Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the Amercan Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature.

Her Dear Mr. Henshaw was awarded the 1984 John Newbery Medal, and both Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. In addition, her books have won more than thirty-five statewide awards based on the votes of her young readers. Ellen Tebbits  Apr 8, 2008
Very upset with my purchase! The item was suppossed to be like new and the book had writing in the front cover (marker with someone's name) and both the front and back covers were very torn! I would not recommend buying something from this person again!
'Ellen Tebbits' is a winner!  Feb 18, 2008
Having a best friend is one of the most crucial factors of growing up. It's essential to have someone who is always around to share secrets, share clothes, and spend time with. When you're without a best friend, however, everything is in shambles. Just ask third-grader Ellen Tebbits.

Ellen Tebbits had always been blessed with a best friend in the form of her next-door neighbor, Nancy Jane. But when Nancy Jane moves away, Ellen is left to her own devices. An only child, Ellen can't rely on hanging around with brothers or sisters, so must make do with entertaining herself - which proves harder than she'd ever imagined. All she truly wants is to have a best friend who lives on Tillamook Street, like herself, or somewhere close by. Enter Austine Allen. Austine Allen is a new girl from California who does nothing but talk about how wonderful the sunshine state where she grew up is. But she may just be the perfect recruit for Ellen's new best friend. After meeting in Mrs. Spofford's ballet class, Ellen and Austine realize that they have much more in common than they ever thought possible - including the fact that they're both forced to wear itchy, wool underwear during the chillier months. Hiding the same secret - about the wool underwear - is the ice breaker they both need to confide in one another; and, before they know it, Ellen and Austine are the best of friends. Everything they do, they do with one another - from riding horses, to baking brownies, and even clapping erasers at school. As if having someone by your side to experience all kinds of new things wasn't wonderful enough, Ellen learns that navigating the troubling waters of social situations and growing up is simplified when you have a best friend by your side - even putting up with pesky boys like the cowboy-clad Otis Spofford. But when Ellen does something unimaginable, Austine instantly stops speaking to her, and Ellen is unsure of how to get back on good terms with her one-time best friend. Now she's forced to come up with a plan to prove to Austine just how sorry she truly is, and win back her friendship. But she's quickly learning that saying sorry can be harder than she ever believed.

Beverly Cleary has imagination. But even more than imagination, she knows exactly how to weave tough situations - such as saying sorry and coming to terms with your mistakes - into words that are clear cut, concise, and easy-to-understand for the young/middle readers that her books are geared for. Which is exactly what she does within the pages of ELLEN TEBBITS. Cleary has created an assortment of characters who are humorous and fun, yet must face difficult decisions, and life-changing moments which are extremely relatable to readers. Ellen is an adorable character, whose passion for a best friend is appealing and fun. Her constant run-ins with the infuriating Otis Spofford provide moments of laugh-out-loud humor; while her friendship with Austine gives the reader an up-close-and-personal glimpse into a true friendship, and the turmoil that can accompany it. Once again, Cleary has crafted a children's novel that bridges gaps, and provides a little something for readers of all ages. ELLEN TEBBITS is a winner!

Wonderful book, AWFUL voiceover  Oct 5, 2007
A caveat: this is a marvelous book -- I adore it. However, the actress reading it delivers the worst performance of a children's book I've ever heard. For reasons known only to her and her director, she chose to voice Austine as a geriatric New York male with a learning disability. Every time Austine spoke, it completely ruined the book for my family. Even my KIDS noticed how incongruous the voice of Austine was: "Mommy, why does Austine sound like an old man? What's wrong with her?" Truly, truly awful. So be warned -- a fabulous story, a horrific read.
My son loves it!  Jan 9, 2007
My son and I had just started reading some of Cleary's well-known titles together as bed-time stories, and I decided to buy some on CD as well. Cleary has now become his all time favorite and I couldn't be more delighted, as I recall racing through her books when I was my son's age! He can relate to so many of the characters (especially the michievous ones), and the CD has now become a nighttime favorite. Once our oral story time is over, he will fall asleep listening to Ellen Tebbits or Ramona Quimby's escapades on CD. It's become a ritual in our house and I'm delighted he's so interested in reading.
Classic!  Dec 2, 2006
Shy eight-year-old Ellen's life is filled with daily traumas, from being forced to wear itchy, bunch long underwear beneath her tutu to dance class, to longing for her teacher to select her to clap erasers. All this could be bearable, she thinks, if she had a best friend...

Then Austine moves into town. Although she's fresh from California, the two girls have a lot in common (including the dreaded long underwear!) With Austine, Ellen is more confident, and happier than she's ever been before. But then a silly misunderstanding over a dress threatens to ruin their friendship for good...
