Overview
When Jesus died on the cross, it seemed that all had been lost. Death had won. But after three days in a rich man's tomb, Jesus appeared?alive! The news was so shocking that His followers refused to believe it until they saw Him with their own eyes and touched His wounds with their own hands. Then Jesus made an amazing claim: In the future, they too would have resurrected bodies like His, bodies that would never deteriorate, age or perish. They would have new life without death or pain in the presence of a loving God forever. But can we really believe His promise? For that matter, can we really believe that the promise was made by a Man who rose from the dead? In this fascinating look at the claims of the Gospel writers and 2,000 years of believing Christians, bestselling author Josh McDowell and his son Sean examine the compelling evidence and conclude that Jesus Christ conquered death and the gravel in clear, concise and accessible chapters, Josh and Sean present the fact s about the resurrection and what it means for readers today.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Misleading Title  Oct 2, 2009
I concur with another review. The title of this book is misleading. Most of the book builds the Biblical reason for needing Jesus. Which is great! But less than 1/4th is devoted to actual evidence of the resurrection.

I should of read some of this book before buying it. I already know why I need Jesus. Instead I wanted some academic reasons to prove the resurrection. What I got is a evangelistic book that shows why people need Jesus.

This book should be titled, "Why You Need Jesus."

Well said  Apr 19, 2009
This book makes it clear how one accepts God greatest gift, Jesus Christ as Savior. A good read for a new Christian or for someone searching for meaning in his/her life.

Not Up for the Challenge  Feb 17, 2009
Sad to say, in spite of Lucy's rather inane prose in the last review, the poor little fellow has a point. The title for this book ought to have actually been, "Evidence for What Happens When Some People Believe in the Resurrection" -- because indeed, the McDowells spend far more time on the "fringe benefits" of belief in the Resurrection than they do on the Resurrection as a historical event

The McDowells may not have chosen the title (usually, publishers do that), but whoever did choose it, it is inappropriate. Only one chapter truly is about "evidence for the Resurrection." There are also chapters about such things as historical knowledge and miracles, which are not specific to the Resurrection (though I am glad they are there). Most of the rest of the book is essentially an extended personal testimony feature, explaining why the Resurrection (assuming it happened) gives your life meaning and purpose, and shows just how much God (sentimentally) loves you. Nice. But it isn't "evidence for the Resurrection," not one bit of it.

The irony here is that the McDowells are taking this approach out of what is likely a perceived necessity. The selfish, "me me" generation -- which they recognize as a serious problem -- doesn't want to hear about history; they want to hear about what's in it for me -- er, them. Not that this approach is surprising. As when I interviewed him years ago, Josh McDowell remains convinced that personal testimony and experience is what converts people, as it did him. In contrast, Sean seems to have a much more realistic and practical perspective in the sections of the book he wrote, placing more emphasis on the Resurrection as a historical fact. I am wondering if we have him to thank for whatever depth this book has, which is still not very much. You won't see anything here to seriously prepare anyone for such challenges as The Empty Tomb and Carrier's two-body hypothesis, or even the "copycat savior" thesis. It is as though we're still dealing with objections dealt in the 1950s.

I would say that the utility of this book will be extremely limited -- perhaps to youth -- and may even do more harm than good without a following program of discipleship; otherwise, those who read it will continue to think "God did it for me, me, me" is the best part of the whole scheme. Yes, I'm happy to see this coming out of part of a special project by McDowell's ministry to teach in churches about the Resurrection; but I am also filled with dread at knowing that so many -- as happened with Evidence That Demands A Verdict -- will think they're getting the final word from McDowell, and will find themselves in a mental jam when someone pops modern critical arguments into the picture.

I really wish the McDowells had done a better job, but that will apparently have to be done by someone else.

