Beautiful!  Feb 23, 2010
I first heard "Valley of the Dying Sun" get airplay and then found this EP. I was very pleased and asked for the full CD for Christmas. It would become my best listen for 2009. Everyday I was home for a month I would play "The End Is Not The End"! I just couldn't put it down and kept discovering new favourite songs that I would look forward to listening. The music agrees with me, and once I pieced this one together, the lyrics sent me from euphoria to tears ("By Your Side").
Now I'm listening to Switchfoot's new album, Hello Hurricane, which I have
rediscovered. If I may make a ready comparison, the impact of "The End Is Not The End" resembles Switchfoot's "A Beautiful Letdown." Although it has not garnered the same popularity, "The End Is Not The End" is a treat and one of my current favourites.
Fantastic, Timeless, Rock Music  Oct 19, 2009
Admittedly, I'm a little late to this party. Well, actually, I'm just a little late to comment on the party. Ever since it came out back in September of 2008, House of Heroes' little masterpiece of modern rock, The End Is Not The End, has garnered significant playing time on my iPod and in my car. It's one of those rare collections that never seems to get old to me.

It's a little difficult to review an album that achieved so much hype this far after the release. There's been sufficient time for people to discover the band, hype them beyond what any album could actually live up to, and then have others who didn't understand what was so great about the band because they'd been overhyped. Typical backlash to some reviews that seemingly overly-gushed about the band. Their expectations were simply unrealistic.

So where's the reality? Truly, it's closer to the gushing than the reactionary critiques. This really is an amazing album. It just is. A year later, I'm still saying that. I'm quite certain I'll still be saying that a year from now. Stylistically, it's a timeless form of rock that can certainly last. Honestly, I think this album deserves the vast majority of the praise it received, and it's settled easily into my all-time Top 5.

"Epic" is a word thrown around far too often to describe music, but this 16-track beast (including only 1 short instrumental intro) fits the bill. Borrowing musically from the Beatles, Queen, and many others, the band captures amazing energy in each song, from the quirky "If" to the powerful riffs of "Lose Control." "In The Valley of The Dying Sun" conjures a Bohemian Rhapsody-like feel, as the song traverses multiple musical styles effortlessly. Other fantastic standouts include "Code Name: Raven," "By Your Side," "Baby's A Red," and "Field Of Daggers." No two songs sound the same; quite a feat for an album boasting 15 songs.

While the musicality of the album is incredible, the lyrics are of equal appeal. Set against the backdrop of WWII, the band explores themes of war, love, loyalty, destiny, and forgiveness, among others. This is intelligent writing, toeing the line of contentious issues perfectly, dropping bombs on each side of an argument, not shying away from complexity. The album has you rocking out one minute and pondering the justifications (or lack thereof) for war the next.

If you haven't yet heard this album yet and are a fan of rock music, it truly is a must-have. I don't like to give out 5's in reviews, but if any album deserved the rating, it's this one. Now that it's been out long enough, we've moved past the hype stage and I believe the album still sounds as fresh and poignant today as when I first heard it. It's only getting better with age.
Solid Album  Oct 19, 2009
I liked these guys after seeing them live. They really put on a show and are better live. This album is more complex and mature than previous records. It is a complete experience. Not many albums in my collection are good all the way through like this one. It has catchy lyrics that are fun to sing along with.
House of Heroes- The End Is Not the End []  Aug 23, 2009
House of Heroes was not a band that I was familiar with prior to their sophomore release. All of the hype about them finally making a new album prompted me to check them out. And I am very glad I did. House of Heroes left their fans hanging for a whopping four years after their first release (with only two new songs on their re-release to fill the gap) and now, finally, they return with The End Is Not The End.

The End Is Not The End is an album with a little bit of a concept to it, since many of the songs have something to do with World War II. The opening instrumental track leads into the catchy love song "If." The song makes for a great opening track, and is immediately followed by the album's hardest rocking track, "Lose Control." "In The Valley Of The Dying Sun" is a pretty different song dealing with a man who thinks God is his enemy and ends up fighting him and realizing that He wasn't. Musically it is a very diverse song, skipping to various tempos, and allowing lead vocalist Tim Skipper to use his falsetto voice more. "Code Name: Raven" is another really catchy song, declaring, "I'd rather die than live without mercy and love." "By Your Side", the song that the album title is derived from, slows the album down for a bit, and actually sounds very nice, telling the story of a man going to war. The second half of the album shows HOH's punk side a little bit more than the first. "Journey Into Space, Pt. 1" and "Drown" have very similar sounding openings, but are still very good songs.

If you bought The End Is Not The End in CD form at one of HOH's shows before March 09, the album closes at "Field of Daggers," a very good closing song.

If you bought The End Is Not The End on iTunes, the last song is "The Young And The Brutal," a hidden track on the previous to March copy. It's a very fun and fast paced song, which fans of "Friday Night" from Say No More will appreciate.

The Acoustic End EP has the two acoustic tracks that took the place of "The Young And The Brutal" for the in-stores release in March. They are both very good songs, although some may find "Ghost" to be a sad and somewhat negative song, as it deals with the life of a man who "fell in with the wrong crowd." Not found on the CD release is the acoustic reworking of "If," which has a little bit of a quicker tempo.

So, in the end (which we know is not really the end), The End Is Not The End blew me away. It is an almost entirely flawless work, sure to make you tap your feet at one point or another, and slowing it down just at the right points. It's an almost perfect blend of songs, and there is not one that I would skip while listening to the album. This is why The End Is Not The End, is--in my opinion--one of the best albums to hit the Christian music market in a very long time.
WOW  Aug 20, 2009
This is by far one of my favorite CD's and now one of the most respected albums on my Ipod. The Recording is 100% solid. I hear and understand new things ever time I listen. It completely blows my mind every time I listen to this. Today I noticed little laser blasts on one of the songs which I never heard, and it made my day (1:47 if I remember correctly of "in the Valley of the dying sun"). They had harmonicas and everything.
Lyrics-Wise this is extremely healthy. Very deep Lyrics on every part of every song. I loved it, fun rock music with outstanding lyrics is my type of music. Awesome in every sense. Some lyrics were pretty hard to swallow, but it helps you figure your point of view and what would you do in a situation like that. It really makes you think.
The whole CD is themed to WW2, which they set a new record for.
No cons at all. Also get the "acoustic Ep" if you liked this, but of course you did; so you can just go ahead and buy it now. ;)
