Overview
What do the life and teaching of Jesus have to say about the most critical global problems in our world today?

Acclaimed author and Emergent church leader Brian McLaren states, "More and more Christian leaders are beginning to realize that for the millions of young adults who have recently dropped out of church, Christianity is a failed religion. Why? Because it has specialized in dealing with 'spiritual needs' to the exclusion of physical and social needs. It has focused on 'me' and 'my eternal destiny,' but it has failed to address the dominant societal and global realities of their lifetime: systemic injustice, poverty, and dysfunction."

McLaren asks, "Shouldn't a message purporting to be the best news in the world be doing better than this?" What he sets forth in this provocative, unsettling work is a "form of Christian faith that is holistic, integral, balanced, that offers good news for both the living and the dying, that speaks of God's grace at work both in this life and the life to come, both to individuals and to societies and the planet as a whole."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Vital Information about our ENORMOUS global problems  May 29, 2010
I am about half way through this book. It contains vital information about the global problems that we are facing and suggests we are in a suicidal downward spiral as a nation and world. First we must face our denial. The connection of these global problems and Jesus comes next beginning with the distorted beliefs we have about Jesus and his teachings. Can't wait to get back to this book daily and looking forword to all that is to come in my reading and the author's take on how we might face these problems whether we are "Christian" or not. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to look at the problems but also for anyone wanting to find out what "Jesus' followers" should really be doing (that the church has and is failing to do as they preach a distorted understanding of Him).

The Great Unveiling  May 3, 2010
History shall record that there were Revolutions brought about by military power. There were Revolutions brought about by political intrigue.

And then... there were Revolutions brought about by Brian McLaren.

Brian McLaren offers shinning hope to a dark world through the same Christianity which has brought nothing but death and destruction to our planet for the last 1,900 years. In the name of our mighty Lord and Savior, Rob Bell, I am a man who can see once again!

Humanity will be eternally grateful to McLaren for straightening out our horrendously wrong views about the Cross. To think that the church actually once believed that the cross had something to do with sin and forgiveness and stuff like that. No, no, those were the dark ages. Now we correctly understand that the Cross is all about poorer people in third world world countries have hope of a better life now.

"My chains fell off, my heart was free!"

Beyond Capitalism, & Socialism  Apr 21, 2010
Brian McLaren continues his journey of promoting the story of Jesus into the post-modern world.

With Everything Must Change, McLaren attempts to prove that Jesus would be a promoter of Social Justice.

I have to say, this book was hard to read. Not because I didn't agree with everything Brian wrote, but that he used the words "story" and "system" too frequently. This idea that certain words are key to post-modern readers is silly.

Brian claims we suffer from a suicidal system that contains 3 interlocking systems: The Security System, The Prosperity System and The Equity System.

See how you can get sick of the repetition?

According to McLaren and his Emergent views, Jesus and people of faith must move beyond "hot button" topics like global warming and abortion. We need to get our nations to spend less on weapons and more on peace-making.

Some people would accuse McLaren as an Obama-socialist hidden in the guise of religion. And he would respond that it's beyond that; the way of following Jesus is more than being dubbed a Capitalist or Communist or Socialist. Those are all different sides to the same coin. Jesus offers us a new coin, as it were.

The book is long. And the repetitions almost destroy an interesting journey through putting our faith into practice. And organizing our religion.

Loved "Generous Orthodoxy", disliked this.  Mar 5, 2010
I know it is difficult for people of strong political beliefs to remain neutral when encountering a topic such as McLaren tackles here. His points regarding traditional Christian Fundamentalism are well taken, but he loses me when he persistently points to the United States, our government, and our culture as the cause of world suffering. This nation doles out more food, money and technology than the rest of the world combined. When tragedy strikes, such as the Tsunami or the Haiti crisis, who is there first and in droves? We are. We don't act out of guilt, but true benevolence. When the Samaritan took care of the wounded man, he didn't apologize for being wealthy enough to afford to put him at the inn. He just paid for it. I don't feel the need to apologize for our success as a nation and flagellate ourselves over it.

A guide book for the future of the church  Feb 16, 2010
I am excited about it. It is written in a more interesting style than several I have read recently, and his premeses seem to be right on target. Loved it.
