Item Description...
The guide that shows you what other travel books only tell you!

Flanked by Africa, Asia, and Europe, the Holy Land encompasses Israel, Palestine, and parts of Jordan and Egypt. Jerusalem is the walled city at its center divided into three parts: Modern Jerusalem, The Mount of Olives and Mount Zion, and the Old City -- the Old City is made up of the Jewish Quarter, the Muslim Quarter, the Christian Quarter, and the Armenian Quarter. Experience the Western Wall, Hurva Square, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and many other important sites. With more than 800 full-color photographs and detailed street-by-street maps DK's Eyewitness Guide: Jerusalem and the Holy Land details the history and beauty of this land from the Sea of Galilee to the Negev Desert. Whether you're visiting St. Catherine's Monastery or exploring the coral reefs in the Red Sea, this one guide is the only reference you will ever need.

Dissapointing, overpolitical, lack of respect/understanding of the country  Jun 4, 2008
I love and live by Eyewitness Guides when I travel and expected the same professionalism, neutrality, and respect found in other guides. This book was not only a disappointment on all of the above, but managed to offend me, and the others I shared the book with.

Right from the start it is obvious that the writers took shortcuts in explanations, proper research and their view of "history." The book is almost a guide to Israel for people who are not the least bit interested in ISRAELI and JEWISH culture but are visiting purely for "history" of the region. The events are misreferenced and overly opinionated, incorrectly identifying battles that were "initiated" by the Jews when they were in fact, not. There were so many misconceptions and what's worse is the authors felt the need to make their opinion clear. The authors use words like "stole" and other strong words to indicate supposed injustices, but fail to attribute the problems or injustices to the other side, as appropriate. It is completely unbalanced, and worse--inaccurate!

I should have known better based on the title "The Holy Land". The authors made a very conscious choice to not title it it's true name: Israel and instead, write as though Israel is simply some ornamentally Jewish state but one which--more importantly--contains important religious sights, as if that is the ONLY reason to go. This may of course be true for many, but for those of us who travel to a region not only for the historical significance, or beauty, it is also to get to know another culture as it exists. The fact that Eyewitness encourages judgment of such a people is simply wrong and misguided. No matter how you feel about the politics in this region, there is no denying that Israel served as a haven for Jews escaping one of the worst atrocities this world has seen, and that must be taken into consideration. The authors should at least provide both sides, if they feel they must proselytize, and allow the reader to form her own opinion.

My advice to the authors--go back to Israel and look at through the view of its people, its traditions, its culture, and its advances, rather than through hostile, unempathetic, and judgemental political eyes.

Out of all the books (many) I have ordered from this site, I have never been moved to write a review until now. But I hope people take the time to explore other resources and--if they do purchase this book--view it with a skeptical eye and make their own conclusions based on fact, not emotion.

Shame on you Eyewitness!!
Too Early for review  Jun 7, 2007
I will tell you more about this book once I am back from the holy land
Great guide  Jun 1, 2007
I bought this book for my dad for Christmas because he was planning on going to Israel for a week. He's a "planner" type, and had already made himself a complete itinerary. After reading it, he changed his whole itinerary! He just got back from his trip, and said that this book had been extremely helpful. One bit of advise, he said that to go to some of the places, you either need to go with a tour group, or hire a personal guide for the day. He opted for the second option and was able to see more than most people can accomplish in a week.
Best book of this type I have read  May 15, 2007
Very thorough, well organized, easy to read, good pictures. I recommend it completely.
Excellent resource!  Apr 10, 2007
We just returned from our first trip to the Holy Land. We had many other resource aides, as did other people. This was a book that was very easy to use, very inclusive for information, and many people were borrowing it to use during our 2 week visit. We left the other resources at the hotel and just used this one. It was fairly lightweight and a convenient size. I would highly recommend this book for home use or as a resource for a trip to the Holy Land.
