Escaping the Devil's Bedroom - Sex Trafficking, Global Prostitution, and the Gospel's Transforming Power
By Dawn Herzog Jewell

Binding: Softcover

From the Back Cover
The sex industry enslaves millions of women, but churches and individual Christians are fighting back. Dawn Jewell weaves the stories of individual victims with a careful examination of the realities that propelled them into prostitution in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Alongside, she highlights ministries that are reaching one life at a time through prayerful visits to strip-clubs, bars, and seedy streets. Readers will perceive the gospel's transforming power in individuals who have left prostitution and found new life in Christ.

"Christians in many parts of the world are trying to bring light into the darkness, and healing to those who are hurt. If you wish to engage with this challenge, then this is a book you should read." -Baroness Caroline Cox

"What is a girl? Property? Unpaid labor? A sex object? Or a human being created in the image of God? This book tells stories of girl-and boy-once considered disposable, who now live with dignity." -Dr. Miriam Adeney Associate Professor of World Christian Studies Seattle Pacific University

"Escaping the Devil's Bedroom helps readers play a role in ending this modern-day slavery. Dawn offers us hope, inspires compassion, and empowers us to be Christ's hands and feet healing our broken world." -Camerin Courtney Editor, Today's Christian Woman

Best introduction available for lay Christians  Oct 14, 2009
This book is the best introduction available about the issues of the sex trade and trafficking for the lay Christian. I really appreciated how Jewell emphasized the importance of prayer as a foundation for ministry (which was something missing from Batstone's book). Her discussion of the connection between the sex trade and trafficking was nuanced, and she showed that, for many women who are in prostitution "voluntarily," a heart-change or decision is necessary. This is what my own partners in ministry keep telling me--it is not enough to have jobs or training available--the women need to decide to leave, and this decision is made possible through relationships--and of course the power of Christ. If you only read one book on the sex trade and trafficking, read this one.
Important and inspiring  Mar 31, 2009

Dawn Herzog Jewell's main goal in writing "Escaping the Devil's Bedroom" is "to reveal what today's headlines overlook. The Holy Spirit is at work in the dingiest alleys, streets, and hotel rooms. Jesus' followers are reaching lives that the world, and sometimes the church, shuns and views as hopeless. These are the stories that shout to us that our God is greater than all other reality, power, and authority." (p. 17)

The book is divided into three parts. The first section is entitled "Stories of Darkness" and profiles different individuals involved in prostitution, sex trafficking, and stripping. In the second section, called "Stories of Hope," the author takes a look at the people attempting to help these victims. Finally, the third section, "Your Part in the Story," provides us with actions that we can take to help people in these unfortunate situations.

Reading some of the individual stories was heartbreaking, particularly the stories of the youngest victims. Some of the passages opened my eyes and made me view things a little differently. Often we think that the people in this industry choose to be there, but there are other factors that come into play. I truly admire the people that reach out to these people and try to provide assistance.

The inclusion of the photographs in the center section added a lot to the book as it is always nice to put faces with names. While I found the Jewell's book to be very powerful, there was one thing that I would have changed. The stories of the victims are told in the beginning and then finished later on in the book. I found myself having to go back and skim over their stories as I had forgotten who was who by the time I got to the conclusion of the person's story. This disrupted the flow of the book a little bit. However, all in all, I think that "Escaping the Devil's Bedroom" is an important and inspiring work.

Sobering and eye opening  Feb 13, 2009
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (2/09)

By writing "Escaping the Devil's Bedroom," Dawn Jewell teaches us about the horrors and prevalence of prostitution in the world. She takes us into the worlds of several people who are engaged in it. She discusses their stories with compassion. It was really eye opening to see how people can be forced into it and then stuck. For some, they were already being abused at home; for others, they are doing it to support their families. It was so sad to read their stories.

When she tells the stories of men working as prostitutes, she teaches us that they do not have it any better than the women. They are put in just as much danger. This is something that I hadn't realized.

Mrs. Jewell also writes about prostitution and abuse involving children. It is so horrific to see that there are many children sold into it by their families. If your parents won't protect you, then what chance do you stand? Many children cannot survive this kind of abuse, or they end up with horrible diseases such as AIDS. The statistics are horrible.

People, including many Americans, will travel for sex. This is called "Sex Tourism." Many times this involves sex with children. There are countries with laws to protect against this, but when you have law enforcement people that are poor and can be paid off, not much gets done. I personally know some people that engage in sex tourism. They think that if it happens outside the US, it doesn't mean anything to their families. They have no clue that their participation is degrading and abusive, or that the people with whom they are engaging in the acts, are not doing it because they want to, but because they are being forced to.

Reading the stories of these victims really impacted how I look at them. I feel much more compassion now, especially after learning about sex trafficking and how they get trapped in the industry. Sometimes they have to stay because their family members are being threatened at home. It is horrifying. Our own media is desensitizing us to what kind of impact the sex trade has upon our culture. We see children in risqué clothing, hear songs about women being ho's and take strip aerobics and pole-dancing classes because it is considered sexy. The media places very little value on true intimacy. Fortunately, there are Christian organizations with volunteers that seek to make a difference in the lives of these people. The author includes a list of resources for readers who want to get involved.

I don't think anybody that engages themselves as prostitutes grew up thinking, "Someday I want to become a prostitute." Instead, for whatever reasons, they get sucked into the trade. I truly hope that the organizations that seek to help these people get out of the business and find a better way of life will make a huge impact on the lives of these people. By getting this book out there and educating the public, I think that this will make a good start for change. Everyone should read "Escaping the Devil's Bedroom" by Dawn Herzog Jewell so that their eyes will be opened. I think that John's should be ordered to read it, so that they gain an understanding of how much pain they are causing others.

God Cares for Lost People  Sep 1, 2008
As I read the first chapter, what I found so amazing is that Dawn helped me to see those people caught in the sex trade as individuals in desperate need of love. It was so easy before for me to see them as objects, but Dawn introduces me to people who were broken and have now been made whole in Christ.

One of the innovative elements is how Dawn carries the theme of lost and found people throughout the book. So many books focus on the sin and forget the person. Dawn turned that equation around and made it about those people who are caught in the middle of their sin and their circumstances. Even when the people in the book are hard to love, Dawn challenges the reader to see them as Jesus does.

Dawn has tackled a subject that few would cover. She has dealt with the topic in a straightforward way that shows the sin but then focuses on the solution. In all that she had friends and co-workers praying for her and her work.

I believe that Dawn's risk is going to pay off in exciting ways as people around the world get to know what ministry is going on to free people from the sex trade and how they can get involved.
Escaping The Devil's Bedroom  Aug 27, 2008
It took courage to write "Escaping The Devil's Bedroom" and it takes courage to read it. But in the end it is a book of hope and that hope is Jesus. Christ asks each of us, "Do you wish to get well?" (John 5:6). Some of the women and men presented on these pages make that courageous choice as options are given them by the body of Christ. Dawn Herzog Jewell has identified the extent of the physical, emotional and spiritual bondage faced by legions of children, women and men. She has also presented the loving women and men of the body of Christ who pray and then engage the enemy through practical support and service. Dawn presents a call to personal action at the conclusion of each chapter and a final section which places our reliance on God's leading and power. The author keeps pointing to Jesus as the only means of escape and invites the reader to embody him to those in bondage.
