has plenty of lovely things to say about marriage, but in the end his answers inexplicably lead towards building a bigger welfare state at the continued destruction the marriage.

Another major correction to Blankenhorn's theories I brought forth to set our sights in productive policy directions: "Marriage-absence is the greatest social problem we face". This drives poverty for women and children, lack of healthcare insurance, personal bankruptcy, social and educational problems for children, the bulk of crime and child support problems, and is creating a nation of aimless boys not going to college and who cannot be counted on to support families and perhaps protect this country. The future of any country that prevents or discourages investment male energy in providing for family and protecting it, via the institution of marriage, is a nation in unequivocal decline.

While some aspects of "Fatherless America" are worthwhile, the guidance provided leads in all the wrong directions. At best it may be useful doing a post-mortem on the failure of welfare reform, and the continued political avoidance of both parties to address the problems with clear vision based on credible science.

Dr. Stephen Baskerville's book Taken into Custody: The War Against Fatherhood, Marriage, and the Family provides a far more accurate and detailed analysis of federal mishandling of spending and policy continues driving our most serious social problems. For the record, I am also cited in the foreward of Baskerville's book.

basically wrong  Nov 11, 2007
Despite the impressive statistics and recognition of a very real problem, Blankenhorn has always had difficulty coming to grips with the cause of the problem and supports government responses that make the problem worse. His social philosophy on marriage and family is consistent with extreme feminists who's primary aim is to put men in the role they've complained women have been in. His actual political philosophy, in evidence from years of political involvement in the subject, has transformed marriage and family into a government program that can be arbitrarily manipulated to achieve the social vision. After being intimately involved in creating the problem, he's now trying to council us on its solution; in what amounts to nothing more than a lengthy exercise in blaming everyone else.
Convincing   Jul 9, 2007
For those people who believe in America as the heart and hope of the free world, and the major bastion of Mankind against totalitarian terror and tyranny this book will be a difficult read. For what it says , and I think it says something which has been no secret for some time now, is that American society is in trouble- and this because the American family is in trouble. The major source of that trouble is according to David Blankenhorm the increased absence of the 'good family man' father. He presents a wide - variety of data showing that children raised in fatherless homes suffer from a wide variety of social pathologies in rates well- beyond those who come from stable two- parent homes. He examines in detail different kinds of fathers who fall short of fulfilling the traditional family building and supporting role. He indicates that a whole ideology has been wrongly built up in recent years around the idea that a single- mother alone can do for her children a mother and father taken together can do. He faults Radical Feminism for promoting an idea which above all has hurt younger generations of Americans.
This work is not simply a plea for the restoration of stable two- parent homes in which a responsible father plays a central part it is in essence a call for a society which is fairer and more supportive of its children.
Wish My Father Would Read This  Jan 25, 2007
Wouldn't do any good. He didn't have a father either. Cycle ends with me.
Fatherless Children and the Social Choas  Nov 16, 2006
The divorce and adultery culture of North America has spawned social chaos that is reflected in numerous statistical research. While the women's movement has been tremendous it has also been used to support the annihilation of the importance of a father. This argument is not just a platform for conservative politics, it is about a real social condition that had reached epic proportions. The rise in fatherless children has probably added to an increase in delinquent behavior, social manners going out the window, women being preyed upon for exploitation, fatherless boys with heightened aggression, this is not good for all of us. A must read on why the family IS important no matter who you vote for.
