Publishers Description
2005 ECPA Retailer's Choice Award winner for best biography/autobiography Steve Saint was five years old when his father, missionary pilot Nate Saint, was speared to death by a primitive Ecuadorian tribe. In adulthood, Steve, having left Ecuador for a successful business career in the United States, never imagined making the jungle his home again. But when that same tribe asks him to help them, Steve, his wife, and their teenage children move back to the jungle. There, Steve learns long-buried secrets about his father's murder, confronts difficult choices, and finds himself caught between two worlds. Soon to be a major motion picture (January 2006), "End of the Spear" brilliantly chronicles the continuing story that first captured the world's attention in the bestselling book, "Through Gates of Splendor."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Awe Inspiring  Mar 12, 2007
If you ever wonder if one person can make a difference, then you need to read this book. It will make you delve deep into yourself and consider your priorities. This book creates the desire to truly make a difference in this world. It also is thought provoking on how we, as "educated people", are quite egotistical and think our way of life is the only way of life. A truly magnificent story!
Incredible Story / True Heroism!  Feb 11, 2007
This is a must own, so that it can be shared and viewed each year or two. Stories of the bravery and heroism of missionaries is one that is shared much too rarely. There is no greater love!
A few downsides of the book  Feb 8, 2007
I like this book. I agree with the positive reviews here, but the book is not 100% flawless. Saint appears to be a numerologist: he assigns a mystical significance to every number he encounters, ascribing it to destiny or fate. It makes him seem needlessly superstitious, although his musings don't seem to affect his actions or the story in any way.

Also, the book's layout, jumping between three and sometimes four time periods, with flashbacks within flashbacks, is somewhat confusing. I'd have liked an editor to go over it again.
The fascinating back-story of the Waodani  Jan 11, 2007
I picked up End of the Spear after having seen the movie of the same title. I needed more detail, particularly knowing the artistic license often required for film. The book did not disappoint. Many of my questions were answered, and the story of what has transpired almost to the present day as Steve Saint fights to protect the Waodani from the outside world while at the same time finding ways to give them the benefits that some of modern life can bring, as well as wean them from dependence on himself, are both fascinating and, at times, heartbreaking.
The only reason for four stars is to acknowledge that the writing is at times uneven, Steve is not a writer, per se. But don't let that stop you! If you've any interest at all in the story, I highly recommend the book.
Great Read, even for a school assignment :)  Oct 24, 2006
I think the End of the Spear was a very powerful and moving book. Steve Saint, the author of the book described the Waodoni very different from the way the outside views them. In our minds the Waodoni or Aucas, as they are more commonly known, are seen as vicious and savage people. Steve, however, portrays them as a peaceful and gentle people. It is very moving to see how Steve is taken in by the very people who speared his father.
Steve was just a boy when his father, Nate Saint, was brutally killed by Auca warriors. Nate was a missionary to the jungles of Ecuador, South America. He and his missionary friends wanted to share the gospel with the Aucas. When they made contact with the remote tribe, however, the Aucas speared Nate Saint and his five missionary friends in what today is known as the spearing of Palm Beach. Several years later, Steve's mother, Marj, trekked back into the jungle to share the gospel with the people who speared her husband.
The End of the Spear is the story of Steve and his family. It is about their struggles and triumphs, when they move from America to the Waodoni way of life, so they can share the gospel with them. It is how Steve comes to love and accept the very people who killed his father. I think it is a phenomenal book that should be read time and time again.
