Publishers Description

“Mommy, I can’t wait until Christmas!” Claire squealed as she did a cartwheel.

“I know, Claire,” Mommy said. “You only have to wait a few more days.”

“How many days till Christmas?” Claire’s little brother, Camden, asked.

Mommy laughed. “Only five more! While we wait let’s talk about why we have Christmas.”

“Oh, I know,” Claire said quickly. “That’s when Jesus was born!”

“That’s right!” Mommy answered. “Christmas should remind us of God’s gift to all the world—his Son Jesus. God said that when Jesus grew up he would ‘save his people from their sins’” (Matthew 1:21).

“What does that mean, Mommy?” Camden wondered.

“Sins are the wrong things that we say and do. Things like disobeying your daddy and me, fighting with each other, or telling lies. The Bible, God’s special book, says that ‘all have sinned’ (Romans 3:23)—children and adults too.

“When you do something wrong at home or school, you know you’re in trouble when you get caught. God knows all about us and knows every time we sin. And our sins get us into trouble with God! That’s why he sent Jesus to be born here on earth.

Jesus never sinned, and when he became a grown man, he chose to be punished for our sins, so we wouldn’t have to be. He died on the cross to save us from our sins, just like the Bible says. Then Jesus came back to life.”

“Jesus must really love us to die for us!” Claire exclaimed.

“That’s right,” Mommy replied. “He did it so we can have a very special gift. The Bible says ‘the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord’ (Romans 6:23). Eternal life means living with Jesus and God in heaven forever and ever!”

“How can we get the gift, Mommy?” Claire asked.

“The Bible says that ‘God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16). If you believe with all your heart God sent Jesus to die for you and that you want Jesus to forgive your sins, you can tell God with a prayer like this:

Dear God, I believe that Jesus died because of my sins. I am trusting you to forgive my sins. I want to live in heaven with you forever. Thank you!”

Just like Claire and Camden, you can have your sins forgiven and receive the gift of eternal life. Christmas may be days away, but you can have God’s greatest gift right now!

One of my All Time Favorite Commentaries - Deserves 10 Stars  Oct 30, 2006
I love this book, it is truly a classic. Preaching doesn't get any better than this. I have read all 1,164 pages (except for the index) and used several red pencils to mark and annotate what I liked.

Ryken tells a story, while many commentaries just tell you facts. It seems every chapter points to Christ and applies to Christians. This book is loaded with details and facts, but what makes it great is the application to our lives and the glory that is given to Jesus in every chapter. Ryken doesn't go far without relating it to Jesus. It all comes back to Jesus. No wonder it is easy to enjoy. I have noticed a pattern in many chapters 1) first he explains the story of Exodus in its current setting, 2) next he shows how it points to Jesus, 3) then he shows how it applies to us as Christians, 4) and finally he often shows the future aspects and how it relates to the end times and heaven. What a great pattern for preaching and teaching. You cannot get bored when you do that. This pattern is not obvious at first, but by the middle of the book you know it is going to point to Jesus. You don't know how it will point to Jesus, but you can be sure it will. There are gems in here waiting to be discovered.

The book is loaded with numerous cross-references to the rest of the Bible. They are very helpful and add depth to the study. I have learned a lot about other parts of the Bible as well, such as Hebrews, 2 Corinthians, and Revelation. Actually, there is hardly a book of the Bible he has not touched on. Even Jonah quotes from the book of Exodus, when he says - "for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness".

We are all familiar with parts and pieces of the book of Exodus, but Philip Ryken has given Exodus a unity and flow from beginning to end. And now it all makes sense to me. There are pictures of our salvation in Exodus that I never saw nor appreciated before. He has a great ability to make it one great story from beginning to end.

If you have never taught or preached on Exodus, I believe you will after reading this.

I am using this book to teach an adult Sunday School Class. I have other great commentaries on Exodus, but I always read Ryken first. After that, there is no need to read anything else. He has given me so much that there is no need to look at the other books. I still spend a lot of time with the book of Exodus itself and try to make the lesson my own, but Ryken has been a tremendous help. He is a great teacher and communicator.

I stumbled across this book in the book store and had never heard of Philip Ryken - shame on me. Man was I pleasantly surprised. I loved the work by James M. Boice, and I was not sure any one could measure up to him. But I can honestly tell you that if you liked Boice you will love Ryken.
It is worth the price  Jul 23, 2006
A very good commentary on Exodus. Has good spiritual insight with some practicality. I would order again. I recommend. Not too technical. I would hardly give anything 5 stars.
