Item Description...
Disfortune is not in the mainstream of American poetic speech, nor is it easily placed into any of the well-known poetic speech-camps that have arisen on its margins. Terse, haunting lyrics expose the irreducible contradictions of living, wherein "the talking-singing, the whole talking-/singing ball of yarn, begins to unravel." Deceptively casual in tone, these poems offer startling confrontations with "the unoriginal/oblivion," with "the contrived delicacy/of what is emptied and kept." Joe Wenderoth sees "fortune" as the mute history of events proceeding toward the ultimate security; his poems arise from "disfortune," from the need "Just to sing the song that's kept you/quiet/all this time." This book is a rare occurrence, marking not only a new intimacy with the world, but also a remembering of the determined motion of intimacy itself.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Honest, thoughtful, beautiful  Jan 14, 2000
There is little that can be said about the poetry of Joe Wenderoth. It is beautiful, thoughtful, and above all else, honest. He is a true American poet; one of a dying breed.
Pure sweet shadow, except wherein the brained sing it.  Aug 26, 1998
A stunning first book-- American poetry, had it not given itself over to adorning the middle-class stupor, would recognize Wenderoth as one of the most important poets to come down the pike in some time. This is clear from just one book. Wenderoth was placed on the cover of the APR recently-- perhaps this is an indication that there is in the poetry world still some ability to recognize truly compelling, truly original, poems. I suggest you buy this book-- or if not buy, at least read.

--Lucinda Davis

Strong debut  Mar 29, 1997
Whether Wenderoth is a "disciple" of Jack Gilbert or not, I don't know, but the poetry of both men employs a similar methodology: a sharp eye focussed tightly on the thing at hand; an affinity for the phrase, often in place of the sentence; the courage to be concise; the wonderful decision not to bore us with mundane details of his psychology. In one poem he declares [to a woman?], "I can't / hear you / I'm just a the / upon / your shore"--a marvelous line, using an original adaptation of syntax to reflect the way a specific being can be reduced to an article. In "Probably a Strong Undertow" he compares the undertow to the power of music, but with such a literalness that the musicians are wading out into the surf as the poem ends. Virtually no poem, even if it is ultimately a failure, is tedious to read, and Wenderoth's voice is confidential and sure
