This is the must have commenary for Ezekiel!  Apr 19, 2006
I am just beginning an adult Bible study on the book of Ezekiel. I ordered 10 different commentaries on this book. Most were quite disappointing and ripped from Ezekiel's historical context. Hummel's treatment is respectful, masterfully written, and a delight to read and digest. This is a commentary that Lutheran and non-Lutheran Christians can appreciate and -- most importantly -- can learn from. Dr. Hummel has done a great service for the Church and her Lord in bringing so much into one volume. If you're leading a Bible study on Ezekiel you can't miss this opportunity to get Ezekiel right.
Ezekiel 1 - 20  Dec 5, 2005
What rodboomboom said and more. I place this tomb in the top 3 of the CPH Commentary Series to date. I would also mention that it is not so much "Lutheran" as a most scholarly commentary on Ezekiel that any Christian would profit from especially those who may have the wrong end of the stick. I have been under the weather and despite that fact I found it hard to put down! Also, one need not be a bibilical Hebrew scholar to appreciate this work. If you happen to be Lutheran of the Missouri kind and don't want to read it, perhaps you would be so kind and make a gift of it to a seminarian or perhaps your own pastor.
Long Awaited Commentary by OT Scholar  Oct 24, 2005
Dr. Hummel was easily one of the most influential Christians this reviewer has ever been around. Having him in class was for me like sitting at the feet of Jesus, well maybe just a bit more eccentric and longwinded than our Lord, but most knowledgeable about God's Word and concerned with righting the wrong thereof.

We have long waited for published commentary from this renown OT scholar. Ezekiel seems the perfect fit, as Hummel bemoans lack of Lutheran interest in priestly, liturgical prophet such as this.

Reading this first installment of Ezekiel returns one to classic Dr. Hummel: Christolocial, historical, typological, liturgical, priestly. His definitive focus on "sacramental" unity between two testaments and hereby expounded in Ezekiel highlights Law and Gospel means of grace orientation in OT land, temple and sacrifices.

His unique treatment of judgment oracles as indicting Law in all severity truly make way for sweetness of the Gospel. Chapter 16 being the longest of these sections with the classic Ezekiel impact of an abandoned girl representing Jerusalem who is dearly loved and wedded, then returns such grace with infidelity. First judgment, but ultimately "chesed of covenant loyalty," i.e. "when I make atonement for you for all you have done."

Can't wait to dig into these riches for Christ in this rich and eccentric prophet's ministry for Bible Study helps and well as homoletic resources. Well seasoned with careful bibliography, notations, pointed comments, and Christ everywhere and Him crucified.

May many turn to this to make Dr. Hummel's passion come alive, many seeking and finding Christ on pages of this magnificent prophet pointed forward to the True Prophet.
