Review: The Expanded Bible (New Testament)  Feb 4, 2010
The Expanded Bible is a modified version of the New Century Version, functional-equivalent based translation, and a product of Tremper Longman III, Mark L. Strauss and Daniel Taylor. What's interesting is that this New Testament incorporates alternative translations, literal meaning,s traditional wordings, commentaries, textual variants and references directly in the main text. Yes, you are reading correctly. They are all in the main text rather than the footnotes. The scriptures are bolded, so you wouldn't need to worry about mixing up the texts and the additional information.

And since I do not already own a hardcopy NCV, I certainly enjoy adding it to my library for references but I doubt I will use it for primary reading. This is because I find it easy to loose focus on the context of the passages due to its presentation format. Or perhaps it is just my unfamiliarity with NCV! At any rate, if you are looking for alternative bibles, this is something you may like to try out. But if you are tight on budget, I will suggest you get something more "traditional". :)

This review is part of Thomas Nelson's Book Review Blogger Program, of which I have received a free review copy.
The Expanded Bible  Feb 2, 2010
As we all know, there are so many different varieties of bibles to choose from on the market today. My last experience shopping for bibles was exhausting and confusing at best. Because I am trying to understand the bible better I was excited to receive this version. It is described as having study aids right there in line with the text so that you can study this bible while you read. As I opened this bible I noticed that it was FULL of information, much more than I expected. In fact, this bible someone found its way to Iraq with my husband so I no longer have it in my possession. This would be a fabulous purchase for anyone wanting to dive deeper into scripture. There is much explanation throughout that helps to provide better understanding of biblical text.

Because this is more of a reference bible, it not probably one the bible that I would carry to church or bible studies. It is only the new testement version and it would be really nice to have it in both the old and new testement if that was possible.

The Expanded Bible: New Testement is a wonderful resource to have in your home library. It is worth purchasing.
Great Study Resource  Feb 1, 2010
I decided to read the entire New Testament in the month of September, so I was excited to see this new Expanded Bible available as part of the Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers program. Much to my dismay, this is not a bible you would want to use when reading through the New Testament in a month. So while I read through The Message, I utilized The Expanded Bible as a reference, and for that it was great.

Based on the New Century Version, The Expanded Bible: New Testament reads exactly like The Amplified Bible by "expanding" the meaning of certain key words and offering alternatives. However, different in this bible is that the expanded text lies right in-line with the text. The original text is in bold, and the expanded meanings are in brackets in a standard weight. Another very helpful addition to this bible is the topic notes on the sidebars with text references for other places you can find that subject in the New Testament.

While I would never use this to read lengthy text, it's a great resource for use in studying the bible, and a happy addition to my bookshelf!

*Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their [...] book review bloggers program.
Good Translation but Difficult to Read  Jan 16, 2010
The Expanded Bible: New Testament is the latest attempt by Christian book publishers to make the Bible more accessible for people to study. Based on the New Century Version, The Expanded Bible is a functional-equivalent translation, emphasizing on readability over a more literal translation. This version is helped by the big name scholars they enlisted: Tremper Longman III, Mark L. Strauss, and Daniel Taylor. Translation aside, this Bible's most notable feature is the formatting of the text.

Instead of placing alternate translations and cross references below and to the side of the biblical text, this version puts the notes inline with the biblical text (similar to the Amplified Bible). The biblical text is bold, with [explanations in brackets], and a host of additional letters signifying the type of explanation: "or" for alternate readings, "L" for what the Greek literally says, and "T" for traditional (KJV) readings.

I found it difficult to read through a passage with this Bible. While I appreciate the "outside the box" thinking by the publisher in trying to reformat the standard Study Bible format, by doing so they lose all readability of the text. If you are looking for a Bible for study or devotions, I would recommend other Bibles before The Expanded Bible.

Great Content - Poorly Laid Out  Jan 12, 2010
I recently received a copy of The [expanded] Bible for my review. I found the cover to be attractive and simple. I would dare compare it to an amplified bible, but it seems to bit more than that in certain areas, albeit difficult to find at first. This Bible was worked on by Tremper Longman III (Yale), Mark L. Strauss (Bethel Seminary), and Daniel Taylor (Emory).

This edition of the Bible as paraphrased on page xii serves to provide a more literal meaning of the original text, provide a traditional meaning of the passages, and briefly comment on historical/cultural/theological renderings from past translations. I think on this note this edition does deliver, if you are not distracted by the extra words.

At times, I found the extra comments to be a little much for me (even as a fan of The Amplified Bible). I guess I really wanted this New Testament to be more than it was meant to be. It looks like a devotional New Testament, but it reads like a complicated "commentary-like" bible.

I would like to a couple things to improve the next version. First off, the font is simply too difficult to read. There really needs to be some spacing happening in the text. The text begins to run together for me. I wonder if they could just put the bible text and then the next place put the chapter comments. Secondly, I really believe that an Old Testament should have been included, as there are many references to it (who wants to carry 2 bibles to study?).

All in all, I think this is a great work by these three professors, but somewhere along the publishing line, I think someone forgot to ask the consumer if they would actually purchase it with it's confusing readability.
