Item Description...
Overview
Modern historical study of the Gospels seems to give us a new portrait of Jesus every spring--just in time for Easter. The more unusual the portrait, the more it departs from the traditional view of Jesus, the more attention it gets in the popular media.

Why are scholars so prone to fabricate a new Jesus? Why is the public so eager to accept such claims without question? What methods and assumptions predispose scholars to distort the record? Is there a more sober approach to finding the real Jesus?

Publishers Description
Modern historical study of the Gospels seems to give us a new portrait of Jesus every spring--just in time for Easter. The more unusual the portrait, the more it departs from the traditional view of Jesus, the more attention it gets in the popular media. Why are scholars so prone to fabricate a new Jesus? Why is the public so eager to accept such claims without question? What methods and assumptions predispose scholars to distort the record? Is there a more sober approach to finding the real Jesus? Commenting on such recent releases as Bart Ehrman'sMisquoting Jesus, James Tabor's The Jesus Dynasty, Michael Baigent's The Jesus Papers and the Gospel of Judas, for which he served as an advisory board member to the National Geographic Society, Craig Evans offers a sane approach to examining the sources for understanding the historical Jesus.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Propaganda?  Jul 12, 2008
This attempt to debunk was as biased as the scholars debunked! Plus, very superficial review of the theories of those who question Jesus' presentation by the Church and as a divine being. Proganda from the Church.

Good Popular Level Discussion of Theories on Jesus.  Mar 20, 2008
Craig Evans is a reputable scholar with endorsements from both conservatives and liberals alike. He is a Christian who appears to have moderate to somewhat conservative leanings (theologically). This was my first book by this particular author and I found it to be a good popular level discussion against numerous radical or in some cases downright fraudulant theories about Jesus.
The book opens with some rather interesting pages on the author's background and those of several other scholars. Topics covered include Gnostic Gospels, Earhman's textual criticisms, beliefs Christ was a Cynic, modern popular conspiracy books ("Holy Blood, Holy Grail", etc.),some of James Tabor's theories, and the Gospel of Judas. Evans held my attention and the chapter on the Jewish historians was particullary interesting as were Evans's opinions regarding the Gospel of Thomas.
Overall, the book was enjoyable, informative, and a fairly fast read. I recommend it to anyone looking for a popular level discussion of early Christianity.

Disappointing  Feb 8, 2008
Although purportedly a book of scholarship, it is not. The author criticizes alternative theories of Jesus from the presupposition that his own understanding of Jesus is the only valid one. He does not attempt to justify his own position, simply assumes to be a defender of the "real' Jesus, while supporting orthodox Christian doctrine at the same time. He is oblivious to the obvious truth that the intellectual bankruptcy of conventional Christian doctrine leads people to search for new explanations of Jesus. Those who share his preconceptions will enjoy this read. Others will not.

Fabricating Jesus  Dec 14, 2007
One of the best researched, well written, profound, enlightening, timely and relevant books that I have read on this subject. A must read for anyone that wishes to know the "truth".

Against the Jesus Seminar  Dec 13, 2007
I'm a student at the Univ. of Minnesota and one of my professors is a fellow of the Jesus Seminar. Although I think he's a great guy and all that, I think a lot of the ideas he passes on to us from the Seminar are incorrect. Evans' work here is fantastic in many areas. The two that stand out most to me are 1)The proof that "Son of God" actually meant something- It was an expected Messianic title and 2)Exposing the horrible fraud that is the Secret Gospel of Mark, which one of my textbooks for class claims is authentic. Sorry, Funk, Miller, etc.... that's dishonest guys.

There are other great things in this book and only in rare places do I take issue with what Evans has to say. All in all a fantastic book- one of the best on the subject I'm sure, and it lets people in on what are some of the key tenets of scholarship.
