Item Description...
Overview
The story of a small garden large enough to hold everything in life that really matters.

?These days the portion of Eden for which I am responsible is fairly modest. . . . It is a small house in a small garden in a small neighborhood. But it is large enough . . . Large enough to hold everything dear.?

Digging In tells the story of the author?s move into an early twentieth-century cottage with a long abandoned back yard, and the work that he and his family had to do to bring a garden to life there. It is the story of the way that the garden became the ground upon which deeper relationships with his family, friends, and neighbors began to blossom and grow.

Written in the gentle, revealing prose for which Benson is acclaimed, this is a lyrical and wise book, beautifully evoking the wonder of planting and seasons, humorously recalling the challenges and the struggles of the labor itself, and carefully observing the simple truths and timeless joys that were there to be found.

Creating God's little haven  Mar 9, 2010
I put Digging In on my wish list and it was purchased for me this past Christmas. Now that early spring is here and the crocuses and daffodils are in bloom, I thought this would be a good time to pull this book out. I am so glad that I did. I spent a full year digging in my own back yard, preparing a flower bed, pulling out taproots and weeds, and bringing a haven out of an abused back yard. Like Robert, this work brought me great joy and peace. It helped me become more attached to this small yard with its small house I this small neighborhood. But to me it is a piece of God's world and needs to be tended as such. Thank you, Robert, for bringing words to all the deep experiences I have and had in my beloved garden.

A Charming Reminder  Jun 7, 2007
Robert Benson's new work, DIGGING IN is another example of a writer at the top of his game. His work on settling into a new place and making it his own is as profound as it is charming. From digging new rose beds to building a writer's workshop to rebuilding his backyard fence several times, each page of DIGGING IN is a delight.

As Always...Excellent  Jun 6, 2007
Some books I purchase via this site. Some I purchase in bookstores, whether for new books, gently used books, or those that are musty and dusty and in general falling apart. Books purchased at this site are typically done for a good reason: I need the book for research, I heard about the book and wanted to read it.... These books are read immediately upon receipt. Those purchased in new bookstores typically become my possession because I entered in to buy a cup of coffee in the bookstore's coffeehouse and came out with a latte and a large bag of books. These books will be placed on a bookshelf or in a closet with the "when I get time" condition stamped upon them. Those purchased dusty and musty are, for me, priceless and become one of the many "100 years or older" books in my collection that are rarely read but often dusted.

And then there are Robert's books. Robert's books are books I'll take any way I can get them, though not typically in musty dusty bookstores because he hasn't lived that long. Yet.

Sometimes I get Robert's books at new bookstores. I walk in for my latte and see that a new book has been released and say, "OH! OH!" I am reading and sipping coffee before I ever hit the checkout counter. Sometimes I receive Robert's books by mail. Fellow authors do that sort of thing for one another. When I see that familiar address in the return corner of the envelope, I say, "OH! OH!" I am reading before my feet ever cross over the threshold of my home. Sometimes I order Robert's books at this site. I press "send" and then, for the next several days, stand at my front window, waiting for the postman.

I received this book from my fellow author and friend. Though I read the first two pages before I hit the front door, I had to put it down upon entering. I had two deadlines of my own to meet and simply HAD to be faithful to my commitments. But, the moment said commitments were fulfilled, I grabbed the little book that had been sitting on my desk (not relegated to a closet!), curled up on my sofa and began to read. And chuckle. And read. And chuckle.

I am not a gardener. I married one, but if you ever see me outside it is typically only because I am getting the mail from the box at the end of our driveway or taking a walk prescribed by my doctor who says that a jaunt to the mailbox is NOT exercise. However, being married to a gardener and having loved the Master Gardener my whole life, I can appreciate what is done to a lawn to make it a garden and I can surely appreciate the beauty of it all. Sometimes, in the cooler parts of the year and during the cooler parts of the day, I may even venture out into my husband's lawn...or garden, as it were.

Robert has taken the simple and enjoyable (or so I hear) act of gardening and woven it with life lessons. This is why I chuckled. These are lessons we all learn one way or the other. For Robert, it was in the garden. And, whether you are a gardener or simply enjoy the beauty of someone else's handiwork, this book will remind you of all those life lessons you've learned along the way. You will be inspired, enriched, and rewarded for having dug this particular garden along with Robert and his master gardener, his wife Sara. You will feel as though you are a part of the earth there. You can smell the roses in full bloom and, though you may never see it with human eyes, you will experience the joy of stepping past French doors and into the writer's tack room/studio. And, without being prodded on purpose, you will begin to reflect on how the Master Gardener has planted seed in your life and then stood back to watch you bloom. ~~Eva Marie Everson, Author and wife of gardener
