Overview
Fr. Thomas Dubay, one of the most popular and respected retreat masters and spiritual directors in the USA, is the author of the perennial best-selling book on prayer and contemplation, Fire Within. In this book, he responds to the call of both Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI to priests to help believers and all spiritual seekers develop a deeper prayer life and union with God. As in his other popular writings, Dubay speaks in terms clear and readable, though profound and meditative. He gives an overview of the spiritual life and journey for anyone seeking to grow in the love of God and neighbor. An expert on the teachings and writings of the two great mystical doctors of prayer and the spiritual life, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, Dubay gives solid practical advice for a deepening moral and spiritual conversion, and a radical growth in holiness. Topics Covered in Depth: * The Radical Conversion * Relevance and Motivation * Conversion and Genuine Love * Degrees of Depth * Remarkable Resistance * Called to the Heights * Sure-fire Program

A book for anyone who wants to be a saint  Nov 8, 2008
There is no question that Fr. Dubay is the master in teaching Christians how to pray. His "Fire Within" is a classic that probably can't be matched. This book, "Deep Conversion, Deep Prayer" is a worthy compliment to that book.

In "Deep Conversion, Deep Prayer," Fr. Dubay tackles that perennial problem for the serious Christian: why can't I overcome those persistent sins that continue to plague me? Why do I stay so average in my Christian walk? He opens the book with a perceptive quote from St. Bernard: "There are more people converted from mortal sin to grace, than there are religious converted from good to better." This is obvious to anyone who has been living the Christian life for any amount of time. We hear about and experience the dramatic conversions from serious sinner to Christian, but it seems to be rare to see someone grow from a regular Christian to a saint. But the fact remains that every Christian is called to this path. That is what this book addresses, and it gives practical advice to help one on that journey, including a "surefire program" to take one from average Christian to holy saint.

My only complaint (and the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars) is the final chapter. It is titled "The Sacramental Dimension," and I was looking forward to Fr. Dubay's advice on how to integrate a sacramental life into his "surefire program." However, it ended up being an odd criticism against too frequent confession (Fr. Dubay thinks the typical person shouldn't confess more than once a month), including the questionable statement that if too many people confess too often, priests wouldn't be able to do anything else. Considering the fact that most parishes only have confession available for less than an hour a week, and the lines are still not long, and that many saints have encouraged weekly confession, it seems odd that Fr. Dubay would downplay the importance of going to confession as often as possible.

But that is a minor complaint; overall the book is a very practical and useful guide for growing in the Christian life. If you want to become more serious about "being perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect,", I highly recommend this book.

To be re-read   Jun 7, 2008
Our book club loved this book and the common response was that it needs to be re-read every couple of months - it was that good.

total consecration  Jun 16, 2007
Thomas Dubay calls us away from casual Christianity and toward holiness in this small volume. Getting rid of besetting or venial sins is the theme he deals with; overeating, gossiping, laziness and lust are a few mentioned. He points out that many, perhaps most Christians see nothing wrong with these and have no intention of ever really dealing with them. But the call of Christ is a call to absolute surrender and intimacy with our Lord. One does not have to be Roman Catholic (I am not) to appreciate the straightforward writing and simply put passion for God Father Dubay insists is to be the normal way for every true disciple of God through Jesus Christ.
