Hearing strange things over his CB radio, long-haul driver Kurt Marlowe winds up having breakfast at a truck stop with a young woman who possesses a stunning catfish tattoo on her arm containing bizarrely significant numbers. Original.

Publishers Description

Four lost souls on a collision course with either disaster or redemption. A random community of Faces in the Fire.

Meet Kurt, a truck-driver-turned-sculptor with no memory of his past. Corinne, an e-mail spammer whose lymphoma isn't responding to treatment. Grace, a tattoo artist with an invented existence and a taste for heroin. And Stan, a reluctant hit man haunted by his terrifying gift for killing.

They don't know each other, at least not yet. But something--or someone--is at work in the fabric of their lives, weaving them all together. A catfish, a series of numbers scribbled on a napkin, a devastating fire, and something mysterious. Something that could send them hurtling down the highway to disaster--or down the road to redemption. But they won't know which is which until they've managed to say yes to the whispers in their souls.

Spine Tingling....Great Read  Apr 6, 2010

If you are looking for a book that will give you goose bumps...this is the story for you. I could not put the book down. Each chapter (or two) is focused on a different character. Eventually all the chapters come together in the end and you will understand the significance of everything you just read. It is one of those books that when you are done...You say "Oh!!! Ok, I Get it!! as you work all the puzzle pieces in your mind. It finally clicks that everything you read was interlaced and interwoven. A dynamic story. T.L. Hines is a story teller that will leave your craving more.

After reading about each of the characters I wanted to know what else happened in their lives, how did it turn out? Yet, in my heart... I knew their lives were better and more fulfilling after their interactions.

The story begins with Kurt a truck driver with Amnesia. Absolutely no memory of anything but the uncanny ability to hear dead voices. Say What?? Yep...he can hear the cries and pleas from the beyond but he doesn't really do anything about it. They just inspire him to create art. It is ultimately his story and the other characters, Corinne, Grace and Stan, add to the mix of his memories and lack thereof.

If you like books that provide you the spine-tingling sensation of the unknown with out the demons and devils...suspense with out the gore or the unusual without the macabre then you'll want to pick up a copy of Faces in the Fire. If you are anything like me...once you pick it up you will not want to put it down...until it is finished...and then only reluctantly.
Hidden Meaning  Apr 5, 2010
Review for Fiction Addict dot com.

On page 285 of Faces in the Fire, readers will finally come to chapter one. This is important because the final chapter will have already been read back on page 78. While this might sound like a lawsuit against the printing press just waiting to happen, it is in fact the deliberate and brilliant mix-up that author T.L. Hines intended.

Faces in the Fire is a difficult book to describe. At a basic level, it is the story of four characters whose lives are mysteriously connected by a ten-digit number:1595544534. Kurt is a sculptor with the odd ability to hear ghostly voices from articles of clothing. Corrine is a professional email spammer suffering from lymphoma. Grace is a tattoo artist whose arm itches for another shot of heroin. And Stan is a hit man with a gift for killing that he can't escape.

These characters are unique and richly crafted. As the title implies, they are people who find themselves facing the fire; their stories of pain and their journeys to redemption are beautiful, mesmerizing and inspiring. And Hines writes them with an easy-to-read style that dances between off-kilter humor, insightful ponderings, and fresh plays on words that make for a nice sort of poetry in the prose.

That being said, this is a complex book that requires a patient reader to see it through to the end. Most of the suspense arises from a curiosity to know what in the world is going on. Mysteries and oddities are all over the place, some of which are never completely answered. Or maybe they are. It all depends on what you think the book ultimately means and what the mysterious numbers represent. To each of the four main characters, those ten digits are something different, something unexplainable, but ultimately magical.

I don't think it's any mistake that those numbers are hidden in the novel's ISBN number. They are a good metaphor for the book as a whole. This story will mean something different to each reader. Those who are willing to trust Hines to guide them through the puzzling pages will close the book with the feeling that they have been shown something for which there is no easy explanation--something that is beyond the barriers of what we can understand.

Faces in the Fire is a daring and expertly crafted novel. It is a puzzle. It is a mystery. It is a memorable story that defies simple description and refuses to be placed in a genre box.
Deal Breaker  Jan 23, 2010
I tried and tried to get into this book after I requested a copy. Just couldn't. I found the chapter sequencing odd and disconcerting. Faces In The Fire begins with chapter 34 and ends with 14 and 1 is in the middle??? I'm not familiar with "noir bizarre," and I guess it's not for me.

I was so excited to try this because I love supernatural, mysterious mysteries, but this one could not catch or keep my attention. The story and character development promised was not there for me. Took me months to plow through enough to come up with an assessment, threatening my participating in the Vine program. Writing books is hard work, getting them published even harder. Consequently, even if I don't enjoy a book, I try to find something in my reviews that might signal its interest for another reader. Tough here: All I can say is if you like uniquely odd sequencing in a noir treatment, you might enjoy it. Might.

Overall, the cover and publisher's comments were intriguing, but the prose did not engage me and the odd sequencing of the book was a deal-breaker.
A new fan of T.L. Hines  Jan 21, 2010
This is the first book I've read by this author and I was very impressed. I won't go into great detail about the plot and characters because I think that's already been done to death. When I read a review I don't want a complete summerization of the story and characters etc. These are things I prefer to discover on my own. There have been many comments concerning the chapter numbering both pro and con. I actually liked it. First of all it told me that this book was a little different. Also it makes you realize pretty quickly how past acts influence the future. I will say no more and hope you discover this gem for yourself. The following are points I feel a review should cover.
#1 Would I would recommend to a friend, Yes.
#2 Did I enjoy every minute, Yes.
#3 Could I put it down, No
#4 Will I read future work from this author, Yes
Faces in The Fire - All Over The Place but I love it  Jan 19, 2010
Are you fan of Lost? Did you ever see the movie Memento? Then you are going to love this book. Faces in the Fire starts off with Chapter 34 and jumps around from there. Chapter 1 is somewhere in the middle of the book. The book is in four parts with each part following a different character.

The stories of four uncommon people - truck driver and sculptor with no memories beyond the past six months, a notorious spammer with terminal cancer, a tattoo artist/heroine addict, and a hit man with the world's most bizarre weapon - cross paths, guided by unexplained visions of catfish and seemingly random numbers (which also is the ISBN number). T.L. Hines does an awesome job of keeping all in order.

I liked it so much I plan on going back and rereading so I can catch all the little nuisances of the book. I was searching and saw T.L. Hines is on twitter. Also I see he has other books out so those are going on my list of books to buy. T.L. Hines is my new favorite author.
