Item Description...
After Simon and his mother take in an old woman from the cold on Christmas Eve, they awaken to find their Christmas angel December with her wings fanned out over their cardboard house.

Publishers Description
Simon and his mom don't have much--the cardboard house they built for themselves, a tiny Christmas tree, and a picture of an angel from a calendar pinned to one wall. The angel's name is December. Simon's mom says she sings to them when they're asleep. On Christmas Eve, Simon and his mom take in an old woman who needs a place to keep warm, and the next morning, Simon wakes early to find that the old woman has vanished. Instead, he sees December, their Christmas angel, with her wings fanned out over their cardboard house. Could she be real?

More About Eve Bunting

Eve Bunting The author of more than 200 books for young readers, Eve Bunting was born in the small village of Maghera in Northern Ireland. In 1958, she emigrated to the United States, where she has lived ever since, raising three children and — more recently — welcoming four grandchildren. Bunting began writing after moving to California, where she enrolled in a community college creative writing course. Her first published story, The Two Giants, was a retelling of a folktale she knew from her childhood. “I thought everybody in the world knew that story, and when I found they didn't — well, I thought they should.”

Bunting's interest in just about everything, and her confidence in wanting to share her thoughts and experiences with children, has led to her incredible career as the creator of a wide variety of books. She has written picture books, novels, and even some nonfiction. She never shies away from addressing difficult issues, including racial prejudice, death, troubled families, and war; at the same time, her work is infused with hope and beauty.

Her numerous awards and honors include the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers, the PEN Los Angeles Center Literary Award for Special Achievement in Children's Literature, and the Edgar, given by the Mystery Writers of America.

When Bunting isn't writing, she enjoys reading and playing golf. She lives in Pasadena, California, with her husband.

Eve Bunting currently resides in Pasadena, in the state of California. Eve Bunting was born in 1928.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
December  Jan 24, 2008
Heart breaking story of homelessness during the Christmas season with a miracle to boot. Diaz' usual fabulous artwork works well with Bunting's deft story tellings of social issues, especially here.
Great Story  Apr 12, 2007
Very moving, very powerful discussion point with kids grades 1-4. Highly reccommend for story or book discussion groups.
A Haunting Book!  Nov 1, 2003
I had to read it twice to have the story really sink in. This book is very moving and quiet. A really great job from Eve Bunting and a book to be remembered.
Angel in the Alley  Sep 28, 2001
December is a remarkable book -- it manages to connect homelessness to the realm of miracles and the mystery of Christmas. As a reading teacher, I've had the pleasure of meeting Eve Bunting and sharing her stories with hundreds of children. The younger set don't always understand the implications of the old lady who visits on Christmas Eve, but they are deeply touched by the generosity of a mother and child who are willing to share a cookie, a precious coat and the box over their head. The story has something of the aura of O'Henry's Gift of the Magi. December is a pleasure to read and a treasure to share.
Beautiful Picture Book for Both Kids and Adults  Jan 9, 2000
Eve Bunting has teamed up again with David Diaz (illustrator) to create what will surely become a holiday classic. Is the feeble old lady who visits the mother and her son who live in a cardboard box really an angel? This story conveys, in an understated yet very accessible manner, the importance of finding spiritual meaning in the most humble of human experiences. This is a wonderful message of hope and the importance of recognizing, and extending ourselves to, those in need.
