Reviews - What do our customers think?
Excellently written message of hope for depression sufferers  Feb 27, 2009
Defeating Depression by Leslie Vernick is subtitled Real Hope for Life-Changing Wholeness, and the book definitely lives up to it. The book addresses the myriad sources for depression and the ways to treat it, even including anti-depressant medication. I think that when Christians suffer from depression they bear a heavier burden than many others, because of the guilt and shame that goes along with it. Some Christians believe that faith in God should be enough and that depression is just a lack of faith, but Vernick destroys that myth through careful research and anecdotes. I haven't had long-term depression, but I do go through some minor bouts of it because of my rheumatoid arthritis, and the tools that Vernick recommends: anti-depressants, prayer, and counseling offer a great deal of help and hope. Vernick removes the shame associated with depression by pointing out that biblical figures like King David as well as well-known ministers like Charles Spurgeon have battled it. She included a Spurgeon quote: Any fool can sing in the day. When the cup is full, man draws inspiration from it; when wealth rolls in abundance around him any man can sing to the praise of a God who gives a plenteous harvest...It is not natural to sing in trouble...Songs in the night come only from God; they are not in the power of man. This book offers real hope and solutions for anyone suffering from depression.

Practical Help for Real Problems  Feb 16, 2009
Winning the Battle of the Bulge: It's Not Just about the Weight

Leslie's book is an easy read about a difficult problem that too many people want to sweep under the rug. She identifies the problems, shows the readers how to recognize their own depression issues, and then gives practical answers and real help. Whether you are experiencing severe depression or minor discouragement you can find solutions in this book. The information on dealing with past hurts and forgiveness is especially insightful.

A Must Have for Therapists, Church Librarians, Ministers, and Chaplains  Jan 15, 2009
Leslie Vernick writes with power, clarity, and compassion from her own experience with depression and as licensed clinical social worker. Her passion for helping hurting women and for God's Word permeates the book. It is divided into three parts: a woman's relationship with herself, a woman's relationship with others, and a woman's relationship with God. Leslie provides a reader-friendly explanation of what depression is and what the symptoms are. She presents dozens of examples from depressed clients that help readers understand depression and hope to defeat it. Readers can seek comfort from the appropriate Scriptures throughout the book. After the last chapter, Vernick provides Scripture Verses That Help You, Resources for Depression, Sample Letter to Family or Friends, and How to Find a Christian Counselor. This book should be in the hands of therapists, church librarians, ministers, and chaplains. If you know any depressed women, please buy this book for them as soon as possible.

Light at the End of the Tunnel!  Jan 2, 2009
Leslie Vernick understands women's hearts. She knows what it is to hurt and hope--only to see the hurt multiplied and the hope crushed. But she also knows the One who sees every hurt and fans the flicker of hope to a healthy flame.

Lovingly written and practically presented, Defeating Depression is a book filled with short, reader-friendly chapters that speak to women in whatever darkness they find themselves, offering light at the end of the tunnel and promise for a better future. Highly recommended as an individual or group study!
