Overview
In addition to his notable work as a premier Christian philosopher, Nicholas Wolterstorff has become a leading voice on faith-based higher education. This volume gathers the best of Wolterstorff's essays from the past twenty-five years dealing collectively with the purpose of Christian higher education and the nature of academic learning. Integrated throughout by the biblical idea of shalom, these nineteen essays present a robust framework for thinking about education that combines a Reformed confessional perspective with a radical social conscience and an increasingly progressivist pedagogy. Wolterstorff develops his ideas in relation to an astonishing variety of thinkers ranging from Calvin, Kuyper, and Jellema to Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant to Weber, Habermas, and MacIntyre. In the process, he critiques various models of education, classic foundationalism, modernization theory, liberal arts, and academic freedom.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
On how to be a Christian college in America  Jun 11, 2005
I am largely paraphrasing the discussion of this book in Christianity Today. As reviewed favorably in the June, 2005 edition of the magazine, this book is one of many that tries to explain how Christian colleges and universities can serve a valuable role in western society and in Christendom. It is mainly the question of the integration of faith and learning, or of learning the specific worldview of this faith while also learning academic physics, history, or the like.

Wolterstorff's approach is to first challenge the standard worldview of western modernity, by accepting postmodernism's attack on modernity's positivistic optimism in the future and in the alleged objective quality of western science. He agrees with postmodernists that those strongly held beliefs are now shattered and in ruins. The grand narratives are gone. But, instead of leaving us to solipcism or materialism to fill the hole westerners have, the Christian college that is truly different can present an alternative worldview to modernity. This Christianity, of evangelicalism, offers answers to these same questions of purpose, the future, the possibility of hope, the role of science, and this doesn't even mention the obvious focal point of morality.

When a college is geared to teaching this other story, with conviction, it is being obedient to God, and it is educating its students to go out into the world of doubts and angst with helpful and invigorating answers, at the same time that it makes its students physicists and historians. The graduates will be peacemakers in their neighborhoods and at their jobs. This is the meaning of "shalom" in the title.

First-rate mind at work  Jul 19, 2004
This book exhibits a first-rate mind at work, one that grapples with the difficult issues in Christian higher education, issues often overlooked by Christian-college scholars. This should be on the required reading list of scholars in Christian colleges throughout the land. An especial thanks to Clarence W. Joldersma and Gloria Goris Stronks for collecting and editing these superb, thought-provoking essays by Professor Wolterstorff of Yale University.
