Overview
In an increasingly secular society, the Christian community must witness a way of life that produces whole and holy people who testify to the truthfulness of the story of Jesus in their lives. Internally, church membership reflects nearly every race, language, culture, spirituality, and Christian theology in existence. There are three particular challenges for those who prepare people for the church's ministries and those working in ministry itself: diversity, integration, and assessment. Educating Leaders for Ministry examines what each challenge means and identifies ways to respond. The material presented here draws on a six-year project, the Keystone Conferences. The project involved twenty Catholic seminaries and schools of theology reflecting on the mission of their institutions within the life of the church as it becomes manifest in the processes of teaching and learning. As these conversations continued over seven years, the issues of diversity, integration, and assessment emerged as persistent and defining aspects of every school in some way. These three issues touch the daily life of the entire Christian community, not just theological schools and seminaries. While there are aspects of these issues in theological education that are particular to Roman Catholicism, Educating Leaders for Ministry is helpful for anyone engaged in theological education today.

Publishers Description
The Catholic church in the United States today faces challenges as it continues its mission of testifying to Jesus Christ in the world and living as a community of witness. In an increasingly secular society, the Christian community must witness to way of life that produces whole and holy people who testify to the truthfulness of the story of Jesus by their lives. Internally, church membership reflects nearly every race, language, culture, spirituality, and Christian theology in existence. While cause for great celebration, such differences do not always evoke a spirit of joy within the Christian community. There are three particular challenges for those who prepare people for the Church's ministries and those working in ministry itself: diversity, integration, and assessment. Educating Leaders for Ministry examines what each challenge means and identifies ways to respond that reflect the deep marks of a theological vision through the lens of theological education. The material presented here draws on a six-year project, the Keystone Conferences. The project involved twenty Catholic seminaries and schools of theology in reflecting on the mission of their institutions within the life of the Church as it becomes manifest in the processes of teaching and learning. As these conversations continued over seven years, the issues of diversity, integration, and assessment emerged as persistent and defining aspects of every school in some way.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Gem of a book  Mar 9, 2007
This is a powerful, concise and eloquent text which will serve a number of purposes. Every academic dean in a seminary should read it -- it's chock full of insight, and provides a multitude of pragmatic processes to help a faculty deepen their learning and collaboration. Every faculty member in a seminary or other theological context should read it -- it makes clear why the academic training which is the credential for teaching in a seminary does very little, if anything, to prepare people to teach in such a context. But it doesn't stop there, it provides wonderful ways to reach students, and helps faculty members rethink how to make their scholarship applicable to their teaching. Finally, it draws on a range of public intellectuals to explore the implications of the book for wider audiences -- including local communities of faith. If you're going to buy one book that draws on the practical wisdom of good teachers to help others learn, buy this one.