He is risen! You, too, maybe!  Jan 18, 2009
This compassionate Father-Son team feels your pain: "While some of us may have more pains and regrets than others, none of us can escape the inevitable wounding and scarring life on this planet is sure to bring. Even the Earth feels the excruciating pain of trouble ... it groans ... all this pain, heartache ... all the pain and ruin we see and experience .... all the pain, tragedy and death that dogs us so relentlessly. The pain, tragedy and death that wreak havoc upon us ... death, pain, and sickness."

I draw those few examples from a single paragraph, p. 18, but similar notes of sympathy appear throughout the book, on nearly every page. Josh and Sean McDowell know exactly how you feel, if you're a Christian who suffers from earthly existence.

But there is hope.

"Pantheists" say that "Life's a [female dog], and then you die." The McDowells don't say that. The McDowells say: Life's a [female dog], but when it is finally over, you can go to Heaven, and won't THAT be nice!!

(If you're Tammy Faye Bakker, the female dog ALSO goes to Heaven. In her 1978 bestseller, I GOTTA BE ME, Tammy Faye tells how, when her fluffy poodle died, the bereavement nearly wreaked excruciating pain, trouble and ruin vis-à-vis her mascara--until the Lord gave her inner assurance that she and Fluffy would be reunited one day, in Heaven; an historic reunion that took place on 20 July 2007.)

There is a reason for everything, including pain. Take Jesus. The McDowells explain that Jesus allowed the Jews to nail him to a cross for just one reason: so that men and women, mostly non-Jewish, can escape from the pain, suffering, trouble, and regret of life here on Earth, in order to experience the everlasting, pain-free, bovine bliss of Heaven--in a cube-shaped city in the Sky where there is no change, no struggle, no trouble, no children, no aging--no weather, even! Just the happiness of fulfilled desire!

Imagine a life after death where everyone feels warm and fuzzy all over, for ever and ever! That nice world can be yours, people! And the McDowells can help you to imagine it, in advance.

How nice is "nice"?

Very, VERY nice. On page 76, the McDowells cut to the chase:

"Okay, let's address that question that lingers in the back of your mind, but that you may be hesitant to ask. Will there be SEX in Heaven?"

All great Christian theologians from--saints Matthew, Mark, and Luke, to Augustine and Aquinas, to Rev. Pat Robertson and Pope Benedict XVI--are in complete agreement on the answer to that question:

Absolutely Not! (St. Augustine explains that men, in Heaven, will have an ordinary-looking penis of incorruptible flesh, but it will no longer be used for anything; nor will women, in Heaven, have any further use for their perfect place in which to put it!)

"But is it true," the McDowells ask, "that sex will not exist in Heaven?" The answer, revealed to the McDowells, is more hopeful than St. Augustine was letting on:

Maybe, just maybe, you will have better sex in Heaven than you or your Christian parents ever grasped here on Earth.

The McDowells' impeccable Scriptural logic is as follows: "every desire we have has a legitimate satisfaction. God gave us no illegitimate desires. ... All desires are made to be fulfilled, ultimately in Heaven, or in God Himself.... we know that there will be deep pleasures in Heaven, beyond anything we can grasp today.... Sex is certainly the most pleasurable of physical experiences ... Whereas all pleasures are now tainted by the Fall in the Garden, He intends none of them to be lost. All that was created will be restored."

The McDowells invite all of us, when we imagine the pleasures of Heaven, to put two and two together. Or put one and three together. Or put one on one, in reverse missionary position. However you want to desire it, in Heaven, may be okay! Because God gave you no illegitimate desires, people! (And you older guys will not be needing Viagra, when your legitimate pleasure is restored, up there!)

Is it any wonder that Islam today is gaining more converts than Christianity? How can Christian Heaven compete with the promise of seventy virgins after death? The McDowells think they know. And they may be onto something here--a new doctrine that could be very Good News indeed for the future of Christian evangelism.

At a time when young people, especially in America, are leaving the church in droves, Josh and Sean McDowell have discovered a teaching that may just bring those kids back into the evangelical fold...

Kids, if you can just say no to sex here on Earth--where there are so many troubles, and pains, and STDs, and unexpected pregnancies--you can still look forward to something very special, after you're dead.
