This is What Metal Should Be  May 16, 2010
I get that the band name is referencing Christ and how He was the archetype for mankind, but after hearing this album, I've gotta say that Becoming the Archetype is quickly becoming the archetype for heavy, brutal metal. The instrumentalists are amazing at what they do, managing both incredibly complex and technical musicianship while maintaining a relentless melodic feel to the whole thing. And the vocalist is the best screamer/growler I've ever heard in a metal band, bar none. He is able to deliver an aural assault to equal that of the musicians (of which he is one, playing bass for the band), and more importantly is able to manage something so few people can do: he is able to put real emotion into the screaming/growling. All these elements blend together perfectly as well; no one instrument overpowers another, but all manage to work in perfect harmony with one another.

I love bands whose sound you can hear evolve over the course of their albums, and this is certainly true of Becoming the Archetype. Terminate Damnation was an amazingly technical album, but it ultimately fell into the hole found with many bands of their type: sacrificing melody and flow for sheer technicality. This is great, really, but it ends up making it an album that is more appreciated than enjoyed. Physics of Fire went in just the opposite direction. The technicality was still there, but toned way down in order to make a more melodic album. I found myself comparing them to other similar artists -As I Lay Dying, Between the Buried and Me, etc. - when listening to Physics of Fire. It made the album enjoyable, but I ended up missing the technicality of the first album.
And now there's Dichotomy. Excuse the cliché, but this album really presents the best of both worlds: it's very melodic and flows very well, while also managing to present the amazing technicality that makes Becoming the Archetype stand out from the rest. It took me a few listens to fully appreciate the balance (or, one might say, "dichotomy") between the technicality and melody in some songs, and I was blown away once I finally heard it. I think the perfect example of this is the song "Self Existent:" normally there's not much melody in either 7/4 or 5/4 time, especially when the two are so often interchanged durnig the song, but Becoming the Archetype manages to pull it off.
So basically what I'm saying is: if you like the heavy side of metal, then you would be doing yourself a huge disservice not to get this album.
Artistically Excellent, but Not as Good as "Physics of Fire"  Feb 19, 2010
I don't really know how to describe it... but something is missing on this album. I hate to say it, but I think the loss of Alex Kenis has totally changed the band's sound. Probably my favorite thing about "BTA's" sound was the transition from brutal growling to the soaring heavy metal vocals. Does anyone remember "The Monolith"? What an amazing song! Why? Because it incorporated everything you want in a good metal tune:

Growling, crazy guitar solos, furious blastbeats, breakdowns and to ice the cake melodic singing!

Now, I'm not one to whine about needing melodic singing in every track. In fact, I love bands such as "Impending Doom" and "August Burns Red" that don't incorporate that element at all! The problem is, BTA achieved SUCH PERFECTION with "Physics..." that I didn't quite know what to make of this album.

All of that being said, this is still BTA and as such deserves to be taken seriously. The title track is a heavy metal gem that utilizes the considerable talents of Demon Hunter's Ryan Clark. "How Great Thou Art" is an amazingly rendered version of a classic hymn, and the lyrics throughout the entire album are seriously AMAZING. BTA, I still love you... but for some reason, I think I'll be listening to "Physics of Fire" twice as often as "Dichotomy."
EXCELLENCE  Oct 6, 2009
This is a CD that I keep coming back to. It has a very mature, theatrical sound. The vocals really hit hard with a deep guttural strength, as well as the lyrics having the balance between being uplifting and yet painful in their honesty. I love track 6's haunting harpsichord intro, and track 9's synth-pop sound turned booming growl. The bass is deep and the guitars artistic. This is a new, honed style from a band that just keeps getting better.
Previous releases had to grow on me... looks like more of the same from BTA.  Sep 2, 2009
I'm a huge fan and have seen them twice live. I love their previous work and if you're like me, it takes a few listens to "get it" when it comes to really great music.
I picked this album up and wasn't impressed on the first and second listen. Like their previous work, it's growing on me and I dont think it will be long before "getting it".

Biggest difference that I can hear so far in this album is the production. Especially the vocal effects. (Echo and what not). Also, I find the tracks shorter and less progressive... I'd like to see them get back to that kind of structure.

Still, great work guys! Saw you years ago in Fayetteville, Ark. Come back and I'll be there!!!
Fantastic  Jun 29, 2009
Fantastic album from start to finish. Each song is chock full of moving riffage and beautiful melody. It's really not like any other metal that's out (esp. christian metal). The lyrics are understandable (unlike many other christian bands) and blend with the music in a profound way. I play this album all the time and plan to purchase all of BTA's catalog soon.
