Publishers Description
Ellie Maust, an Old Order Amish girl growing up in the early 1900s, wishes she could wear bright dresses like her English friend, Missy, and face cream and perfume like their fancy Amish hired girl, Susie Glick.

As Ellie helps to care for the new babies in her family, milks cows, and learns to can and garden, she strains against her father's strict ideas and wonders what her future will hold. Along the way, she has adventures, including a sleepover at her English friend's house and a runaway buggy ride.

When Ellie's family moves to a new farm, she must take on even more chores and responsibility for her younger siblings. But attending Sunday night singings with the young people in her community and beginning a courtship with kind, gentle David Eash fill Ellie's days with contentment.

When tragedy strikes her family, Ellie must find a way to go on. Finding comfort in her Amish faith and her community, Ellie blossoms into a young woman who dedicates her future plans to God.

A loving and enlightening book  Apr 19, 2005
This is the story of Ellie Maust, a young girl growing up in the Amish community. Throughout her youth, Ellie saw the many interesting things that the outside world has, but she also saw all of the things that her own community has. And so, Ellie faces her temptations and her questions, and grows in her faith and in her love for her special heritage.

I must say, I found this to be a wonderful book. The author, who grew up in the Amish community, does a wonderful job of bringing the Amish existence alive, showing how the Amish live and love and worship. I found this to be a loving and enlightening book, one that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who loves a good story.

[By the way, if you would like to read a story set in the Amish community, that expresses a deep love of Christ, then I would highly recommend Sanctuary by Beverly & David Lewis.]
Disappointing  Feb 17, 2005
(Definition: The Amish are a North American Anabaptist sect, which believes in strict separation from the world, even separation from the world's technology.)

I picked up this book as a work of "Christian literature." It tells the story of a young Amish girl, who faces the temptations of the world outside her congregation. Overcoming these and embracing her Anabaptist lifestyle, she grows to love it, and when she sees what happened to an Englisher (non-Amish) friend, she is thankful to her father for saving her from the temptation to leave the Amish congregation, and enter a world of sin.

I have two minds about this book. On the up-side, this is a nice, pleasant story which is slow moving and touching in its own way. On the down-side, I wouldn't really call this Christian literature. Ellie doesn't so much embrace a faith in Jesus Christ (who isn't mentioned in this book, by the way), as she does embrace a community, a sect, a lifestyle. Does she thank God for shedding His Grace on her and making her a Christian? No, she's thankful to her earthly father for making her Amish.

So, if you are looking for a book about the Amish lifestyle, then you will like this book. If you are looking for a book about a Christian young girl, expressing her faith, then you will be disappointed, as I am.
A great way to learn  Jul 16, 2003
This book is a book you will not want to put down. Ellie explains what is like to be Amish the good along with the bad. You will learn so many things about the Amish ways. I laughed and cryed along with Ellie. It really truly the way the Amish live come to you. The way Ellie struggles with her questions and finds out her answers. This is a awsome Christain book. It is a awsome way to learn more about the Amish. Enjoy!

Good Christian Read for my 8 year old  Sep 19, 2001
My daughter picked up Ellie while on a vacation in Amish country. We are now on our third book in the series and she is "hooked". She loves to imagine what is like to be living in such a different culture, and yet so near where we live. Better yet, this series provides a good story line, good information about the Amish, respectful of their way of life, with a Christian perspective that keeps the stories uplifting and positive, but not prissy.

This first book is about Ellie's growing up years (brief as they seem to be) and her experiences with her "Englisher" friend at the local elementary school. It is very well done and interesting, with a vocabulary that my daughter enjoys.

We heartily recommend this book.

Truly Wonderful  Jul 16, 2001
Ellie is a charming and captivating story of a young girl learning and experiencing the ways of the amish. Slow-paced, the book is perfect for a comfortable day of relaxation. Though you had better schedule a whole day because you won't be able to put this book down. I found myself falling in love with Ellie and her simple family. I have read and re-read all the books in the series, and I must say, the were truly a comfort and a joy.
