Overview
In this excellent and accessible introduction, now in a second edition, Childs helpfully articulates the shared features of Christian faith and shows how that communal commitment forms our values, character, virtues, and "eagerness to do what is right." Who we are informs what we choose. This dynamic, dialogical basis for ethics is an open framework. Childs applies it to a host of tough, real-life dilemmas such as affirmative action, end-of-life decisions, medical ethics, truth telling, environmental justice, and war-making. Previously published by Fortress Press in 1992 as Faith, Formation, and Decision, the new edition updates discussions throughout, adds numerous cases and illustrations, adds questions for discussion and items for further reading, and contains a new section on courage.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not so thinly disguised Marxism  Oct 13, 2009
Prof. Childs wants his book to be a dialogical approach to the issue of Christian ethics. One definition of dialogue is, "an exchange of ideas or opinions on a particular issue, esp. a political or religious issue, with a view to reaching an amicable agreement or settlement". As the author, it is his ethical obligation to fairly represent both sides of the issues he presents if it is to be dialogical. He fails miserably in this obligation. The book has a decidedly leftward political bias. When offering his version of what the other side has to say he uses stereotypes and caricatures or mischaracterizations. Extremists on the right end of the spectrum are characterized by "a rigid traditionalism that has condemned the lingering secular spirit and the postmodern celebration of diversity"; while extremism on the left is characterized by a belief that "the church must modify its teachings in light of new understandings and situations". He condemns conservative Christian participation in the political process but lauds liberal political initiatives.

In Prof. Childs' world the poor are always "oppressed" (his favorite word) or "exploited" or "victims of injustice" and "racism, classism and sexism" or oppressive economic and social circumstances" or "white oppression". The rich are oppressors who "amass wealth by unjust means" and "make victims out of those with lesser means" and who manipulate "the economic system for unjust gains". Marxist code words abound and he must mention four or five times, "to each according to his need". The first part of Marx's dictum "from each according to his ability" is understood or reworded into, "Limits of personal freedom and ambition are set by the needs of our neighbors".

Childs says that to interpret, "You shall not steal" as prohibiting thievery is a "narrow interpretation [which is] too limiting" because people may actually use it to "insist on protection of their property". Not only must government insure equality of opportunity but also equality of outcome.

The suggestion that sometimes people ought to be held accountable for their actions or decisions is called "blaming the victims" which casts the one asking the question as insensitive and preempts further discussion.

He offers several sanitized quotes from Marxist, Liberation theologians like "noted Latin American theologian" Gustavo Gutierrez and "the well known African American theologian" James H. Cone. He does not mention that Gutierrez was condemned by the Church for teachings incompatible with the teachings of the Church. While Cone has written some vile, racist things in the spirit of Malcolm X and Jeremiah Wright.

There were a couple of good chapters which is what earned it the stars I gave it. But this is a very important topic and it deserves a much better treatment than this book gave it.
