Item Description...
Following the events of A Name of Her Own, Marie Dorion relocates her family and continues her efforts to keep her children fed and clothed, a challenge that tests her faith and is further complicated by the abrupt end of a relationship and her son's disappearance. Original.

Publishers Description
Continuing the Tender Ties Historical Series, "Every Fixed Star" brings readers more of the dramatic, fictionalized account of Marie Dorion: the real-life woman who was the first mother to cross the Rocky Mountains and remain in the Northwest. In Book Two of the series, Marie learns the value of a tender heart, the faith of distant friends, and the act of holding life's circumstances in open hands.
Following the family tragedy, the great battle for survival, and the test of faith described in "A Name of Her Own," Marie relocates her family to the Pacific Northwest territory's Okanogan settlement. The year is 1814 and, as is customary of her life out West, Marie faces constant challenges simply to keep her children clothed and fed.
Yet inside each challenge awaits a gift to be unwrapped. Countless times, Marie has proven herself a survivor. Incredibly, she must now endure further realizations of a woman's fears: an abrupt ending to love, distance from friends, the disappearance of one child, the consequences of another's poor choices.
Through it all, Marie is tempted to believe that she doesn't deserve God's love in the everyday places. When blessings arrive, she struggles to accept them, fearing they will be followed by more difficult challenges. But ultimately, the threads of past friendships and their prayers, a faithful love, and her own service to others all lead her to God's gift of a full and abundant life.

In The Author's Own Words...

If you'd like more information about me, please come visit my website at and click on my blog. My dog also has a blog and you can find out what it's like to be Bodacious Bo, too. A monthly newsletter called Story Sparks is my way of sharing books about authors I enjoy as well as commenting on life and love. You'll find out more about me than you probably ever wanted to know!

One item not listed on my lists of books is my selection included in an anthology called "Crazy Woman Creek: Women Rewrite the American West" published by Houghton Mifflin I also have a piece in Storytellers II, a book published a few years ago by Multnomah Press and a few short selections in Daily Guideposts of a few years back. My first novella, "The Courting Quilt" is part of a collection that made the New York Times bestsellers September 2011 in a collection called Log Cabin Christmas. The rest of my writing, as they say, is history. Or it was until my first contemporary came out this fall. Called Barcelona Calling, it's the story of a writer who loses her way as she seeks fulfillment thinking she'll find it with fame. It's a laugh out loud book according to reviewers. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A great history lesson along with a wonderful story.  Nov 27, 2008
Jame Kirkpatrick has again given us a wonderful read. I have read everything she has written and can't wait for the next book. You will love this wonderful story based on historical fact. She weaves a wonderful story and keeps your attention right to the last page.
A gifted author, a wonderful series  Jun 20, 2008
This second book in a series of three, was such a good read, I wish there were 10 stars to rate these. Very knowlegable about the first settlers to the Northwest, and the insight into the Native American culture, is eye opening and heartwarming.
Not as good as "Kinship & Courage" series  Sep 6, 2006
After reading the "All Together In One Place", I was expecting a lot more from the Tender Ties series. It's not that they aren't particularly good, they're just not as good as the others of Jane Kirkpatrick's that I've read. The timelines are a little harder to follow because they sometimes skip ahead months and even years. Like I said, it's not that these aren't good books, they just aren't quite what I've come to expect from her.
Careful research brings history to life.  Jul 26, 2006
Jane Kirkpatrick brings the story of westward expansion to life through the experiences of Marie Dorion, her extended family and friends. The list of actual historical characters near the front of the book helps the reader identify and keep relationships in mind. The author has done her homework for presenting history in a believable and interesting way.

Perhaps narrowing her field of characters would make a more readable, but less historically accurate tale.
Marie is haunted by a past filled with mistakes  Oct 14, 2003
Every Fixed Star by Jane Kirkpatrick is an historical novel based upon the life of Marie Dorion, who was the first mother to cross the Rocky Mountains. Marie is haunted by a past filled with mistakes and she struggles with more than just the physical stresses and dangers of early pioneer life in the Northwest. Marie believes she is undeserving of a rich, good life -- until she makes a life-changing discovery. A technically flawless recording, Every Fixed Star is very ably narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. Highly recommended listening, Every Fixed Star is also available in a CD format.
